- Dr Tom Henry, a specialist in the artist Luca Signorelli (c.1450-1523), presents footage of Signorelli's frescoes in the cathedral at Orvieto, Umbria, Italy. These are an apocolyptic vision of the last judgment and a direct precursor of Michelangelo's Sistine chapel.

Michelangelo gets so much credit for his Last Judgement, yet few people know Signorelli's masterpiece, especially
outside Italy. His frescoes in Orvieto's San Brizio Chapel deserve closer scrutiny by all lovers of great art, I think.
Yes I agree, same goes with Correggio's frescoes in Parma
The art establishment/intellectuals are mostly to blame since they are the authority and have the influence to put any artist of their choosing into the limelight. A good example is Frida Khalo whose works were once practically insignificant compared to Diego Rivera but in the last 10-20 years, Khalo has steadily risen into stardom, recognized by the establishment as an important artist even overshadowing Rivera himself. The same happened to our poor friend Vincent Van Gogh who was spat and laughed at by the art establishment only to be recognized a century later as a giant in art history.
It's just a matter of time when Signorelli gets his turn. Believe it or not even the dead "get ahead" by having the right connections. ^^

A lot of blame lies with Vasari, who is the equivalent of Herodotus for art history. For Vasari Michelangelo was the greatest artist who ever lived, to whom all previous artists pointed the way. More widely he is generally biased towards Florentine art, his life, such as it is, of Duccio is pathetic, he couldn't even be bothered to look for Duccio's great masterpiece, the Maestà in Siena Cathedral.
Simply, a hidden treasure!
outstanding art
