Yeah tons! But then this video would have been like 4 hours long
The callout of Tableau lacking very basic SDLC features (at least Tableau cloud has some semblance of version control) captures one of the core problems tableau has in reference to any wide-spread adoption in an organization. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had a stakeholder say one metric on one dashboard doesn’t match supposedly the same metric on another dashboard. Tableau expects that to all be done at the database level which I believe disempowers a lot of BI and Data Analyst people in orgs. Great video!
Yeah, of course, in practice..I have seen many different levels of looker proficiency. Meaning..sometimes that SDLC feature...becomes a downside vs. a positive.

For sure you don't want to do complex things in tableau prep but sometimes you just need a few quick steps and to bring in some small data from say an excel file for a very specific and small report that probably won't live that long or would be pretty easy to redo if you change tools later. The lower skill ceiling means a regular analyst can do this.
As for self serve I'd say forget it an average business user won't be doing data prep no matter the tool. They might be able to build a basic view/graph if you provide them with a clean and simple source though. Sometimes you can't have a dashboard for every specific need and they can do simple views in a few clicks for an ad hoc need.
Very cool insight on how Tableau doesn't really have a way to manage calculations/parameters or whatever other variables you create across different dashboards.
Yeah its an interesting thought really. Again at smaller companies this may be fine. But larger companies it can be a struggle.
It does, when you publish a data source and reuse it in multiple dashboards. The calculations & parameters then reside in the published data source, and not the dashboards themselves.

It's great to look at the engineering differences of the two, I think a larger point that wasn't made when choosing between the two is the comfortability of creating reports and dashboards of your user base. I've only used Looker so I am biased, but I truly believe the goal of Looker is democratizing data. You are building a way for users to repeatedly create something on the same constructed data without them needing to know SQL, LookML, or the underlying table construction. I agree, Tableau seems great for your small pool of users that are comfortable building something on the go, with basic SQL knowledge or basic knowledge of database connection - but what about the users who are interested in reporting with none of this knowledge?

Looker runs as a SQL statement on runtime which makes defining custom dimensions and metrics within looker very expensive. Especially if you create reporting views as views it is very time consuming and costly. Also doing joins within looker with greatly increase cost. However data sharing capability of Looker and limiting view functionality for a user I really liked. Since looker doesnt have its semantic layer I think proper data strategy is required if we are to implement looker
This comment is absolute rubbish. Querying your database is not expensive - that is what a DB is for. Joins don't make any difference either. And you go on to say that 'Looker does not have a semantic layer' - did you not watch the video?? Looker is entirely built around its semantic/modelling layer. That's the main selling point!!
if you end up thinking Tableau is cheaper than Looker, then Data Studio might be the first thing you have to try out and then choose Tableau if it falls short for some use case.

@@SeattleDataGuy I think these dashboard tools also lead to another video. And that is the semantic layer! After a tool like dbt comes the semantic layer that not only other dashboarding tools pull from but also data apps, notebooks, etc. Would love a video on the maturity of the semantic layer, it's uses, key players, the difference between where it's layered in the stack (upstream like dbt vs downstream like looker/power bi).

Are there other BI tools that have that similar “component”/repeatability approach? Agree that creating a metric in a tableau dash and then having to rebuild from scratch in another dashboard is not ideal.

Its in the works but working with corporations always takes time. They have lots of legal hoops to jump through.
I'm using R shiny in my company. I don't know if i should use learn other visualisation tools
If you have time, then sure. But if you don't need to learn them its all good. Who knows, in a few years a whole new set of tools might come around.
Aside from Looker and Tableau.. do you have any thoughts on other data visualization tools? When one might be preferred over another?
For example, Grafana , Plotly / Dash , GraphQL , matplotlib , etc?
Those can be great. Some people prefer lower code options like PowerBI and Tableau others like writing code. But also, GraphQL is not a data viz langauge.
In a different league but hard to beat Redash for the value

I feel like no discussion about costs is complete without touching on free tools like Datastudio. Do Tableau and Looker justify their price premiums?
I was working for the GCP looker team, and this is a great review. Tableau and Looker integration is planned, the power of Look ML language and visualizacion of tableau. . probably Look Ml will be the standard language for visualization on a few years.

Sort of reminds me of SAP's "Business Objects" where you can create an entire layer of logical views/tables/derived tables and create joins and then use that logic to create all your reports. We started running into a bit of trouble with the growing complexity of joins, however, but it was very nice to be able to manage that logical layer between the data source and the reports.
Now this comparison does not hold anymore, Looker is now Google Looker Studio the visualization tool and GCP Looker BI
Google Data Studio is a good option as far as being able to build a "durable" data set to be used from dashboard to dashboard
Its a great place to start. Often times once you have other use cases, Looker and tableau are a great fit.
@@SeattleDataGuy yeah, it doesn't have nearly as many visualization options, as far as I can tell, but good data management and it is completely free, so there's that.
The lack of a software approach sure is annoying in tableau. At the same time I doubt you'll find a lot of people looking for a software approach that also have a more graphics designer approach (don't ask me to play with colors and fonts and what not I'll just fall asleep). The simplicity is also great for leaving the tedious parts of building dashboards to less technical people or just juniors/interns.
If you use published sources you can limit repeating calculations but you'll probably have a few repeats as some reports will require different sources.
Looker is awesome but i think it will be taken over other cheaper alternatives eventually that have very similar features. It's too expensive for most organizations!!!
Yeah it'll be interesting to see. Their pricing is still wild to me. But they do often provide discounts that can bring it down to more reasonable values

Tableau sucks :-( we tried to launch a BI product based on it, but no matter what you do - you end up 90% of the desired UX because of bugs or limitations

@@SeattleDataGuy Looker was too expensive. We picked Tableau and made an MVP, which did not fly, so we had to freeze the project. :-( I am not blaming Tableau entirely for the failure - our biggest problem was that although our customers shared the same data scheme - each had very different and creative way to fill it. :-) But UX issues of Tableau (e.g. we spent over 3 months trying to make user's click open in the same browser tab or separate tab based on context and failed) contributed to that.
So now we are the "round 2" of evaluation
