Haunted Amusement! There was the back of the chair that would tilt backwards so that the body would fall down the trapdoor once Sweeney slit their throats. Well remembered :)
Of course this is just an opinion, but this must be by far my all-time favourite performance of Mrs. Lovett. I think Imelda did an awesome job, and you can tell she S-T-U-D-I-E-D the hell out of this character, past performers of the role and still managed to imprint it with new nuances that make it her own and unforgettable.
OMG in Heaven I loved her for so long had no idea she sang but I am waiting till some smart director will allow a Mrs. Lovett to suddenly hold up a sign that says shitty when the line fall in the song for once let us all sing it as it should be sung
Imelda Staunton is a great actress she is the perfect Lovett However she played the worst character ever Dolores Umbridge Despite that Staunton is amazing.
Imelda can sing this but she resorts to screaming. Shouting really. It's the character, she's acting. Angela did both. It was never screaming. She screamed Gypsy too. And Angela did both without shouting
Well I saw Angela Lansbury in the original Broadway production - you can also get the cast album on youtube... and she put a sharp cockney twang into it. Not at all like her smoother resonant singing in Hollywood musicals. This show and this role really require a kind of "Sprechgesang" approach because of its hurdy-gurdy music-hall style, modern discordant harmonies, and harsh subject matter. I with I had seen Imelda - even with the bad audio and dry singing style, she really gets the words across - and uses phrasing to get the jokes and put the character across. This is an impressive and tantalizing clip!
In my unpopular opinion: Imelda kind of sounds like she's overacting quite a bit. I prefer Helena Bonham Carter's subtler, more ladylike performance as Mrs. Lovett
She is far and away the best Lovett. 'overacting quite a bit???' I cannot disagree more. Her acting is what makes her performance stand out against those who rush and over sing the role. Her breathing, her physicality, her transitions, happen in alignment with the lyric, the melody, the rhythm...something almost all fail to achieve. Her acting is exceptional. LuPone is tedious because she is showing off vocally and rushes, loses the character totally. Landsbury is exceptional, of course, for the speedy approach. But for overall interpretation, Staunton takes the cake. I understand both the lyric and Sondheim's with when she sings it. I lose both when I see most others "aping" the role. This combo of Ball and Staunton is remarkable.
Dude, Bonham was not at all what Mrs. Lovett was intentended to be like. Sondheim wanted more of a malicious, psycho, vicious Lovett, while Bonham's one was desperate, weak and seen as an abuse victim, which is so wrong.
Movie and stage acting should be different. I just love Imelda's take on this role cause it has so much more energy. Notice how she pounds on the pie dough like it's some kind of percussive instrument and this is blended with her spicy diction making it sound just wonderful
This song was not meant to be sung in a subtle, ladylike manner. Mrs. Lovett is supposed to be the exact opposite of the quiet, brooding and obsessive Sweeney Todd.
@@scottc4199 I don't see where I made any mention of HBC's performance. In the context of that film, she was fine. Depp was extraordinary. Comparing film work to live stage work requires one to take a lot of variables under consideration. As a director and creator, I have approved loads of actors and things that are not on par with other possibilities. For me, Staunton is the best. She finds reality in the madness, she finds nuance without sacrificing pace or requiring support from a montage of framing choices.
Honestly you can watch this over and over and laugh every time because Imelda's delivery is out of this world
I saw this live in London and thought that whoever picked Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball to play the main characters were absolute geniuses :)
+PhantomFan1a Was there a collapsing chair? I know there was blood.
Haunted Amusement! There was the back of the chair that would tilt backwards so that the body would fall down the trapdoor once Sweeney slit their throats. Well remembered :)
***** So, like the chair in the original production or does it send them down backwards?
sends them backwards if i remember correctly
Haunted Amusement! sends them backwards if i remember correctly
I wish this version was professionally filmed like some shows are done. Her delivery is just perfect!!
SAME😊 FOR REAL
💯
Brilliant performance seeing it live was an absolute joy
That’s 2 Harry Potter women who’ve done this
Her “These are probably the worst pies in London” was hysterical, I love Imelda Staunton
They're both so good in this. I've been looking for a full transfer of this. :(
She's wonderful! I've always wondered why Julie Walters has never given this role a shot. She'd be superb!
@Kamil Julie Walters has a good voice but has just not played a role where it was required.
You’re so right! I need to see that!
I think Imelda has the best *_IS THAT JUST DISGUSTING?_* right before Patti LuPone lol
What's in the pie? Mrs. Norris!?
DIscussed her performance in play reading group today. Amazing.
Great, great great actress, a wonderful Mrs. Lovett!
Quoting her husband, Jim Carter, "She's the best in the business" and she IS.
I wish I'd gone to see this production when it was on
She was so good as Mrs Lovett made me laugh so much :D
IM SICK that i was too young to experience this 😭😭😭 so unfair

RIP Angela Lansbury.
She's wonderful, LOL!
She's a genius.
Imelda and Baranski are the best mrs lovett
That was amazing.
OMG in Heaven I loved her for so long had no idea she sang but I am waiting till some smart director will allow a Mrs. Lovett to suddenly hold up a sign that says shitty when the line fall in the song for once let us all sing it as it should be sung

The camera is too far away.
