- Birgit Nilsson 1918 - 2005. One of The Worlds two best opera singer ever. Jussi Bjorling is the other one. Both from Sweden - remarkable...
La Nilsson celebrates Maestro James Levines 25 years at Met 1996 with Brünhildes "Hojotoho!". At 78 she still got it!
And that, is why Birgit Nilsson is the greatest soprano of the 20th century. Launch comparisons all you want, show me a 78 year old who can do a better hojotoho than the average 40 year old and we'll talk.
When one sings correctly for a lifetime, 78 is no age..look at her physical stature when she sings drawing on all the inter costal muscles..straight up and down.. and let er' go... also she had perfect pitch, so she just plucked that note right out of the air...I loved her and knew her in NYC at the met...Earle
Earle Goodwin Yup. Victoria de los Angeles, amongst a handful of others, sang right up to the end.
At 78 she had a better top than the average contemporary 'Soprano.' Go figure
78 years old....and there are singers half her age who could not touch that!!!!
Definitely
My god!!! Birgit Nilsson! The best opera singer in the world! You made opera into something better, more dramatic, more perfect with your incredible technique and you are such an inspiration for young singers like myself! You are truly missed, but you will live forever because of your beautiful voice and personality! Thank you, Birgit....
The Phenomenal Birgit Nilsson strikes again! I love her because she was an AMAZING singer actress, and because she so loved Placido Domingo, well knowing how special he was and still is, such that the inaugural prize of her foundation went to him and which he turned back into fostering up and coming talent. Nilsson and Domingo have made the world a much better place. Try to appreciate it. Mil gracias por compartir. Lo agradadesco.
I heard this woman from the beginning of her career, her debuts in Vienna, Bayreuth and San Francisco (before the MET) and believe me: she is a phenomenon of Nature! A lightning bolt from above! There is no Isolde, no Elektra like The Nilsson! Glad I go to meet her.
Robert Rumper I don’t understand. You look young in your picture. Nilsson made those debuts in the 1940-50s. Were your parents even born then??
I agree with the comment from JUSTINMILL3R below: she steps away from the mic to sing. She was tremendous and a true star. I'm not sure about the references to James Levine, but no matter. I watch this clip for her, and It is just inspiring almost to the point of tears to watch.
No greater tribute could be given than by Madame Nilsson. I'd rather hear her than most "dramatic" sopranos nowadays.
She was singing the entire Elektra at age 62!!!
I saw this in person!! Just awesome and exciting!! All of us stood up and applauded!!
God! I absolutely LOVE her! I think Birgit Nilsson had an extraordinary, COLOSSAL voice, and her technique was virtual perfection. Even here , at almost 80 years old , you can still hear that THRILLING sound! Thank you for posting this. I would love to see the whole clip!
how is this even possible? RIP dear birgit, go easy on the heavenly choir
She was the greatest! And a VERY nice person... Thank you.
Will there ever be such a voice again....?
C MyClips. I was stunned to see you name what I think are the two greatest singers, Nilsson and Bjoerling just as I would have. Best tenor. Best Soprano.
It should be impossible that two of the best opera singers of all times should be from this obscure country close to the northpole.
totally..no way. What a singer...she never forgot how.
The "Valkyrie Battle Cry" is one of the most difficult passages ever written for a singer, and Nilsson brought it off brilliantly.
That farmer's daughter really showed them. There's no substitute for raw (or refined) talent.
This clip is so touching.
NO WAY!! That can't be a voice from a 78 year old! Gee...She was incredible.
Best voice ever.
BN was one of a kind and her sence of humour wow! A Super Star she was Birgit!
Incredibile! Fantastica! insuperabile!
I love you, my beloved Nilsson.
i can't believe she was 78 there! that is outrageous!!!
At 78 she still a great singer and walks away from the Mike still knowing the power of her voice
I wish I was old enogh to be part of one of your performances.
¡mi Dios, qué monstruo tan grande!
She was 78 then. Amazing.
Holy moly
Meravigliosa, Stupenda, Immensa......
I love her.
A legend indeed, and behind the on-stage fame a remarkably down-to-earth lady with a great sense of humour. She grew up on a farm, less than eighty miles from my hometown, and the idea of being a professional singer, let alone a classical singer, was definitely not familiar to her from home.
She held her voice.. much like Ms Leontyne.. speaks of correct technique..
PROPERTY OF THE GREAT ONE!!!
oh yes 78 years old and one onf the wagher greats
78 años??????????????? que sonido!!!!!!!!
Levine always has to put his mug everywhere.
C'etait encore en place
Que grande es la Nilsson!....
She looks absolutely fabulous :)
for those that have the SiriusXM Met Opera Radio channel, they are broadcasting Nilsson's Brunnhilde in the 1975 "Live from the Met" Die Walkure recording Tuesday Oct 4th, Thursday Oct 6th and Satuday Oct 8th with Donald McIntyre as Wotan and Jon Vickers as Siegmund
I hope it's a good recording. in some of the 1970's Met Wagner's I have heard, I think the sound engineer was stoned.
Huge voice usually
@TsarBovov She is performing it solely for "that creep", in celebration of his 25th year with the Met, and I (on the contrary) think that it makes it even more wonderful.
ThaT WAS DAMN FINE no matter what age.
❤❤❤👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
That's the point.......there's a thing called irony, and it plays a wonderful role in humor.
RAYO LASER!!!! POR SIEMPRE. ESPERO QUE APAREZCA EN EL FUTURO UNA SOPRANO SI NO IGUAL, SIMILAR...
@TsarBovov
The "creep applauding" is James Levine - the whole event was in honour of his 25 years conducting at the Met
i miss her :) rip vackra fru nilsson
@LeRinkRat listened to the Tuesday performance and it was well recorded BUT the Walkurenritt was rather weak. sounded like conductor Sixten Ehrling was concerned about "playing over" the 8 Valkyries.
Birgit Nilsson as Brunnhilde, Jon Vickers as Siegmund, Janis Martin as Sieglinde and Donald McIntyre as Wotan we outstanding in their individual arias. Nilsson has to be the greatest Brunnhilda EVER.
Nilsson y Varnay son las mejores Wagnerianas que han existido
la mas grande sin discusion
nice voice ..much singer dead in the last year :(
Best Elektra of all time. In Wagner i admire Flagstad the most.
Birgit was outstanding but Jussi Björling and Nicolai Gedda were very good !Viva Svezia !
Agree on Flagstad - Callas and Schwartzkopf were masters in other fields.
78 years old?
@TsarBovov you're joking, right? You know the man applauding at the end is James Levine, one of the worlds greatest conductors?
I live in Sweden, no offence ment, but that is how some look at us.
VARNAY!!!!
@tjallew lol i know full well where the arctic circle in sweden is, i AM from sweden myself but to say it is close to the northpole is a bit of an exaggeration i thought :)
@ThePavafan When you start listening to opera give me a call
...or was your comment intended as irony? :)
@tedsler
I spend my yonger year's north off arctik cirkle in sweden check upp where in Canada, Russia ore
Alaska you have to bee ta achive it
Magnethik North Pole is realy not the same
Schwarzkopf, Callas, Flagstad are good contender.
@TsarBovov i feel there's an a-hole among us.
ok if you think the best Opera singer is Pavarotti you have alot to learn about opera my friend. Listen to Carouso he will take you man down any time
@s922918 Nope, but it Can be the voice of a 77 year old :D
@ThePavafan ....HA
Callas said that Wagner was "too easy", and if you think she was bragging, listen to her as Kundry. She simply was not interested in athleticism for its own sake.
@tedsler
donth worry bee happy I fully respekt your felling fore it
but those time I more ore less frissen to death (realy not that bad way to die you start felling warm
and nice even if it's -40 the problem saved to litel more time in thise body bye warm temperatur inside
let say 20+ that's the realy hell) I hade specily that felling after visit Gotenburg in April
24+ return to north snowstorm-30 the I moved to Gothenburg with out regrett
sorry dyslektiv Swed-Anglo-Amerikan lingvestik
that creep is the bloody maestro :P
@DerRealLoewe Han on, Sweden is not that close to the Northpole, that is just rubbish.
Not bad, but that creep applauding in the end ruins the experience.
