I had a psychic tell me I was.
I have vivid memories of being in the ocean, deep. I’ve never been in the ocean. I remember the sickly loud metallic sounds of man echoing for miles.
I remember that I was eaten by a giant squid.
Last thing I saw was it’s eye.
I remember that there were only five of us at a time (imagine there being five people on land).
We slept on the very bottom of the ocean.
We couldn’t have laws because it got in the way of how brutal life had to be down there.
My L”hair” was turquoise but only when it lit up, and it was a sensory organ, not hair.
It allowed me to strike my enemy by surprising them.
      We mated with our siblings.
I was long, grey, lavender, but sort of peach.
My gills were where my lower ribs are.
We sang too, and sometimes we came to land-
We appeared like a person but did not seem human.
I don’t believe we ever went to land for any reason other than curiosity but we knew places that weren’t populated.
Most of it was hunting, and sleeping, and sometimes I’d go to the surface near kelp forests- again I remember that we knew which places weren’t explored by people somehow.
I remember how the water tasted.
I had big eyes, sharp teeth. Long webbed hands like bat wings, but very strong.
      Apparently my aura is blue

“Swimming, that’s what I did for the rest of my years.
    Swimming across the seas.
Was I always the last one?
    I don’t remember anything.
I once met a beautiful lady.
The same lady promised me that she would help me bring back my people.
I trusted her, but soon fell into a deep slumber.
    She tricked me.
    I woke up.
    Panicking, I swam and swam.
Muddy waters, gloomy sunlight, dying seaweed.
    I often wonder what happened.
    Who was that lady?
    Where am I?
    Who am I?
My pain was loneliness, my pain was not knowing the truth that wouldn’t let itself be revealed to me.
    I swam again and again.
Swimming aimlessly in this ocean which I can never call home anymore, I sang for the very last time. With my last breath, I came up to the surface. I sang to make myself forget, I sang with every ounce of anger, my questioning, unbearable loneliness, sadness and well, a little bit of joy.
The joy of finally being relieved of this boulder I carry on my shoulders. It was almost ethereal. I enchanted myself with my own melody. In the end, I knew no one and no one knew me. Closing my eyes, I accepted my fate and sank slowly, slowly to the bottom of the ocean. It was only then, did I really feel liberated and free.”

A deep ache made itself known in her bosom as the current swept stray minnows and strands of seaweed past her.
She didn't remember the last time the sea felt this silent. At least, she didn't want to.
The waters had once been brimming with the clicking and singing of the sirens that had once been her people. They had once danced among the waves, their scales pale only to reflect the light of the sun and the sky. The reefs at the bottom of the ocean had once been home to thousands of mer, all living their lives as it was meant to be.
But that life was no more.
They had purged the beautiful folk from under the waves with their spears and their poison and their hatred. Sirens posed a threat to them, just like any animal, yet they prioritized their extinction over every other creature.
And now she swam alone, so lonely not even small fish would swim under her tail anymore or sweep their fins across her face to shoo her golden tears.
She stilled, her hand resting on the lifeless reef below her. The reef continued down to the sand, a distance at least twice the length of her tail, and buried itself in the white and black swirls of broken shells on the ocean floor. The sand that outstretched before her was dark, a valley of black sand. Black sand and the bones of her sisters.
For miles and miles she could see the skeletons of the slain siren, skeletons that were once the bodies she had had to drag out to the resting place with a heavy heart and wounds from battle. But her wounds then were nothing compared the the splitting pain in her hearts.
She can't remember how many bodies she had laid to rest in the sand, nor the precious golden tears she had shed for each one of them.
Her tail kicked up the sand beneath her as she swam over the reef and sand and finally into the ribcage of one of the titan mer and settled onto the sand. The inside of the bones were decorated with sea anemone, colorful like the light that had once reflected off the titan mer's scales.
Her hand caressed one long rib and memories from the eyes of the titan danced across her vision. The memories were once vivid, but as the skeleton aged so did the bones' memory. She tried to limit how frequently she visited the bones of her sisters, but the memories in their skeletons was all that was left of the life she once had. It was the only way she could remember. The memories she saw now were of when the titan was small, like her, and swam under the huge belly's of the land-walkers ships. Many other mer swam with her, playful and hungry. She recognized some of their faces and again pain swelled in her chest.
She pulled her hand from the bones and used it to wipe away the involuntary gold droplets that fell from her eyes and landed in the sand. The pain was normal, each time it dulled and dulled. But the tears she shed never did. The sea picked up around her, eddying at the edge of her hole-ridden fins as encouragement to leave the resting place, as if it feared she would take too many memories from the ocean itself.
Once more she swam though the titan's ribs, only this time away, into the dark of the bottomless sea.
She was all that was left, and when she died as all things did, the siren would be heard of no more.
Their lives would become legends, and they would be beautifully twisted into the villains of a folklore.

Hey lulu I grew up by the sea and sailed them most my life this song reminds me of The complete serenity of all of it. Sailing a ship is a lot different than going out with a motor you get to hear and feel and see all the natural sounds that would not be there with the motor running in the back🍻🇨🇦
