Cosmo performing 'The Fly' on a fishing boat in the English Channel.
Inspired by a William Blake poem titled 'The Fly' - www.portablepoe...
EP version mixed by alalal (aka Al O'Connell) and mastered by The Exchange, London in 2014.
Lyrics:
Little Fly,
Thy summer's play
My thoughtless hand
Has brushed away.
Am I not
A fly like thee?
Or art not thou
A man like me?
For I dance
And drink, and sing,
Till some blind hand
Shall brush my wing.
If thought is life
And strength and breath
And the want
Of thought is death;
Then am I
A happy fly,
If I live,
Or if I die....

seeing the fishermen dance together was the best thing ive witnessed all week
Ditto
I will always come back to this video, it brings me such inner peace, the smiling dancing fishermen are soul warming, and Cosmo's music is utterly stunning as always. Simply perfection
Had no idea this was originally a poem by William Blake
One of the reasons why I love Cosmo is because he performs live in the weirdest of places
I love it so much when creators do artsy shit like this. Delightful watch
Just learned about this guy on Sonza. The Moss was the first song. Amazing how each video is a musical art installation AND a video. Wow.
This channel gonna blow up...eventually
Jaan Sena ya hopefully
I hope Cosmo Sheldrake becomes popular so that future pop artists are influenced by Cosmo's beautiful music, and not the shit that's currently popular and mainstream. Would love if all pop were like this.
Still waiting
That it did
You a time traveler?
The fishermen are having a whale of a time
lol
We're whalers on the moon
We carry a harpoon
But there ain't no whales so we tell tall tales and sing our whaling tune
Thank you
nice
I carried this poem in my pocket when I was a child. So amazing, more please. XXOO
Okay, this guy is definitely one of the most exciting music discoverings of the year for me.
Other Artists singing about love and their problems and then theres Cosmo singing about a fly, on a boat. Hell yeah!
The boat was a beautiful choice, it's almost as if the fishes you caught were like the fly of the poem that gets swatted by the girl, both of them can't do nothing about it, and from another point of view, even men are subject to the same law, maybe because of something that was happening to you and you felt unable to act.
I think that's how you might have got the inspiration to do this vid, and that's truly beautiful :D
I stg Cosmo has the coolest aesthetic
Coming back to this video every now and then. Genius! The fishermen dancing 😂
intensive and real, great sound, like so much
I love this true are and beauty
No big music band would have done this, they would have had a big boat with women and showing of money.
I'm here in 2019! This song is beautiful, I never noticed the comments or the description before I checked it. It was very surprising that it was made a while ago.
Damn dude. you shared this with me on Soundcloud. And I came here directly looking to see if you had anything else and ran across your video. Fuck I love this sound.
Just learned William Blake's Poems last semester and feel very familiar with it when you perform this song!Really like your voice and your unique style;)
Had this recording on my ipod for years and years, love it

Am i the only one wonder just how he managed to convince those fishermen to let him on board? With all that heavy and expensive electronic equipment?
As a fae, Cosmo has the inherent ability to just convince people to do anything

When I saw the Pelicans We album cover for the other version of this video I thought it had to with the Pelicans migrating and not an actual fly

Are fish called fish because you fish for them, are is it called fishing because of fish?
Squiddies!!!
oh i made it 1k cool ^^
Tweeted @musosguide
This sounds like it could be in Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit.
You think a squid is a sentient being? When was the last time a squid wrote a book, or contemplated the origins of the universe? There is alive, and then there is sentient, and I think you have the two mixed up
Sentient doesn't mean intelligent
When was the last time an infant wrote a book or contemplated the origins of the universe?
I totally agree with TheLinden Tree. Please, please, let the animals alone! Don't use them for advertisment, for entertainment, for food, for clothes, etc. They are sentient beings. How can you be so unsensitive?
I don't think that you quite understand the word 'sentient'. TheLindenTree was saying that since squids are not sentient they are inferior to sentient beings; such as humans.
MonolithMedia I think neither of you know what sentient means, unfortunately. The LindenTree was way off. Squids are obviously sentient. Sentient simply means, "Able to perceive or feel things". Such as being reactive, responsive, aware, conscious. A squid is most definitely all of these things. Squids have nervous systems. Squids respond intuitively and intelligently to their environment. Squids are sentient.
whatisiswhatable I don't want to start an argument, but I don't entirely agree with you. Sentience in animals is not as clear cut as you make it out to be, there is still a fair bit of a grey area out there regarding the elements necessary for sentiency (coincidentally enough invertebrates such as squid and octopus are a particular point of dispute). Squid are most definitely reactive and responsive (I hate to point it out, but those two words are synonyms) due to their instinct based brain. However, calling them aware and conscious is quite a claim, considering you offer no sources confirming it (all depending, of course, on your definition of those two words). The fact that squid have a nervous system is quite unrelated to sentience, because for sentience to be apparent they would also require a brain capable of producing emotion, something which so far it appear only humans have. You also make the completely unsubstantiated claim that the squid "respond intuitively and intelligently to their environment". Already, we have a difficult enough time quantifying intelligence in humans, that explaining it in terms of a squid is nearly impossible (I'm sure they have some form of intelligence, but it would be very different from what you and I understand). You're claim that they are intuitive is complete gibberish. The Merirriam-Webster Dictionary defines intuition as "having the ability to know or understand things without any proof or evidence" (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/intuitive). Where has there been any evidence that squid do this? Regardless, I just wanted to express my disagreement with your statements and I apologize if this seems like far too lengthy for youtube comment. Also the majority of my information on sentience is from Wikipedia (perhaps not the most thorough of sources but at least somewhat accurate for quick information): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentience .
MonolithMedia Lol, it's cool. I enjoy conversations like this so no need to apologize. I agree with you to an extent that sentience is not as clear cut as I made it out to be and a lot of it actually depends on the terms we agree on using. For us it seems like you're defining sentience as a brain capable of producing emotion and so BOOM, argument over. Intuition? Knowing without proof or evidence? They probably do this, just on their own survival-based terms.. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cephalopod_intelligence).. it's early and I don't feel like reading but I'll share that WIKI page.. looks like they're rather skillful. But yeah, just a difficult animal to study. Anyways, it all depends on how sentience is defined. I say they're sentient because they integrate perceptual information in a way that intelligently suits their circumstances (but maybe that's a leap).
You're absolutely right, it all depends on our definitions of the terms. The reason, for example, that I defined sentience as requiring an emotional brain was because in the philosophy of animal rights they define sentience as the ability to suffer, I assume that this would require emotion and not just physical processes (I do not dispute animal rights in any way. I do think, however, that the sentience based argument is a bit of a stretch, if only for a lack of research.). So defined in that way I haven't seen much evidence to support the sentience (I've repeated this word way to many times lol) of squid. That being said, if we interpret sentience by your definition the squid may very well be sentient.
Also, thanks for the link it should be an interesting read.
