Hey guys, sorry to disappoint you with the accuracy of this video. Danny and I are not experts on German food and did not realize that the food was being mischaracterized or improperly prepared. We'll make sure we have a better understanding of the food next time we do this. -Dusty
Lot's of strong opinions and regional variation (eg. in my hometown the bee sting cake is usually w/o cream, but there are areas where a filling is added) over here in good ol' Germany. I think they're doing a good job after all. They even import Marzipan from Lübeck. Of course they're gonna put an American twist on it. The things I noticed that were still a bit off-putting for me were: 1) Currywurst is usually served with a curry sauce and sprinkled with tumeric; mostly with a side of fries. Also, different kinds of sausage are not usually served together, but I guess that is catering to the American customer wanting to get a taste of different German sausages all in one serving. 2) The table manners: awkward utensil handling, taking huge mouthfuls... and eating cake with knife and dinner fork (!) instead of using a dessert fork - for shame! ;)
When it tastes good, who cares? But calling some things traditional German food, that's something else. In that case you have to respect the original recipe. Like an American apple pie, but made, not with apples, but with bananas. Can be yummy, but it is not traditional American apple pie. Germans are proud of their food, no extremists like the French, but somewhat normal pride. They value table manners, and will leave it to that. As a Dutch man, traditionally, I will tell you that I see someone pushing down a knife on delicate pastry. Completely ruining the layers that were so carefully built up. Not cutting and placing it on his fork, but ramming the fork into it! Culture shock, as it is called.
Really? What is there to apologize? These foods look pretty German to me and I am a German. There were some inaccuracies, but mostly those were just variations like you find in every kitchen. My corrections would be: 1. German Pancakes: Those look like "Reibekuchen" which are sometimes translated as potato pancakes. Instead of being made with a dough, it is made with grinded potatos, eggs, onions salt and pepper. Maybe an incorrect tranlation, but the thing looks real to me. 2. The Schnitzel looks delicious, just a small tip: squeeze the lemon over the meat, it cuts through the fat and helps with digestion. 3. The sausages: Okay, they were all named wrong. I couldn't see the smaller sausages, but there was definitely no Weißwurst, which is good, because you don't fry them. Currywurst is a sausage (Bratwurst) (mostly) cut into pieces and drowned in warm curry ketchup and sprinkled with curry powder. Other than the name game: Those are some of the sausages, you willl find in every supermarket here. No problem. 3. The roulade: seems accurate to me, I like the modern approach with the side of mushrooms and zucchini(?). 4. Desert: Almond horseshoe: looks perfect and if it is made with marzipan from Lübeck, it's better than some you get here. The Schwarzwälder Kirsschtorte: Yes, there is no raspberry in it. It's a Blackforest Cherry cake, It looks authentic to me, so the only question is: how did it taste? The beesting also looks perfect to me. Granted, you don't usually have apricot on the cover of shaved, caramellized almonds, but I wouldn't say, I never had apricot jam on it. It's a variation and a good one. So there is no reason to apologize for any of those things!
Those are not german pancakes, this is not a currywurst... weißwurst should NOT be fried, unless you wanna hear a thousand Münchners scream in terrorr, its pronounced Roo-la-dan, black forrest cake should not contain raspberries, and someone teach him how to cut things on a plate.
and YOU are not a cultivated person! YOU must be GERMAN!.. no-one on the whole planet, who has at least a little bit of politeness, would start with "this is not.."....get the message KRAUT: if you do not have anything good to say, don't say ANYTHING! you might know how a blackforest cake is made BUT YOU HAVE NO COMMUNICATION SKILLS AT ALL.. very primitive!
But he is right. This is not a Currywurst, this is not a Weißwurst, a Roulade has not vegtable in it, just pickle and onion, this is not pancake it is Kartoffelpuffer made from potatoes and it is not a Black Forest Cake. I bet this is good food, but this is not original german food.
+ Krakra Kranich: no! I say that you should say it i n a nice way! for example: if you say "the Bratwurst looks delicious but the Currywurst is not what we call a Currywurst in Germany".. this will not hurt the person who invested a lot of effort in making the food and the video... if you just say "this is not a Currywurst" and nothing else.. you disrepect the effort and the person.. I think that life with other humans is nicer if we are all polite with each other...everybody has feelings which we should not hurt.. even those of people who call others snowflakes..
you could say it a little bit more polite but vsmash2 is right. i mean i feel a little bit angry too if someone says something is from germany or australia or kenia or whatever and it isnt or it is explained wrong cause i dont want others to feel afraid or get the wrong taste whats f.e. german!
A Reibekuchen is certainly not a "pancake". Proper blackforest cake is made with cherries, not rasberies. A Bienenstick (or Beesting) is certainly NOT a cheese cake, which is called Käsekuchen in Germany. And this is neither a proper Currywurst, nor should you dip a Currywurst in sweet moustache! That's barbaric!
As a german none of this food looks authentic to me. Some dishes are just plain wrong like the currywurst and the black forest cake others have the details wrong (like i have never in my life seen a brezel covered THAT thick with poppy seeds).
living in Bavaria, Mohnbrezen are totally normal and very tasty, too. The currywurst was iritiating, about the Weißwurst, it felt like a sting in the heart.
I like the video. Thanks for posting it. As many have already pointed out some inaccurate dishes, I like to say that the "Roulade" looks very authentic - und yummy.
If you want a german cake with raspberry filling, get on the Linzer Torte hype train. There's no need to frigg with Schwarzwälderkirschtorte like that :(
Honestly, I'd suggest the owner of this shop to go on a culinary trip through Germany to understand what he's even talking about. 90% of those products, their names and/or descriptions are just simply wrong.

They are NOT german pancakes. They are POTATOE pancakes, VERY different from a german pancake which is more like a french crepe. Currywurst is NOT dipped in mustard. Currywurst is a Bratwurst topped with a curry ketchup with curry powder :-) All in all the sausages look a bit thicker than in Germ any. The Rouladen (I didn't really get how he called it, it sounded like "rouden/roudin"?) are pretty accurate. The Black Forest cake never has raspberry filling it is ALWAYS cherry! The "horseshoe" is weird, we call it a Mandelhörnchen, which is basically an almond-cornet, the Bienenstich (bee sting) looks very authentic. all in all I would say it is probably the closest to German that you can find outside Germany, even when it is slightly different :-)
Those are Reibekuchen/ german hashbrowns...not pancakes..depending on where in Germany you live, a Pfannkuchen in Berlin is a type of deep fried pastry, filled with jam & covered in glazing or sugar topping, or, in Hamburg, a Pfannkuchen comes close to a US pankake..
German food made in America doesn't taste like German food made in Germany since the food quality and safety in the US is at the bottom of the pile. Google it.
I am still looking for the typical German desserts. I see only cake. But we eat them in the afternoon at coffee time. Where are the vanilla or chocolate puddings, red fruit jelly, vanilla and chocolate sauce, ice cream, baked apple, etc.? The worst for me is the apricot sting, because without honey it can not be a bee sting.
I have never seen a fried Weisswurst or a Currywurst without a sauce , sorry but this is nothing like our German food at all. And don't even get me going on the so called Black Forest cake , that's an insult for real!

German pancakes für kartoffelpuffer? Since when are pancakes made from potatoes? Also in germany pancake are made of dough. A Kartoffelpuffer is not a pancake.

Definitly high quality but not authentic german!
He butchers the name of the dishes ... Rulidin? Its pronounced Ruladen ...
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! This is not authentic. Terrible table manner. Cringe!
What a waste of delicious food on a silly looking guy, who hasn`t got a clue.
On one issue he could not disappoint, he has as most Americans disgusting table manners.
I`m sure the owner makes an afford to do his best, but he should not throw pearls away to the swines ;-)
Learn to speak german nothing expressed well its not Rolladin it is Roulade
Given that your English is terrible you might want to get off your high horse there.
Jens W. Du bist auch ein dummes Pferd
Jens W. I think my english ist much more better than your german i criticise about the mistakes in this video don't foolish me at all
_" I think my english ist much more better than your german i criticise about the mistakes in this video don't foolish me at all"_
Richtig wäre einfach nur "much better"
Ihre Zeichensetzung fehlt völlig. Meine ist seit der irren Rechtschreibreform sicherlich auch nicht mehr perfekt, aber zumindest bemühe ich mich.
_" i criticise about the mistakes"_
-> Das "about" gehört da nicht hin. Einfach nur "I criticise the mistakes".
_"don't foolish me at all"_
-> Das ergibt so überhaupt keinen Sinn. Vermutlich meinten Sie, "you don't fool me at all," in dem Sinne, dass Sie mir irgendeine Täuschungsabsicht unterstellen wollten.
Alles klar ich habe Nur Fachabitur und keinen Unversitätsabschluss
