You are doing it roughly, you have to put the jelly and use a brush with your hair realy wet, DON'T USE COTON 😉 to dry your hair try microfiber, don't use a drier, let it dry by itself.
Cotton is good, nothing wrong with it. Applying product on wet hair when you have finer hair acually weights it down and about the drying part, its acually sometimes better to diffuse since hair is so fragile when wet and its not good at all leaving it wet in colder climates, it can also cause scalp problem etc.

I do more air drying in summertime, but any other time I tend to use a diffuser, as you said it gets quite cold otherwise xx
