      No this is
Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
      Who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table.
      David Hume could out-consume
      Wilhelm Freidrich Hegel.
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.
There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist,
      Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed.
John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away,
Half a crate of whiskey every day.
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
And Hobbes was fond of his dram.
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart,
      "I drink, therefore I am."
Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed,
A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed.

Nietzsche's point was that before his time religion played a major role in how Humanity viewed the universe and our place in it. It gave us comfort and structure. Around Nietzsche's time it was obvious that so many stories in ancient texts are silly and don't align with reality, that you can't take them seriously anymore. Therefore we will need some ethical system that's not "because the God says so", otherwise we will drown in nihilism.

    Lyrics:
    Red:
I’ve read the words of countless ancient grumpy dudes who thought too much
Their books as long and laborious as final week’s untimely clutch
They all complain of human nature, sovereignty and social class
And speak with a precision gained by talking strictly out their ass!
    (Spoken)
    Blue:
What the hell are you doing?
    Red:
Obviously, I am singing about philosophers.
    Blue:
    No, but why?
    (Sung)
    Red:
Now, Kantian philosophy is duty-based and rather dry
While Hegel covers history without the need to dignify
Rousseau has rather interesting views about the natural state
    (Spoken)
    Blue:
Aren’t you supposed to be working on Journey To The West End Part 3?
    Red:
Technically, I am supposed to be doing my homework.
    (Sung)
    Red:
While Hobbes and Locke about the social contract can commiserate!
    Company:
While Hobbes and Locke about the social contract can commiserate!
While Hobbes and Locke about the social contract can commiserate!
While Hobbes and Locke about the social contract can commiser-iserate!
    Red:
Now, Adam Smith discusses nation wealth and new economy
Dividing labour lengthwise with his moralised autonomy
These guys have never thought to use some shorter words or simpler touch
I’ve read the words of countless ancient grumpy dudes who thought too much!
    Company:
These guys have never thought to use some shorter words or simpler touch!
I’ve read the words of countless ancient grumpy dudes who thought too much!
    Red:
    Now, Socrates elucidated practical philosophy
While Plato talked of ideal forms abstracted from frivolity
Then Aristotle’s problematic views on femininity
Eclipsed his more intriguing thoughts on ethical activity
Protagoras thought men was measure, nothing held in absolutes
While Durkheim showed us money makes us passionately destitute
Now, Karl Marx believed that under wealthy rule, the poor would be
    (Spoken)
    Blue:
Shouldn’t you have chosen a song you can, y’know, actually sing?
    Red:
    Shut up!
    (Sung)
    Red:
Oppressed and distanced from their work, a victim of the bourgeoisie!
    Company:
Oppressed and distanced from their work, a victim of the bourgeoisie!
Oppressed and distanced from their work, a victim of the bourgeoisie!
Oppressed and distanced from their work, a victim of the bourgeoi-bourgeiosie!
    Red:
Now, Weber thought that capital had roots among the Protestants
Whose attitude caused social rupture into opulence
Now, frankly, since I write a lot, I know that I’m not one to judge
I’ve read the words of countless ancient grumpy dudes who thought too much!
    Company:
Now, frankly, that I write a lot, I know that I’m not one to judge
I’ve read the words of countless ancient grumpy dudes who thought too much!
    Red:
Now, Nietzsche said that God is dead, repeated it ad nauseum
Aquinas held another view, more typical of Christendom
Descartes pursued a truth a bit more strictly mathematical
And fathered modern math while on a Netherlands sabbatical
Confucius said a lot of stuff, but most of it was pretty rote
Obey your elders, read the classics, if it’s cold out, wear a coat
Then Laozi founded Taoism, detached himself from worldly things
    (Spoken)
Red: No, no, no, this song, it’s not supposed to be sung perfectly.
    Blue:
    Uh huh.
    Red:
You’re supposed to be a little kinda all over the place,
    Blue: Sure.
    Red:
Like, that’s part of its charm.
    (Sung)
    Red:
Proposed to follow nature’s flow, relaxed, and wrote the Tao-te-ching!
    Company:
Proposed to follow nature’s flow, relaxed, and wrote the Tao Te Ching!
Proposed to follow nature’s flow, relaxed, and wrote the Tao Te Ching!
Proposed to follow nature’s flow, relaxed, and wrote the Tao Te-Tao Te Ching!
    Red:
Well, history is catalogued by scholars and philosophers
That college students analyse as tired lexicographers
We have to re-read history, or else repeat it, and as such,
I’ve read the words of countless ancient grumpy dudes who talk too much!
    Company:
We have to re-read history, or else repeat it, and as such,
I’ve read the words of countless ancient grumpy dudes who thought too much!
    (Spoken)
    Red:
Yeah, see, because this is a satirical patter song, the melody is practically impossible to get right. And it’s not particularly melodious, the Major-General is mostly talking, while the chorus and orchestration provide the real meat of the melody-
    Blue:
I think you’re just mad since you finally found something you can’t talk fast enough to handle.
    Red:
    No- Shut up!
    Blue:
Say it all you want, it doesn’t make it not true!

It sort of depends on which one. "Love, Unrequited, Robs me of my Rest" (i.e. "The Nightmare song") CAN be a nightmare to sing. "My Name is John Wellington Wells" is pretty hard as well. "My Eyes Are Fully Open" is a bit easier (though, of course, there, you have to work out how to get THREE people syncopating at the same time."
For a lot of the others, I have some trouble figuring out which the patter song is. In The Gondoliers is it the Duke's song, Rising Early in the Morning, or the Grand Inquisitors song? "I've got a little list is slow enough it isn't all that hard so long as long as you think ahead as to what you are going to rhyme.)

Immanuel Kant: Happiness is both irrelevant and unnecessarily complicated.
Georg Hegel: It’s way simpler if you never, ever examine specifics.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau: Humans aren’t naturally social, and property is the root of all evil.
      Thomas Hobbes: Ooh
      John Locke: Aah
Adam Smith: “Division of Labor” appears 38 times!/I wrote this too!
Socrates: I practically invented the leading question!
Plato: Reality is an illusion, but friendship is very real.
Aristotle: These things don’t have an original thought in their cold, drab brains. (Athena: Let it go, I’m sure no one will listen to him.)
      Protagoras: Everything’s relative!
Emile Durkheim: This stuff is bad for you!
Karl Marx: This is entirely your fault!
Max Weber: Remember, kids, hard work leads to capitalism.
Friedrich Nietzsche: God is dead and we killed him./(God: quit telling everyone I’m dead!)/Sometimes I can still hear his voice.
Rene Descartes: No, but why does everybody call me a philosopher? I did so much math.
Confucius: Apparently, “stating the obvious” is now grounds for deification.
Laozi: Apparently “being the chillest dude” is now grounds for deification.

I think that picture of Rousseau is my favorite portrait of anyone ever. He just looks so sweet and fatherly in it. Something about the kind smile.
Also, while we have Descartes to thank for Cartesian plots, he was a logician, and logic is considered philosophy. He and Francis Bacon also rooted the fundamental logic behind the scientific method in epistemology and rationalism, therefore, he’s a philosopher.
Plus, back in his time, he would have been called a “natural philosopher.”
