I drove a '94 Miata for 16-years. Best, most fun car I have ever owned. Many consider it "simple" and low-powered, but it was so much fun! There's something about modern cars that can't duplicate what these cars had. They were affordable, fun, and easy on the wallet. Seeing this unmodified version is just awesome! (Battery in the trunk also helps with it's lifespan. Heat kills batteries.) Love this car!! Brilliant.
Still own and regularly drive my 1990 miata. All original .Drive it about 7000km every summer. Love it. Never had any issues .Just drove it 430km yesterday. First nice warm day of this year
The only reason I don't rock an early 90s throwback car is the lack of airbags! I live in the land of the landscaper side-husslers and everyone apparently dailies 3/4 ton trucks that would absolutely clobber me :'(
I love the simplicity of the NB1 styling but equally love the slightly sportier mini-viper styling of my NB2. All of them are such fun cars and marvels of engineering.
My 2000 LX still puts a smile on my face, after 23 years of ownership and just over 200k it’s been my daily driver. As you stated so well, it’s the simplistic nature of this vehicle that I have enjoyed for so many years, not to mention the affordable cost of ownership. I owned an NB1 for six years and it was blissfully fun to drive especially on the coilover suspension I installed along with wider tires, a header and exhaust. I maintained everything myself with ease. But, to check off a bucket list item, I replaced my NB1 with a 981 Boxster, which I really admired and enjoyed. But after just 18 months, I missed my old Miata terribly. I missed the simplicity and soul of it. I test drove an ND2 and fell in love all over again. I sold the Boxster and bought an ND2 in January. I've since added an exhaust, but will leave the rest of it alone. If you love driving, you must try a Miata.
I have a similar background…..owned an NB (1999) for 9 years and then some time later (not immediately after), I bought a 981 boxster s. Have had it for 3 years and recently drove an ND2 and an old NB (2000)…..trying to decide to stay with the Porsche, go with an ND1 or ND2 or back the NB
@@stms4411 I sold my '92 NA in 1999 to get into Porsches (944, 986 Boxster, 1970 911 RS-spec restomod, and now a 997.2 C2S). It's the one car I ever regretted selling - yes, even including the longhood 911. I bought my '99 NB1 in 2015 to complement the 997.2, love both of the cars completely but have much more FUN driving the NB1. If you enjoy your 981S and can swing another car (acquisition, maintenance, insurance, parking/storage) I highly recommend both.
Update….went with a 2021 Miata club with bbs/brembo/Recaro package and did an axle back exhaust. It’s great and apparently @mitchellweatherly I’m following your path!
I have a 2001 Miata and I love it!!!! I have had it for many years, it has around 150,000 miles on it. Still runs great. A little hard for an old man to get in and out of bu it is so much fun to drive. It's like a go cart on steroids!
I'm 6'3'' 230 lbs. Miatas are a no-go for me. I really wish I could own one though. Ideally I want a 911, but that's never going to happen, so I've always wanted one of these. I've tried them out and it's very difficult for me to sit comfortably.
Those "tow hooks" are tie downs for overseas shipping & not for yanking out of ditches for fear of damage. The "se" came with 15" wheels. And yes the nb is the real star of the show! It's old enough for a very analog feel, but new enough to have obd2. My daily is a 99se!
I bought 1.8L 2003 model Silver Blues edition (SE in Strato Blue Mica with 16" wheels) last year after from Germany searching for quite some time. It had only 52K km /33K miles under it's belt in very good condition. Runs like a dream.
Love my 1999 Miata NB! I've had it for over 19 years, 54k miles. Top down in spring and back up around Thanksgiving. Never seen snow and looks marvelous. Just bought my 40+ year dream a 61 MGA. Miata's were designed around the British sports car. I love my MGA, but the Miata has a bit more legroom.
I have a 2012 NC. I had 24 cars in 20 years. The miata is the best i ever had. I bought it for $17k and best investment in happiness. Thanks for your great review!

You should get an NA in your channel as well, you'll see some of the stuff that you say is cutting edge was already present in the 1989 year model! Really love what Mazda did with these cars. Also please tell the owner of the car that his radiator is a timebomb! 7:37 That brownish color means that the plastic is on its way out and could explode at any moment :)
This car is in our garage.... a stock 1999 MX-5 NB in highlight silver, but with the small 1.6 with just 109 bhp. So even lighter (990 kg) and even less power... but that's enough. I would have liked to get the 1.8, but when I saw this dirt-cheap, well-maintained and rust-free 1.6 I had to go for it! My mum is too old now to drive it, so I'll have a go at it this summer. I was actually saving up for an NC or ND for myself, but the simplicity of the NB is something special.
I owned a 2001 Miata which I purchased new. The Miata was a lot of fun to drive, but there were some issues with my car. Mazda got into trouble in Canada (and also the US, I believe) for initially misrepresenting the car’s horsepower. The HP claimed in their ads and sales brochures was slightly higher than the actual HP in North American models. People like me who bought their Miata before the ads were corrected were given the option of a) receiving compensation in the form of a cash payment (around CAD$500, if I remember correctly) plus free servicing during the warranty period or b) having Mazda buy back the car. I took option a). My car had two serious problems that were fixed under warranty. The fuel tank was replaced because it could only be completely filled by very slowly adding the last few litres, and the clutch was replaced because of a severe judder.
I did a lot of research on the NBs and I’ll have to say the 2000 is the sweet spot for me. I love the clean facia without the fogs, the classic black gauges with green backlighting. Everything you mentioned too. Regular gas, non-interference, closed deck, iron block makes it bullet proof. Bonus for being 2000 it doesn’t need to be sniffed during a smog test and it’s easy to count the age of the car. I’m probably going to make it more difficult for me to own one one day now 😅.
@@hoaarts6700I have a ‘99. There’s really no measurable difference between a ‘99 and a 2000. Don’t beat yourself up over anything and enjoy your car. That’s what every Miata driver should do regardless of model year.
I have an NA and a '99 NB with 101K Miles. This is my second '99; 1st had over 230K. This is probably the best car; most fun and easy maint that I have owned in over 60 years of driving.

Car Nut your turning into a Miata lover. When you go thru the design reviews your attention to detail is amazing. TY for doing the NB1 2nd Generation Miata as you put the whole idea behind this car into the proper perspective. Its meant to be fun ! What Mazda did was make it simple & reliable. 2 things I enjoy on my 2016 Club but to not modify the stock parts is not ruining the cars as the after market parts are well made. If chosen properly the modifications enhance the driving experience ( like adding a axle back exhaust with a little better sound or the LEDs for the trunk & interior ).
I’ve had 4 NA and now an NB2. Gotta say I prefer the way the NA’s drive and the lower seating position as well as the interior simplicity. VVT does wake them up for sure and the bracing is a welcome addition. Either way you can’t go wrong with a Miata!

The MX-5 is easy to explain, it was really only the Miata for North America and nowhere else. Plus Mazda had different model lines back then, for example, the RX-line with the RX-3, RX-7, RX-8. There was also the MX-line which was the MX-3, MX-5 and then the MX-6. While the pedestrian cars were the 323, 626, 929
It’s worth noting that the MX stands for “Mazda eXperimental”, as it was first used for the MX-81 Aria concept of 1981… The RX line was for the rotary cars - R for “rotary”. Although in peculiar fashion, the MX has also been used for at least one rotary concept car, namely the 1987 MX-04 from 1987. But it’s cool to think that all Miatas share this “experimental” designation, making them an open canvas of sorts for your ideas.
Great review! I have a 99 in British racing green with 38,000 miles. Ours since new. Fun fact: the license plate lights in the trunk also serve as really bright trunk lights! It’s a GREAT car!!
About the license plate lights: in NB2 when you opened the trunk they turned on so you could see better inside! Owned a NB1 and NB2 for 20 years, just awesome!
Year 2000 NB1 1.6 5MT Twilight Blue with 34,000km and unmodified original. 2nd owner, bought 8 years ago. Zero rust. The vinyl hood with glass demist window is still in good condition after 24 years, and I treat it 2 or 3 times a year to keep it from cracking. The hood is rather difficult to get down in very cold weather, so it sort of hangs there at the back until it eventually settles. It is definitely not a fast car but rather than speed on a straight road I more enjoy whizzing around the bendy country roads where I live in central mountainous Japan. I only use 5th gear once in a few months just to make sure it still works ! The gearbox has that interesting notchiness in 2nd gear, but only when moving from 1st and more obvious in cold weather. I drive it in all seasons, but not in snow/ice as I don't have winter tyres for it. Apart from common maintenance replacements, in 8 years I have had to replace only the coil and two sensors (cam angle and crank position). A local Mazda garage does the service and are very keen on me keeping it going. The doors rattle a little over bumps so I might replace the door holding rubbers, with OEM if I can get them. The windows also rattle but I cannot think of a way to stop that except by replacing all the rubbers. But on a smooth road there are no rattles to think about. The tyres originally designed for the roadster have been re-issued so I might be tempted. Other roadster owners wave when passing, so we have a nice community ! I have no intention to modify it or attempt to improve upon the original ideas of the Mazda engineers. Best wishes from Nagano-ken, Japan.
FYI - at 21:17 you mention the license plate lights. On the NB1 they are ONLY license plate lights, however, on the MB2 they double as trunk lights. They illuminate when the trunk is opened even without the headlights/parking lights on. Great review! 99 Silver base automatic. 04 White LS 6-speed.
I was thinking that when he talked about them. Although, only having owned (still own) an MSM/NB2 I did not realize they didn't turn on when the trunk was open. Yes, even though they weren't on when he opened the trunk. I thought I saw a battery disconnect on the battery and figured it was turned off for the video.

Nice video. I own a 2002 Miata LS. While the premium fuel requirement was a bit off-putting at first, I quickly realized that it wasn't all that big an impact for a sports car that routinely gets 30+ MPG. You noted the license plate lamps - on my model, those same lamps double as trunk lights. I thought that was a unique and innovative touch by Mazda. Being an LS model, mine has the upgraded wheels, but is the same silver color as the model you show here. It's old-school enough that I can do a lot of maintenance myself. I did upgrade the stereo unit to something that is Blue Tooth equipped and allows for hands-free phone use. I've not made any engine performance mods because the car is a blast to drive as is. Recently I upgraded the brakes to slotted/drilled rotors, new calipers and switched to braided brake lines all around. This greatly improved braking feel & performance. I also added some interior footwell LED strips that run off the same circuit as the dome light, just for convenience. I've owned the car for 15+ years and enjoy it as much as the first time I test drove it. Keeping this car until I can't drive anymore!
I've a 2002 special edition. Mazda says in the manual that it'll run on regular gasoline but performance is a bit less. The NB2's have a knock sensor and VVT (variable valve timing). Knocks are avoided by adjusting the VVT so performance takes a hit. That said, I've not used regular gas. Thanks for the info on brake line lines! Something I'm considering when the brakes need attention. You might want to consider replacing the air intake with a high flow one. I didn't notice the touted performance increase but the sound is really much better when you floor it. It also gets cooler air. Under $100 and a simple less than 1 hour job.
Many thanks for showcasing the NB, which I feel tends to get overlooked when compared to the NA. While these cars can be enjoyed as top-down cruisers, they are much more fun for spirited drives on your favorite back roads. There's lots of feedback through the turns, which gives confidence without the need for electronic interferences such as traction and stability control.
The 2nd gen is gorgeous. My favorite. Very subtle lines and flares that are perfect. Sadly finding a good one is just about impossible. My gf had the dark blue that was almost purple in the sun. Optioned with beautiful BBS wheels.
I had a 99 nb1 and loved it! Only sold it for the down payment on my first house. However I am saving up to buy another nb1. I had the base model with the 5 speed manual, lsd and a hard dog roll bar.
Nice little introduction to those not in the know - well done. I’ve owned my ‘04 since 2013. I do most of my own maintenance - oil & filter, air filter, plugs & leads, brake and clutch fluid, differential fluid, power steering fluid, coolant flush etc. - all very simple. Apart from rear brake pads, a fuel filter, and having the timing belt replaced (down to age, not failure) it’s not had any other servicing. Believe it or not it’s still on the original battery (shout out to Battery Tender!) - 04/03 date code and Japanese characters on the stickers. Wash, wax, vacuum, over inflate the tires, oil change and engine fogging in the autumn, turn the key in springtime. These are strong cars. One other thing, if you turn the key anti-clockwise in the trunk keyhole, this’ll override the trunk release lever in the centre console. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for an informative video. You have done a very nice review. The subject car is in very good condition over all. I did notice the radiator head tank is turning brown, that is a sign the plastic will crack soon and leak, so a new one is advisable. The dimple damage from the license plate bolts can be avoided by flipping the bracket upside down that lowers the whole plate. This is a non-interference engine, so should the cam timing built break it does not smash the valves into the pistons. I owned a 2000 NB the SE model. That bought you 15" wheels lower profile tires, leather interior and a Torsen limited slip differential, well worth the extra money. I now have a 2003 Shinsen model with low miles, in fact the last one built! If you can get a manual, 5 speed is standard, 6 speed was optional. Some cars also have optional Bilstein shock absorbers. The NB2 (2001 - 2005) is the better car. It came with 16" wheels and even lower profile tires that improve cornering and possible steering as well. As for the premium fuel- use it for the fuel detergent additives. I ruined some expensive sensors and the pre-catayltic converter (CA only) using cheap gas. Go with Top Tier rated fuel. The classic shim and bucket valve adjustment on these is really only necessary with high miles and cheap oils, use full-synthetic. As for mods, my Shinsen has an intake and exhaust by Racing Beat. I was skeptical, but I must say they add a little zing. While the engine is red-lined at 7000 RPM on the standard car the power starts dropping off around 6000. This one keeps pulling to at least 6700 RPM. These are very fun to drive! It is a lot more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow!
I nearly bought a 2002 base Miata 3 years ago, no power steering, no power locks, windows, no AC.. Stripped. How I’ve always liked my cars. 26k original miles, always garaged, green.. I had an upper endoscopy procedure Day I found it online.. gone next day for $5000. I’ll keep eyes peeled! I want a fun reliable vert next my my 92 VW GTI 16v (oh.. the vacuum lines;)
There is also a huge community of knowledgeable people in internet forums and a TONNE of aftermarket parts available, which is extremely valuable for DIY owners wanting to maintain or upgrade their car. There's always something to learn though. In this video I found it interesting the washer bottle is on the right while my '99 has it on the left, so close to the exhaust manifold they needed to add a heat shield between them. I suspect Canadian-market cars had the larger washer bottle because we supposedly drive in the slop 13 months of the year?
I've had my '99 NB1 since Day-1 and 23 years later I wouldn't trade it for anything. Yes, there are cars that have more power, "better" looks, more technology, etc...but I think I'll stick with my "FrankenMiata", thank you very much. And, as he says, it's a dream to work on (most of the time). I know because mine is HEAVILY modified and I take it on-track regularly (to the chagrin of many loy-racers).
I’m on my third Miata. I owned a 1990 NA in perfect condition and regretted selling it, but needed more room for work. My second was the 2000 NB in black, nice upgrade. My current model is the 2001 NB SE, British racing green, nardi interior wood accents. Love the non metallic paint and classic look. Only 3000 built so I’ve restored it. New leather seat skins, new carpeting, replaced the rain rail which was old and brittle. Lots of mechanical work to keep it running perfectly. Still has original soft top in great condition. This one is a keeper, I’ve got a Q3 for practical use, so this one only comes out when I want to smile driving around south Florida.
Future collectible, especially the 99 Miata sport with Standard 5 speed transmission, 15" rims, front air damn, upper front shock brace, Limited Slip differential, sportier springs front and rear and rear trunk spoiler...all stock from Miata right off of the assembly line.
2001 on is the real sweet spot because of the variable valve timing and ABS, bigger brakes and better shocks. The true peak is the Mazdaspeed edition which added a turbo. The NC generation was a step backwards in performance because it got heavier due to the fact Mazda chose to share the platform with the Rx-8.
The VVT engine is interference, so not as robust for track use. The ABS was an option for even the earliest NB, also not universally desirable. Shocks and brakes can be swapped and commonly are… The Mazdaspeed is more a variation on the recipe rather than a peak. It’s considerably heavier (for a Miata) and the engine doesn’t wind out as high as the naturally aspirated unit.
Love your way of explaining the engineering in a simple, straightforward manner that you can understand without being a mechanic! My only quibble (as I’m currently looking to buy a ‘99 NB and am doing research on it) is that you neglected to talk about the thruster bearing issue with early NB’s, would have liked to hear your explanation of it. Plus I believe there was a recall by Mazda regarding a hard to fuel problem with the NB and I would have liked you to address that as well.

I had a 1994 Mazda Miata I had purchased from the original owner in 2013 with 54,000 original miles. She still had the window sticker and everything I gave $3000 for the vehicle. It was black I am 6 foot four. I drove the vehicle for a year. I love it. One of the best cars I have ever had. It was actually one of the first cars I started to work on myself. I drove it until it has 90,000 miles on it. Sold it a year later for $5000. I wish I would’ve never sold it.
36K miles on it in one year, wow. That is indeed an often overlooked virtue of the Miata, it is a great learning platform for DIY auto mechanics. I’ve used my ‘99 NB for this purpose as well. I too am very tall, but I love the basic elemental nature of the car, it’s all about the drive. I don’t plan on ever parting with it.
Had a 94 Miata R-spec. Bought it in FL, drove it back up to Illinois. Didn't dare drive it in winter. Very much enjoyed the car, but had too many. When prices were high, I sold it at a $2000 profit. Guess who wants to get another Miata? 94-95 seem especially desired because of the 1.8l and it does not have to be inspected for emmisions in IL. Thinking of shifting my affections to an NB. Doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to hold out for an NB2.
The Miata is called MX-5 outside the US. Mazda give in the dual name in the US. The license plate lights are in the trunk lid so they shine into the trunk when it's open. Neat trick! The battery on on the passenger side to offset the weight of the driver. The cover for the soft top is called a boot.
What a great video! VERY well researched!! Some minor corrections / extra details: 7:00 that is not the FPR, it's an injector pulse damper (the FPR is in the tank, next to the pump) 7:57 one of the fans is just for the AC condenser 16:57 they're tie down hooks, only meant to be used when shipping these cars around (for shorter trips at least, else were tied down by the suspension). They work great as tow hooks nonetheless, but Mazda advises against that because... you could get your bumper scratched. 😴
I think he mentioned the use of premium fuel is recommended for the higher compression engine and I don't have an issue with that. In my limited experience, premium fuel in higher compression engines is acceptable because I would be looking at the better performance factor. The only downside I have found is these small 4-banger higher compression engines tend towards higher under hood engine temperatures especially when idling during warm outside air temperatures. I know with my 2006 MX-5 I have a ScanGauge to more accurately monitor the engine temp as I don't trust the dash gauge. Also, the plastic expansion tank still appeared to be in good condition but I did replace it with a new OEM one (2024) just to err on the side of caution. Overall, I am more than satisfied with my MX-5 and I intend on it going to someone else in the family worthy enough to appreciate this car as much as I do after I am no longer around, and I'm 72 now so it may happen sooner than later.
You are a true master mechanic! I own a 2013 Prius v5 and a 2018 RAV4 hybrid limited. Both cars have low mileage, are mechanically perfect and look like new. I live in the Chicago area but I’m retired and the cars are garaged. I have no repair or maintenance issues now but in the future, I want your shop to service my cars. How can I find your shop?
It was going so well until you got to the license plate lamps. They are brilliantly placed, as they serve to illuminate the trunk when the lid is open! Putting them below would either require an additional lamp for the trunk or no trunk light. Also, I think the only 2nd gen (NB) that had 14-inch wheels was the 1999, and only on base models. Others had 15-inch and later 16-inch wheels.

Right, you corrected your basic suspension comment. What you did miss is that the licence plate lights turn on when the trunk is opened to illuminate the trunk at night. Now that is design.
You should review a Wankel rotary engine 13b from Rx7. Explaining the viewers how it works, whether it makes torque or not and their reliability which is not the best by many. Although there’s some folks that find ways to make them reliable.
If you need to break to disselerate extremely quick, you may pool the fuel tank door and it wil act as aerodinamic break. Then you pool the ejection lever... 19:20
I want an NB or an NA Miata again...but I make due with my 98 5 speed Sentra.... although a lot less stiff with a rear beam and it's also FWD obviously.
Nice overview of a car I love (I have two). I disagree re it being called the Miata instead of MX-5, it's only the Miata in the US (Eunos Roadster in Japan), and MX-5 fits in with the naming convention of other Mazdas of the period; MX-3, MX-6.
Good point, because they added variable valve timing in 2001 the engine can automatically retard the timing if it senses detonation caused by the higher compression and lower octane gasoline. The more expensive fuel results in a little more power. It's the best of both worlds.

Was hard a a piece of steel… but it was tons of fun 😊 Had to sell it after 2 years of ownership and always missed it. I now have a 184hp 2022 ND2 and will NEVER sell it. I use it only in summer time as a car for fun. Once you drove a Miata / MX-5, you are hooked forever. Great driver cars. Great review by the way!
AMD, It is so reassuring to have the 'other' brands back on the 'other' channel. 😉😂 Unlike the BRZ and BMW Z, the Miata might be the one sports car I would not mind Toyota rebranding as one of their own. I wonder if the 203 hp, Regular fuel A25A-FKS engine would bolt to the 6 speed manual🤔
The whole idea though behind the Miata was never high horsepower. I really don't mind paying for premium fuel in my 2016 Club as it gets very good gas mileage of 29 to 35 mpg. Its quick because the engine provides a flat torque curve thru the gears. Getting the manual 6 speed is the way to go with a supper light clutch. The current ND2 Miata was not designed for a bigger 4 cylinder engines. Can you put a bigger engine in the ND ? Its not that easy. Flying Miata used to do V8 engine conversions but has since stopped doing them due to emission standards.

I drove my 2003 silver Miata off the show-room floor, its still my daily driver - fabulous car.

I just bought one with 220k and plan on driving it another 20 years
when i did all my research i settled with a 2003 as minimum because they made so many things standard that year. loved this car.
I owned an NB1 for six years and it was blissfully fun to drive especially on the coilover suspension I installed along with wider tires, a header and exhaust. I maintained everything myself with ease. But, to check off a bucket list item, I replaced my NB1 with a 981 Boxster, which I really admired and enjoyed. But after just 18 months, I missed my old Miata terribly. I missed the simplicity and soul of it. I test drove an ND2 and fell in love all over again. I sold the Boxster and bought an ND2 in January. I've since added an exhaust, but will leave the rest of it alone. If you love driving, you must try a Miata.
I have a similar background…..owned an NB (1999) for 9 years and then some time later (not immediately after), I bought a 981 boxster s. Have had it for 3 years and recently drove an ND2 and an old NB (2000)…..trying to decide to stay with the Porsche, go with an ND1 or ND2 or back the NB
@@stms4411 I sold my '92 NA in 1999 to get into Porsches (944, 986 Boxster, 1970 911 RS-spec restomod, and now a 997.2 C2S). It's the one car I ever regretted selling - yes, even including the longhood 911. I bought my '99 NB1 in 2015 to complement the 997.2, love both of the cars completely but have much more FUN driving the NB1. If you enjoy your 981S and can swing another car (acquisition, maintenance, insurance, parking/storage) I highly recommend both.
Update….went with a 2021 Miata club with bbs/brembo/Recaro package and did an axle back exhaust. It’s great and apparently @mitchellweatherly I’m following your path!

I have a 2001 Miata and I love it!!!! I have had it for many years, it has around 150,000 miles on it. Still runs great. A little hard for an old man to get in and out of bu it is so much fun to drive. It's like a go cart on steroids!
I'm 6'3'' 230 lbs. Miatas are a no-go for me. I really wish I could own one though. Ideally I want a 911, but that's never going to happen, so I've always wanted one of these. I've tried them out and it's very difficult for me to sit comfortably.
Best British roadster ever made. I have a 6 speed manual 2001 Miata. British racing green and tan. Most smiles per gallon I’ve ever experienced.
Those "tow hooks" are tie downs for overseas shipping & not for yanking out of ditches for fear of damage. The "se" came with 15" wheels. And yes the nb is the real star of the show! It's old enough for a very analog feel, but new enough to have obd2. My daily is a 99se!
I bought 1.8L 2003 model Silver Blues edition (SE in Strato Blue Mica with 16" wheels) last year after from Germany searching for quite some time. It had only 52K km /33K miles under it's belt in very good condition. Runs like a dream.

Love my 1999 Miata NB! I've had it for over 19 years, 54k miles. Top down in spring and back up around Thanksgiving. Never seen snow and looks marvelous. Just bought my 40+ year dream a 61 MGA. Miata's were designed around the British sports car. I love my MGA, but the Miata has a bit more legroom.
I briefly owned an NB Miata, so much fun to drive! (get it with the manual!) The fact that this one is unmodified makes it a 🦄🦄

This car is in our garage.... a stock 1999 MX-5 NB in highlight silver, but with the small 1.6 with just 109 bhp. So even lighter (990 kg) and even less power... but that's enough. I would have liked to get the 1.8, but when I saw this dirt-cheap, well-maintained and rust-free 1.6 I had to go for it!
My mum is too old now to drive it, so I'll have a go at it this summer. I was actually saving up for an NC or ND for myself, but the simplicity of the NB is something special.
The NA and NB really represent the essence of the original formula. You did well to buy your clean example, enjoy!

I owned a 2001 Miata which I purchased new. The Miata was a lot of fun to drive, but there were some issues with my car. Mazda got into trouble in Canada (and also the US, I believe) for initially misrepresenting the car’s horsepower. The HP claimed in their ads and sales brochures was slightly higher than the actual HP in North American models. People like me who bought their Miata before the ads were corrected were given the option of a) receiving compensation in the form of a cash payment (around CAD$500, if I remember correctly) plus free servicing during the warranty period or b) having Mazda buy back the car. I took option a). My car had two serious problems that were fixed under warranty. The fuel tank was replaced because it could only be completely filled by very slowly adding the last few litres, and the clutch was replaced because of a severe judder.
I did a lot of research on the NBs and I’ll have to say the 2000 is the sweet spot for me. I love the clean facia without the fogs, the classic black gauges with green backlighting. Everything you mentioned too. Regular gas, non-interference, closed deck, iron block makes it bullet proof. Bonus for being 2000 it doesn’t need to be sniffed during a smog test and it’s easy to count the age of the car. I’m probably going to make it more difficult for me to own one one day now 😅.

@@hoaarts6700I have a ‘99. There’s really no measurable difference between a ‘99 and a 2000. Don’t beat yourself up over anything and enjoy your car. That’s what every Miata driver should do regardless of model year.
Also in NZ if it’s 2000 or beyond has yearly warrant of fitness, before 2000 it’s every 6 months

I have an NA and a '99 NB with 101K Miles. This is my second '99; 1st had over 230K. This is probably the best car; most fun and easy maint that I have owned in over 60 years of driving.

Car Nut your turning into a Miata lover. When you go thru the design reviews your attention to detail is amazing. TY for doing the NB1 2nd Generation Miata as you put the whole idea behind this car into the proper perspective. Its meant to be fun ! What Mazda did was make it simple & reliable. 2 things I enjoy on my 2016 Club but to not modify the stock parts is not ruining the cars as the after market parts are well made. If chosen properly the modifications enhance the driving experience ( like adding a axle back exhaust with a little better sound or the LEDs for the trunk & interior ).

I’ve had 4 NA and now an NB2. Gotta say I prefer the way the NA’s drive and the lower seating position as well as the interior simplicity.
VVT does wake them up for sure and the bracing is a welcome addition. Either way you can’t go wrong with a Miata!

The MX-5 is easy to explain, it was really only the Miata for North America and nowhere else. Plus Mazda had different model lines back then, for example, the RX-line with the RX-3, RX-7, RX-8. There was also the MX-line which was the MX-3, MX-5 and then the MX-6. While the pedestrian cars were the 323, 626, 929
In Japan it wasn't even a Mazda, it was a Eunos Roadster

It’s worth noting that the MX stands for “Mazda eXperimental”, as it was first used for the MX-81 Aria concept of 1981… The RX line was for the rotary cars - R for “rotary”. Although in peculiar fashion, the MX has also been used for at least one rotary concept car, namely the 1987 MX-04 from 1987.
But it’s cool to think that all Miatas share this “experimental” designation, making them an open canvas of sorts for your ideas.

Year 2000 NB1 1.6 5MT Twilight Blue with 34,000km and unmodified original. 2nd owner, bought 8 years ago. Zero rust. The vinyl hood with glass demist window is still in good condition after 24 years, and I treat it 2 or 3 times a year to keep it from cracking. The hood is rather difficult to get down in very cold weather, so it sort of hangs there at the back until it eventually settles. It is definitely not a fast car but rather than speed on a straight road I more enjoy whizzing around the bendy country roads where I live in central mountainous Japan. I only use 5th gear once in a few months just to make sure it still works ! The gearbox has that interesting notchiness in 2nd gear, but only when moving from 1st and more obvious in cold weather. I drive it in all seasons, but not in snow/ice as I don't have winter tyres for it. Apart from common maintenance replacements, in 8 years I have had to replace only the coil and two sensors (cam angle and crank position). A local Mazda garage does the service and are very keen on me keeping it going. The doors rattle a little over bumps so I might replace the door holding rubbers, with OEM if I can get them. The windows also rattle but I cannot think of a way to stop that except by replacing all the rubbers. But on a smooth road there are no rattles to think about. The tyres originally designed for the roadster have been re-issued so I might be tempted. Other roadster owners wave when passing, so we have a nice community ! I have no intention to modify it or attempt to improve upon the original ideas of the Mazda engineers. Best wishes from Nagano-ken, Japan.

FYI - at 21:17 you mention the license plate lights.
On the NB1 they are ONLY license plate lights, however, on the MB2 they double as trunk lights. They illuminate when the trunk is opened even without the headlights/parking lights on.

I was thinking that when he talked about them. Although, only having owned (still own) an MSM/NB2 I did not realize they didn't turn on when the trunk was open. Yes, even though they weren't on when he opened the trunk. I thought I saw a battery disconnect on the battery and figured it was turned off for the video.

Nice video. I own a 2002 Miata LS. While the premium fuel requirement was a bit off-putting at first, I quickly realized that it wasn't all that big an impact for a sports car that routinely gets 30+ MPG. You noted the license plate lamps - on my model, those same lamps double as trunk lights. I thought that was a unique and innovative touch by Mazda. Being an LS model, mine has the upgraded wheels, but is the same silver color as the model you show here. It's old-school enough that I can do a lot of maintenance myself. I did upgrade the stereo unit to something that is Blue Tooth equipped and allows for hands-free phone use. I've not made any engine performance mods because the car is a blast to drive as is. Recently I upgraded the brakes to slotted/drilled rotors, new calipers and switched to braided brake lines all around. This greatly improved braking feel & performance. I also added some interior footwell LED strips that run off the same circuit as the dome light, just for convenience. I've owned the car for 15+ years and enjoy it as much as the first time I test drove it. Keeping this car until I can't drive anymore!

I've a 2002 special edition. Mazda says in the manual that it'll run on regular gasoline but performance is a bit less. The NB2's have a knock sensor and VVT (variable valve timing). Knocks are avoided by adjusting the VVT so performance takes a hit. That said, I've not used regular gas.

You might want to consider replacing the air intake with a high flow one. I didn't notice the touted performance increase but the sound is really much better when you floor it. It also gets cooler air. Under $100 and a simple less than 1 hour job.
Many thanks for showcasing the NB, which I feel tends to get overlooked when compared to the NA. While these cars can be enjoyed as top-down cruisers, they are much more fun for spirited drives on your favorite back roads. There's lots of feedback through the turns, which gives confidence without the need for electronic interferences such as traction and stability control.

The 2nd gen is gorgeous. My favorite. Very subtle lines and flares that are perfect. Sadly finding a good one is just about impossible. My gf had the dark blue that was almost purple in the sun. Optioned with beautiful BBS wheels.
I had a 99 nb1 and loved it! Only sold it for the down payment on my first house. However I am saving up to buy another nb1. I had the base model with the 5 speed manual, lsd and a hard dog roll bar.

I’ve owned my ‘04 since 2013. I do most of my own maintenance - oil & filter, air filter, plugs & leads, brake and clutch fluid, differential fluid, power steering fluid, coolant flush etc. - all very simple. Apart from rear brake pads, a fuel filter, and having the timing belt replaced (down to age, not failure) it’s not had any other servicing.
Believe it or not it’s still on the original battery (shout out to Battery Tender!) - 04/03 date code and Japanese characters on the stickers.
Wash, wax, vacuum, over inflate the tires, oil change and engine fogging in the autumn, turn the key in springtime. These are strong cars.
One other thing, if you turn the key anti-clockwise in the trunk keyhole, this’ll override the trunk release lever in the centre console.

Thank you for an informative video. You have done a very nice review. The subject car is in very good condition over all. I did notice the radiator head tank is turning brown, that is a sign the plastic will crack soon and leak, so a new one is advisable. The dimple damage from the license plate bolts can be avoided by flipping the bracket upside down that lowers the whole plate. This is a non-interference engine, so should the cam timing built break it does not smash the valves into the pistons.
I owned a 2000 NB the SE model. That bought you 15" wheels lower profile tires, leather interior and a Torsen limited slip differential, well worth the extra money. I now have a 2003 Shinsen model with low miles, in fact the last one built! If you can get a manual, 5 speed is standard, 6 speed was optional. Some cars also have optional Bilstein shock absorbers. The NB2 (2001 - 2005) is the better car. It came with 16" wheels and even lower profile tires that improve cornering and possible steering as well. As for the premium fuel- use it for the fuel detergent additives. I ruined some expensive sensors and the pre-catayltic converter (CA only) using cheap gas. Go with Top Tier rated fuel. The classic shim and bucket valve adjustment on these is really only necessary with high miles and cheap oils, use full-synthetic. As for mods, my Shinsen has an intake and exhaust by Racing Beat. I was skeptical, but I must say they add a little zing. While the engine is red-lined at 7000 RPM on the standard car the power starts dropping off around 6000. This one keeps pulling to at least 6700 RPM.
These are very fun to drive! It is a lot more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow!

I had an upper endoscopy procedure Day I found it online.. gone next day for $5000. I’ll keep eyes peeled! I want a fun reliable vert next my my 92 VW GTI 16v (oh.. the vacuum lines;)

There is also a huge community of knowledgeable people in internet forums and a TONNE of aftermarket parts available, which is extremely valuable for DIY owners wanting to maintain or upgrade their car.
There's always something to learn though. In this video I found it interesting the washer bottle is on the right while my '99 has it on the left, so close to the exhaust manifold they needed to add a heat shield between them. I suspect Canadian-market cars had the larger washer bottle because we supposedly drive in the slop 13 months of the year?
I've had my '99 NB1 since Day-1 and 23 years later I wouldn't trade it for anything. Yes, there are cars that have more power, "better" looks, more technology, etc...but I think I'll stick with my "FrankenMiata", thank you very much. And, as he says, it's a dream to work on (most of the time). I know because mine is HEAVILY modified and I take it on-track regularly (to the chagrin of many loy-racers).

I’m on my third Miata. I owned a 1990 NA in perfect condition and regretted selling it, but needed more room for work. My second was the 2000 NB in black, nice upgrade. My current model is the 2001 NB SE, British racing green, nardi interior wood accents. Love the non metallic paint and classic look. Only 3000 built so I’ve restored it. New leather seat skins, new carpeting, replaced the rain rail which was old and brittle. Lots of mechanical work to keep it running perfectly. Still has original soft top in great condition. This one is a keeper, I’ve got a Q3 for practical use, so this one only comes out when I want to smile driving around south Florida.

2001 on is the real sweet spot because of the variable valve timing and ABS, bigger brakes and better shocks. The true peak is the Mazdaspeed edition which added a turbo. The NC generation was a step backwards in performance because it got heavier due to the fact Mazda chose to share the platform with the Rx-8.
The NC is around the same weight as the Mazdaspeed Miata.
The VVT engine is interference, so not as robust for track use. The ABS was an option for even the earliest NB, also not universally desirable. Shocks and brakes can be swapped and commonly are… The Mazdaspeed is more a variation on the recipe rather than a peak. It’s considerably heavier (for a Miata) and the engine doesn’t wind out as high as the naturally aspirated unit.
I have 2000 LS - in my garage & don't drive her at all in the past 5 years ish. But I still love the car. Plan to drive her more after retirement
Love your way of explaining the engineering in a simple, straightforward manner that you can understand without being a mechanic! My only quibble (as I’m currently looking to buy a ‘99 NB and am doing research on it) is that you neglected to talk about the thruster bearing issue with early NB’s, would have liked to hear your explanation of it. Plus I believe there was a recall by Mazda regarding a hard to fuel problem with the NB and I would have liked you to address that as well.

I had a 1994 Mazda Miata I had purchased from the original owner in 2013 with 54,000 original miles. She still had the window sticker and everything I gave $3000 for the vehicle. It was black I am 6 foot four. I drove the vehicle for a year. I love it. One of the best cars I have ever had. It was actually one of the first cars I started to work on myself. I drove it until it has 90,000 miles on it. Sold it a year later for $5000. I wish I would’ve never sold it.
36K miles on it in one year, wow. That is indeed an often overlooked virtue of the Miata, it is a great learning platform for DIY auto mechanics. I’ve used my ‘99 NB for this purpose as well. I too am very tall, but I love the basic elemental nature of the car, it’s all about the drive. I don’t plan on ever parting with it.

Had a 94 Miata R-spec. Bought it in FL, drove it back up to Illinois. Didn't dare drive it in winter. Very much enjoyed the car, but had too many. When prices were high, I sold it at a $2000 profit. Guess who wants to get another Miata? 94-95 seem especially desired because of the 1.8l and it does not have to be inspected for emmisions in IL. Thinking of shifting my affections to an NB. Doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to hold out for an NB2.

The Miata is called MX-5 outside the US. Mazda give in the dual name in the US. The license plate lights are in the trunk lid so they shine into the trunk when it's open. Neat trick! The battery on on the passenger side to offset the weight of the driver. The cover for the soft top is called a boot.
I have a 2000 LS, he should have gone into how much trouble Mazda went through to give the MX5 50-50 weight balance. That is why it's a joy to drive.

Some minor corrections / extra details:
7:00 that is not the FPR, it's an injector pulse damper (the FPR is in the tank, next to the pump)
7:57 one of the fans is just for the AC condenser
16:57 they're tie down hooks, only meant to be used when shipping these cars around (for shorter trips at least, else were tied down by the suspension). They work great as tow hooks nonetheless, but Mazda advises against that because... you could get your bumper scratched. 😴
I do not have one though i did many years ago. It was a very durable and capable little car.
I think he mentioned the use of premium fuel is recommended for the higher compression engine and I don't have an issue with that. In my limited experience, premium fuel in higher compression engines is acceptable because I would be looking at the better performance factor. The only downside I have found is these small 4-banger higher compression engines tend towards higher under hood engine temperatures especially when idling during warm outside air temperatures. I know with my 2006 MX-5 I have a ScanGauge to more accurately monitor the engine temp as I don't trust the dash gauge. Also, the plastic expansion tank still appeared to be in good condition but I did replace it with a new OEM one (2024) just to err on the side of caution.
Overall, I am more than satisfied with my MX-5 and I intend on it going to someone else in the family worthy enough to appreciate this car as much as I do after I am no longer around, and I'm 72 now so it may happen sooner than later.
You are a true master mechanic! I own a 2013 Prius v5 and a 2018 RAV4 hybrid limited. Both cars have low mileage, are mechanically perfect and look like new. I live in the Chicago area but I’m retired and the cars are garaged. I have no repair or maintenance issues now but in the future, I want your shop to service my cars. How can I find your shop?
It was going so well until you got to the license plate lamps. They are brilliantly placed, as they serve to illuminate the trunk when the lid is open! Putting them below would either require an additional lamp for the trunk or no trunk light.
Also, I think the only 2nd gen (NB) that had 14-inch wheels was the 1999, and only on base models. Others had 15-inch and later 16-inch wheels.

Right, you corrected your basic suspension comment. What you did miss is that the licence plate lights turn on when the trunk is opened to illuminate the trunk at night. Now that is design.
You should review a Wankel rotary engine 13b from Rx7. Explaining the viewers how it works, whether it makes torque or not and their reliability which is not the best by many. Although there’s some folks that find ways to make them reliable.
If you need to break to disselerate extremely quick, you may pool the fuel tank door and it wil act as aerodinamic break.

Nice overview of a car I love (I have two). I disagree re it being called the Miata instead of MX-5, it's only the Miata in the US (Eunos Roadster in Japan), and MX-5 fits in with the naming convention of other Mazdas of the period; MX-3, MX-6.
In the NB2 premium fuel is recommended, not required. Mine has 175,000 miles on regular and runs great!
Good point, because they added variable valve timing in 2001 the engine can automatically retard the timing if it senses detonation caused by the higher compression and lower octane gasoline. The more expensive fuel results in a little more power. It's the best of both worlds.

BTW had an 2003 NB2, 1,6l 110hp, stick shift of course. Got the car lowered with a sport suspension. Was hard a a piece of steel… but it was tons of fun 😊
Had to sell it after 2 years of ownership and always missed it.
I now have a 184hp 2022 ND2 and will NEVER sell it. I use it only in summer time as a car for fun.
Once you drove a Miata / MX-5, you are hooked forever. Great driver cars.

AMD, It is so reassuring to have the 'other' brands back on the 'other' channel. 😉😂 Unlike the BRZ and BMW Z, the Miata might be the one sports car I would not mind Toyota
rebranding as one of their own. I wonder if the 203 hp, Regular fuel A25A-FKS engine would bolt to the 6 speed manual🤔
The whole idea though behind the Miata was never high horsepower. I really don't mind paying for premium fuel in my 2016 Club as it gets very good gas mileage of 29 to 35 mpg. Its quick because the engine provides a flat torque curve thru the gears. Getting the manual 6 speed is the way to go with a supper light clutch. The current ND2 Miata was not designed for a bigger 4 cylinder engines. Can you put a bigger engine in the ND ? Its not that easy. Flying Miata used to do V8 engine conversions but has since stopped doing them due to emission standards.
The desirable nature I’ll take reliable and affordable, we have speed limits. Handling is what matters, and a great shifter.
