If im not mistaking one of my friends put his rifle on the ground like him, and the judges marked him down for dropping the rifle. As i always heard that the rifle is not leave your hands, and it will be considered a drop, if you place it on the ground, hit the barrel on the floor or drop.
At the National High School Drill Team Championship (Where WDC is hosted every year) a drop is defined as happening when a person completely loses control of the weapon and it strikes the drilling surface. Placing the rifle on the ground intentionally is relatively common here and I've never heard of anyone getting points off for it.

This blind fold trick is B.S. I've seen this trick in the 90's. If you think I'm wrong try it yourself with your eyes closed and then tell me I'm a liar.
It's extremely similar to the ones that the King's Guard from Hawaii utilized. The blindfold blocks out around seventy percent of one's vision. You still have a general idea of where the rifle is but catching it remains especially difficult with the lack of clear vision.

He has big spins but no posture or body control. My commander always told me, you can do big spins but in true reality judges look at the small details to see if you have crisp and neat routine, how you can flow from one movement to the other. Although he is good needs to work on basic movements to be able to perfect the others. One of my favorite drillers is rick caldwell and matthew pereau, they were some of the best flowers while keeping good posture and be able to spin without dipping the knee or breaking the T form.
Naval protocol allows for it; if you want to be technical, he kind of lucked out because it IS acceptable. Chi Lin does not speak English - it’s impressive he learned how to do the whole report! :)
