      He did a great job building this kit saw. Super thorough. He used some nice OEM parts during the build as well. When I eventually build one, I will be watching them all the way through!

    I recently had a 400 year old white oak go down due to wet heavy snow this winter. It was a beautiful tree, and I hate to cut it up, but I have begun the clean up. I thought I would give a carbide chain a try and here is what I've learned. The carbide stays sharp way longer than a standard chain but does not cut as fast as a standard chain. Not sure what model stihl saw I have but each cut at the base of that oak took about 3 minutes. Thanks for the practical videos. I always find your content honest and entertaining.

    Clone 660s are good saws, but they are tanks. We use a 660 quite a bit, but only really for felling, its just too heavy to carry around in the woods all day. The best part about the 660 clone saws, is that all factory stuff pretty much fits on them, and Stihl does a good job keeping parts available. Afleetcommand has built a ton of them over the years and has some excellent info on the good and bad, and what parts need replacing and upgrading.
    As far as your test? The 500 is an RPM saw, keep the speed up, and just let it cut, thats why it was a wash from one test to the other, pressure vs not. Dogging it in or pushing it doesnt really make it go faster in big hardwood and just makes you tired. My 362 is the same way, just let it cut and let the chain do the work. The 660 is a torque saw, so it can and will benefit from pushing and dogging it into the wood. My only comment about that 660 in your video is that it seemed to be smoking quite a bit, so there might be a fuel or high speed mix issue, but Im only armchair QBing from what I can see in the video.
    Lastly? The Stihl chains are good, but they lack one thing. Good chip clearing ability. Taking the gullet of the chain down will benefit both of these saws and because they are powerful, will allow for better cutting. You really only need to do it like once or twice over the lifespan of a chain. The 660 will also see a performance increase from this and probably lowering the rakers a bit, its got alot of torque, so make use of it. If your chain is sharp, and the rakers are right, the saw will pull itself into the wood, and need minimal pressure for best performance.

      Thanks for sharing the information. I ran this 500 against a Stock 660 in the past and feels like like they cut about the same to me. Close enough that I wouldn’t choose one over the other.
      So for a guy like me, the difference is that my saw is not as heavy
      I’m a professional who runs a saw for a living

    • @CorwinBos
      @CorwinBos 2 місяці тому

      @@RockhillfarmYT And the weight is exactly why the 500i is the big winner. That 500 is 2 1/2 lbs lighter and gives up maybe .3hp compared to the 660. That makes a huge difference, day in and day out, wear and tear on your body. And the 500 accelerates like nothing else out there. First time I ran one, I was surprised not by the power, because Ive run 660s, 462s, etc, but the ridiculous acceleration, its zero to wide open in a heartbeat. But if you ever get a chance to run a properly ported 660 or 661? Do it, they are monsters, just dog in and hold on.
      Not a pro, but 100s of cords of wood of firewood cut and split and over the last 35 years. For me? My 362 and 261 about split the workload. I have a 660 I can use when needed for felling and bucking out big stuff if I need a 36" bar.

      @@CorwinBos Hey thanks for watching. and great information. The excessive smoke in that saw is its new so i have the car set to be running rich. I'm also currently running 32:1 mixture. This saw was built mainly for chainsaw milling. Just been having fun with it to see what else it would be good at.

    • @CorwinBos
      @CorwinBos 2 місяці тому +1

      @@TheRustyGarageandHomestead I was wondering about that. 32-1 is definitely on the rich side but appropriate for a tank or 3 for break in. Once you get it leaned out at 40 or 50 to 1, she should be a runner and hopefully give that 500 a proper run for its money! I voiced my concern about the Chinese cabs being super hit or miss, mostly miss in my case, on your channel. Sounds like you got one of the decent carbs that will hopefully hold a tune.

      @TheRustyGarageandHomestead 2 місяці тому

      @@CorwinBos i sure hope it will hold a tune. Expect the worse and hope for the best.
      I think it will come alive when its leaned out some.
      I was thinking on leaving it at 32:1. This saw is gonna be doing a good bit of chainsaw milling in the future so i figured a little more lubrication wouldnt hurt. I maybe wrong.

      No, it would be a manually tuned saw where is mine is fuel, injected, and computer controlled and expensive
      I think he spent $450 on that build as opposed to 1700 for a new 500

      @@RockhillfarmYT Wow. I knew yours was which is why I suspected his wasn't. Still, for weekend warriors such as myself $450 is a heck of a value. Need to file that away for future reference in case I get my dream wooded property lol. Thanks Brock!

    I have a 660 clone as well and they are beasts and considerably heavier than a 500i. To my ear (and I'm no expert) I think that clone could be tuned up a bit more. Seemed to be be running a little on the fat side compared to mine. Tuning makes a huge difference in a saw's performance. Just my two cents. They are both great saws though. Good video.

    • @JCWren
      @JCWren 2 місяці тому +1

      It sounded to me like the 660 clone was breaking up a little on the high end when cutting the smaller log. I'm no expert at saw tuning, so I may be completely off base. Some tuners think it should sound like it's starting to "4 stroking" at the top end. While I know what that means, I really don't know if there's any value in it or not. When a big bore kit is installed, do they re-jet or upgrade the carb? I don't have any idea what sort of displacement range the typical 2 cycle carb can cover.

    • @timbervisions
      @timbervisions 2 місяці тому +1

      @JCWren I agree, it should four stroke out of the wood at full throttle, then clean up in the cut. That's how I tune mine at least. I put a tachometer on it as well to verify after I've tune by ear.

    I’m not a fan of big bore kits. Your transfers get squished smaller because of the increase in bore size. Dyno joe proved that those big bore kits really don’t do anything. I’d put up my stihl 064 that’s mostly stock minus the muffler and air filter. Not been ported and is the original 1987 cylinder. 85cc vs 79cc. I’m in sw mo in case your interested. Not saying an 064 is faster. It’d sure be interesting to compare.

      I was thinking about this in general the other day, and I think it's because of mobile app views. It's more of a nuisance and easier to forget to like a video, particularly if auto-play is on. I usually watch in full-screen mode on a PC, and I have to scroll down or un-full-screen it to hit the 'Like' button. I make a conscious effort for YT creators I really like, not as much if I'm just skipping around.
