How To Skive Leather Using A Dremel Drill

- In this video I share my technique for skiving leather using my old Dremel drill to thin down the edges of the leather I'll be using to sew a leather bag.
For the few bags I make using leather i don't warrant the expense of buying an electric skiver machine. I tried a manual skiving machine and various other hand skivers but have found this technique has worked best for me and it doesn't stretch the leather and has given me the most consistent results and faster too.

Wow! Thanks for the idea! This should work for small jobs like watch bands.
You’re welcome Gary and I think this would definitely work for skiving leather for watch bands and other small projects. By using different drill bits you could really control exactly where you want to skive your leather and it wouldn’t be anywhere near as messy as skiving larger pieces of leather. I now have a bell skiving machine and it would be so hard to skive small detailed areas on something as small as a watch band. So I would definitely using my Dremel drill for those kinds of projects.
I use my dremel for this, it works fairly well, but good Lord, what a mess it makes. Better to do it outside, or use a vacuum like you're doing (smart how you do it). A skiving knife however makes a much cleaner cut without all the bumps, but takes much more skill.
It sure does make a mess 😂. I also have a skiving knife and always love experimenting with different options. Ideally I’d love a skiving machine... definitely on my bucket list 😆

You're welcome and I'm glad you found it helpful. It's a bit messy but gets the job done and gives you the freedom to skive the leather exactly where you want... even in those awkward spots.
I’ve done that to age the cuffs of jeans before, but I put a foot power control pedal ($9.99 Amazon) on my Dremel and used a bench vice to hold my Dremel, then just aged the cuffs using my foot to control the Dremel, and both hands to hold the jeans.
Oooh love the idea of a foot pedal on your Dremel and ageing the cuffs of your jeans . I’ve used a bench vice too to hold my Dremel which works great for when I want to sand the raw edges of my leather before apply edge coat paint.

Ingenuity at it's best. Just a note: If you use a flex hose or angle attachment you'll be able to get the vacuum's nozzle angled so it catches the leather dust as it comes off of the leather. In any case you have a great idea and thanks for sharing.

Using the adapter would stop the air from deemed stopping the vacuum from grabbing it whilst in possible spot without the air from dremel blowing it around. Hook up dremel with attachment and air will not affect the vacuum. Also a little plastic bottle could stop anything flying off if use a makeshift cover with it. Clear plastic bottle to help vacuum get the fluff! Still luckily in a garage so maybe not needed. Airflow is messed up but good idea. Could you set up an adjustable jig to be exact all way around without worrying about too much off and wasted load of leather.

Looked like an awesome idea , and worked well. However, when I tried it I wasn’t prepared for the mess it made! Lol. Even though I was out on my deck... the leather fuzz flying around was crazy! But, it worked well in the absence of a skiver.
That’s definitely the downside and which is why I used the vacuum cleaner and it help a bit with all that fuzz 😂 I’d love a skiver but for the amount of skiving I do I can’t justify the price of a skiver well not at this stage anyway 😆
I didn’t have that kind of vacuum or would have. They are way expensive for a hobbyist. I did just see a small, bench mount, manually operated green one on eBay for around $30.00 Looked up a UA-cam review on one. Seems to work fair enough to give it a try.
@@maryirwinartdesign8235 I have one of those manual bench mount skivers as well. A lot less messy but did find the leather I was using stretched quite a bit each has there pros and cons. The main thing with the little bench mount manual skiver is to use sharp blades and have found they get blunt quite quickly so have plenty on hand. Mine came with a pack of blades. It’s actually fun but also timely playing around with different tools 😆

Sometimes a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do to get the job done 😂 Fortunately now I have a skiving machine and probably only release 100000 dust particles and don’t break any sound barriers either 😂

The brand I have is Voltex but basically most of them are made by the same manufacturer and just branded and priced differently. If you research bell skiving machines you’ll see all the different brands and how they basically all look the same.

I’m starting with 1.5mm leather for book binding and need to get that still thinner, do you think I dare risk this?
I always test on a scrap piece first. This also gives you the opportunity to learn how to handle the drill and how much pressure and the angle to hold the drill. It's a technique you need to practice and experiment with before you work on your project. Practice is how we learn to perfect techniques to develop our skills.
That's what I'm interested in trying it for, too.
Did it work on lightweight leather?
I'm new to leatherwork. Can you use the Dremel to burnish too?
You can by attaching a burnishing tool.
Does this work on super soft leather like Nappa or goat leather too?
Personally I haven't tried it but I'm sure if you held the leather securely and used a light touch it should.
Worked on my super soft hand pebble grain 1-2mm upholstery cowhide.

If you don’t like it don’t watch... easy. Feel free to make your own videos and share your techniques without having to explain what and why your doing things. I’m not a specialist... I was just sharing a technique I use to use before I bought my bell skiving machine.

@@4golfing I definitely didn’t let it get to me. This method worked a treat for me when I didn’t have my skiving machine. And if something unforeseen did happen to my skiving machine I would definitely use this same technique again 😃 Where there’s a will there’s a way and I was determined to make leather bags one way or another 😂
