I love this song but it is so frustrating that Kiedis' verse lyrics are not up to the quality of the musical composition which is highly memorable, original and unusually sophisticated for a rock song aimed at a mass audience. And the chorus is killer! This song could have been a top 5 song in the RHCP catalogue if it had better lyrics. Kiedis' work here just doesn't cut it. I could go on and on about the weaknesses of the lyrics. But suffice it to say that it is an unintelligible incoherent mess, an unfocused string of poorly chosen images/symbols that fail to communicate much of anything other than a wolverine throwing dice in a flooded lowrise! I am surprised Rick Rubin didn't insist Kiedis do a re-write.
