It looks like one bit of the stick splintered and caught in the recess of the bullet. From there, I wonder if the tip of the splinter sitting in the cup was keeping the rest of the match from coming in contact with the front edge of the bullet, and the friction from the spinning wasn't enough to start the matchstick rotating until it gets pushed back against the bullet for long enough for it to "grab". Clearly you need to start experimenting until you find a way to recreate this effect. Maybe tiny metal pins driven through the matches to simulate that little splinter and trying to align one so that the pin gets "caught" in the hollow point.... So weird wasn't it? Yeah, every once in a while you just have to goof off in the garage. I still think about you two when I see the pain splotches on the ceiling!
@@smartereveryday You could light the match with a match with an air gun, something you also have lots of experience with... Or throw striking paper at a regular non-strike-everywhere match.
Buddy of mine is a mechanical engineer who worked for Chrysler. If I recall the details correctly, he told me about a time they had a problem during testing of a seat latch which failed once during a crash test. It required high speed video to watch a sequence of events that seemed so improbable that you'd think they were impossible.
I remember when I asked you to shoot towards the camera in slow mo with an airgun and put some safety glass in front of your camera, lol I was so chuffed when you put my name on the video ,but that was my old channel before the anti hutters shut me down 😂😂
Sixty years ago, my grandfather walked me out to the machine shed on the family farm. He gave me a box of .22 shells and a single-shot rifle. He went down and put a strike anywhere match (farmer match) in a crack in the wood. He walked back about 30 feet, took one shot, and lit the match. He said to me, David, stay here and keep shooting till you can light that match, and at about 75ish, I finally lit the match and then lit more multiple times after that. It’s not new. We’ve been doing it for a long time. I enjoy your channel! Thank you for all your hard work!
Last week we tried lighting a match with our waterjet to no avail... maybe we just needed to be more precise. We were definitely not using 10ths of a milimeter lol. Also that match flying with the bullet was hilarious
@@BupaDuck water jets cut material via friction with insanely fast/high pressure water in a super thin stream so its reasonable that it could light a match if you were precise enough, its not like its a hose soaking the match and making it impossible to ignite
I LOVE that the final run looks like the bullet is carrying the torch! Also, your final words for this episode was really lovely, and totally reminded me of how my buddies and I get together for as much of the mundane as we do the zany, and I think that's a wonderful message. You bring so much positivity and fun to the minutes we share, and I'm thankful for it!
I worked at The Ohio Match Company in 1971 in the Chemistry Lab, the Strike Anywhere Tip was made of Potassium Chlorate and Red Phosphorous. Which as you may know is a contact ignition composition. You could light those matches on any rough surface, even denim jeans. The striking surface on books and boxes was Red Phosphorous and Carbon Black and was printed on the paper in the press room (where I also worked for a time). The friction of the Potassium Chlorate in the match tip against the Red Phosphorous is what caused the match to light.
Well again I'm trying to do something that's good but I think now again it's not there because of the "Your Address:" It's because of the hacker and you don't want that though. 15:59 I know they're trying to do better because of the hackers and what they're doing for the @ScammerPayback because of UA-cam.
When I was in boy scouts in the 90s, for summer camp we send a couple scouts to the camp quartermaster and buy a box of strike anywhere matches for the troop and use that for starting campfires and lanterns for the week. We were taught how to start fires without matches of course, but day to day we didn't use those. I remember when it was my turn, the person I was with got to carry them back but he tripped and dropped the full, unopened box. It immediately burst into flames. Ever since then I've never questioned why people wanted them banned. The reactions to the hitchiking match here were just too wonderful. I had to look at it a while to convince myself it wasn't a clever edit gag so I can't imagine how it felt in person.
Banning anything limits the ability to go beyond the unknown to the known. Handling them with built in precautions should suffice to still have them available. Nuclear weapons aren’t banned there limited numbers is due to the complexity to make one.
@@bobbailey4954 If your solution is for matches to adhere to the same safety regulations as nuclear weapons they're still going to be jus as difficult for regular people to find.
When I was a kid my uncle told me about a game at a fall fair probably in the 40s where you had to light a match with a 22 from 20 feet free hand. He said he could shoot the head off but it was impossible to light a match like that. So 11 or 12yr old me took that as a challenge and practiced all winter with my air rifle. By spring I could light a match from 20 feet about 1 in every 10 tries. When I showed him he gave me $20. That was big money in the 80s.

1:36 I have a very funny story for you. The reason why those matches are so hard to get is they are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS in bulk packaging. I worked at a hardware store that sold them and before my time there there was an email that was sent out warning people that they under no circumstances should so much as DROP a box of strike anywhere else they will go off. An employee missed the email, was informed by a coworker, did not believe said coworker, and proceeded to spike the individual box of matches like a football straight into the ground and it IMMEDIATELY caught fire causing him to drop the rest of the box which upon contacting the floor also caught on fire Fire extinguisher was used and nobody was injured, no product/property damage other than the matches (thankfully)
@caseykline2327….please go into politics. The way you can spin BS makes you perfect for the democrat party. I grew up with the real strike anywhere matches, not the crappy green tips . They were safe and did not “go off” when dropped or shook. The goobermint petitioned for their demise because of the phosphorus content.
@@Dixler683it’s funny you republicans use anecdotes and personal experiences as your basis for reality. Listen to other peoples experiences. Look at the data. They have to be packaged extremely specifically as to not accidentally light. That’s from Cornell University, not me.
@@LOSERLUCAS He knows these ones aren't safe, he's saying phosphorus ones used to be. But they were poisonous lol so hardly better, and banned over 100 years ago

History and university “facts” are based on WHOM is teaching the course or writing the “history”. IE while attending a major university an entire semester of geological studies was devoted to the GLOMAR CHALLENGER research vessel. It was a deep sea research vessel designed to explore the pacific trench . Years later after the USSR fell it was revealed the true intent. The vessel was financed and built specifically for the CIA to reach a sunken Russian nuclear submarine before the Soviets could destroy it and its vital secrets. The entire deep sea research mission was a SCAM, yet it was taught to us as fact. The Glomar was a failure for scientific research and was layer scrapped . Yet it was presented as fact. So much for your Cornel data. The farmer match was safe when used in a normal sane manner. They did not spontaneously ignite. They were carried loosely in a pocket with no problems. The specific packaging you reference was : 250 matches to a box, heads facing in one direction and reversing for each layer. That was it. Just like a gun they were safe until handled by a moron. Destin - another question - Does the use of a .22 short sub-sonic affect the flight characteristics of the round in close distances to the target, or is a round more accurate in those circumstances?
I love the energy transformation. You’re going from mechanical energy, to chemical energy, to kinetic energy, back to mechanical energy, back to chemical energy and finally to thermal energy.
I love the kids' great discovery - all the other rocks break and this one doesn't. I love it when kids make these "big" discoveries and you can just see the wheels turning in a way that nothing but exploring the world themselves can do.
Love the message towards the end. People really are more important than accomplishments, it took me too long to learn and I'm so glad you spread the word! 1Thess5:11 was a great cap ;) As a retired gunsmith I wanna throw out a few pointers: -Laser boresighters are junk, and are only useful for getting "kinda close" without just manually boresighting the old fashioned (free) way. -Rimfire ammo is always inherently inconsistent- this means failures and inaccuracy are inevitable. -addendum; "Accuracy" in firearms means something different than the normal scientific setting. Think consistency, i.e. an accurate gun is one that makes a small group size, regardless how close to the center of the target. -Hence, hitting something that small is a challenge regardless how close to the muzzle you are. Well done! -If you want to shoot a match straight, wrap it in paper patching until it fits slightly snug. And always remember, weight-forward will be more stable, weight-rearward will be less stable. Love this work, remind me of your classics!
@@calebs4887 Rimfires are usually mass produced, although Match ( see what I did there) grade CCI ammo is usually much more accurate than the standard stuff. Rimfires are often inconsistent with the priming material, this too will cause inconsistent velocities. Serious presion shooters handload centerfire ammo with everything from the projectile, powder, cases precision weighed. Primers and powders are kept separate by lot and production dates. The rifling twist rate, bullet weight and wind factors in greatly also. The smallest variation in anything causes inconsistencies in your shot placement.
@@calebs4887 Rimfire ammo is inherently less consistent than centerfire for a couple reasons. Different priming compounds applied differently around a circumference that can't be controlled as closely as a centerfire cup. They're also a much smaller than typical charge (amount of powder), so any variation is magnified; and of course, engineered more for economy than precision, for a variety of reasons. Chris Baker at LuckyGunner has done some really good technical background on this, look for his videos "Is .22 LR Too Unreliable for Self-Defense?" and "How .22LR Ammo is Made" the latter of which contains some fascinating footage of rarely seen manufacturing processes!
@@Thestargazer56 Eley Match .22's are advertised to have the most consistent priming of any rimfire ammo. Mass production has them dropping a tiny dab into the case then spinning it to distribute it...more or less...around the rim. Made in the billions per year...I've pulled bullets from many brands of ammo and found spots without compound now and then...which cause a misfire if the firing pin strikes right there. Those are the ones that will fire when you chamber the round in another orientation and I do wish more companies would make rimfire guns with dual firing pins which would be more reliable. I'm not sure how Eley does their priming but it does seem to make for more consistent velocities which are critical for precision work. The high-speed video shows some of the bullets yawing quite a bit which will be hurting the attempts to light matches. This could be from the Shorts being less than happy with the 1-16 twist in the Ruger barrel...or the jump to the rifling in the longer Long Rifle chamber is less than ideal for accuracy. My 10/22 has a target barrel with much tighter chamber that starts to engrave the rifling when the bullet is fully inserted and is a real tack driver. This sometimes makes extraction of an unfired round take more force than the extractor can muster so you have to be careful to not leave a live round in there even if you've racked the bolt several times to clear it.
The best part of this video is that you and your friend are doing awesome friend stuff. Your advice at the end is so important. After losing 2 friends this past February to cancer, I decided to fly out to see an old Army buddy, surprise birthday party. 18 years too long. Thank you for putting out such great videos.
That last experiment with the match in the barrel was amazing! I did not expect the match to make it out of the barrel in one piece, not to mention getting pushed by the bullet mid flight.
This is everything I love about Destin's channel. The unabashed excitement of the unexpected, the pure joy of just doing something you love, and the little life lesson tips. There was no need for any of this. We're not solving any problems in the world by striking matches with bullets. It's not ending war or famine. But it IS showing that sometimes... just goofing around with close friends or family can fill your life in a positive way. Thanks Destin for letting me hang out and mess around in your garage with you. I loved it... even if I was hundreds of miles away.
As you said at the end, we don't know each other. But thank you, Destin, for goofing off in the garage (and everywhere else), but more importantly, for sharing it with the world. Oof. The UA-cam messaging system. Boy it sure is great we got that G+ integration that completely destroyed that, and then we never got it back after G+ was trashed so now there's no good way to have any kind of effective long-term communication on UA-cam.
I live about 10 minutes from the old Diamond and Blue Tip match factories, so this reminds me of my stomping grounds. Too bad we don’t have smell-o-vision yet, because the scent of gun powder and matches was probably heavenly. Thanks for the great vid Destin!

The thing people don’t quite understand about those lasers is, they aren’t truly lined up with the bore. As you mentioned mentioned about the barrel moving, taking the laser out will do the same thing. Even the adjustable lasers where you rotate them to “zero” the laser, it’s not taking barrel harmonics in to account, so it can get you really close, but not the degree of precision needed. All of this is assuming your rifle is consistent enough too. What I probably would’ve done is drawn some thing on a backstop to aim at and then seen where it hits and that’s gonna be your offset. Then put a target or something along those lines where you intend to put the matches verified by shooting your point of aim again, and attempting to line the matches up with the very tip of that grease ring from the round and adjust accordingly. That said, you made it work, so that’s awesome and the results were amazing!
That last experiment with the match in the barrel was amazing! I did not expect the match to make it out of the barrel in one piece, not to mention getting pushed by the bullet mid flight.
Yeah, I was expecting splinters myself. I guess it makes sense though. Subsonic .22 short is a pretty anemic round and it gets accelerated the whole length of the barrel instead of instantaneously.
aww, thanks for the mention about hanging out with you in the garage. i miss a lot of your videos nowadays, but you and about a half-dozen other youtube staples of mine have been like a virtual big sibling motivating and inspiring me over the years to pursue knowledge and for that i thank you.

It's always a pleasure to see what you're up to. It was fun to see two old friends laughing and hanging out like this. you can make strike anywhere matches by harvesting the material from the matchbook and mixing it with the material from a few sacrificial matches. mix it into a paste and dip your matches in the substance and let it dry. I keep a bunch of these in my go pack for camping.
@@sooyster4033 you can scrape the stuff from the striker off the box with a razor blade. Just be careful mixing the match head and striker powder. It makes something called Armstrong's mixture and it's shock sensitive and explosive.
Wait, what happened to allow the match to be carried by the bullet like that? It must have somehow scooted the stick right to the balance point where air resistance was equal on both sides. Otherwise it would have blown off one side or the other pretty much instantly right? Man you need to try that a few more times and see if the match gets carried by the bullet consistently. I want to see if there's a self aligning thing going on where the bullet finds the center of the match automatically
I think the hollow point of the bullet captured a tiny sliver from the match that was still attached to the match. The drag on the match was just right and the sliver was strong enough to hold the match to the bullet during the short flight to the field of view.
Before watching the rest I think the issue for the laser making each shot too low was the laser beam is much smaller diameter than a 22 caliber round. Therefore making the aim just slightly off. I'm curious to see if you came to the same conclusion.
18:28 This struck me even more that that rogue match head. Wow, a profound humanity lesson from an engineer! I came for the nerd-out "oh man" but you got me with something 1,000,000 times more awesome. Thank you.

Thank you for the moral to the story. That is more precise than all of the measurements used to strike a match with a bullet. Friendship/love is the most precious gift the Lord gave us. He showed us true love by his son and it is the that Love that saves us. What an inspirational video.
Also, if you have strike anywhere matches, it is important to put the whole box in a large mouth mason jar... moisture can get to them, and also, you don't want mice chewing on them; even if you don't think you have mice... better safe than sorry.
Hey Destin, That is a really cool video. I am a little curious as to why there is a delay before the fire starts. Also, many years ago, I used to shoot strike anywhere matches out of a BB gun without the BBs. I found out that the match would explode when it hit a solid surface. Give that a try with your new matches. Keep up the good work.
The delay is because while it looks fast, this is a relatively slow chemical reaction so people have a delay between when they strike the match and when it starts burning in earnest. Reduces the burning of striking surfaces.
I just replied about doing the same thing with my BB gun as a kid. I have no idea how I figured it out, as this was long before UA-cam and social media. The match fit in the barrel and that is all that mattered to me as a kid. Crazy how so many of us did the exact same thing 😲
I almost exclusively use CCI standard velocity in a bolt action with a suppressor and its hard to tell the difference compared to the pricey subsonic stuff imho.
The thing is, you really put yourself into these amazing videos, Destin, so I personally feel like I do know you. And if I tell you that my grin is often almost as big as yours at times like these, and that many of your hair-brained projects are totally something I would do myself, that should tell you that in a way, you know me also.

American engineers know and use both measuring systems, as do I. Some measuring systems don't make sense to use in certain applications and vice versa.
There was an arcade on main street in Junction City Kansas in the late 1960s that challenged people to light a match with a 22 short rifle from a distance of (by memory here) 8 ft or so. I figured out the secret and was able to light the match about half the time. I won about a months worth of free plays on all the pinball machines before they shut me down. The proprietor would surreptitiously mess with the rear sight overnight, but he didn't know my dad had taught me the power of Kentucky Windage. One or two tries and I was right back to lighting that match every other shot. I still respect the guy for never messing with the matches. I was 14. I would have never figured it out.

Yeah... so the last slowmo shot is absolutely ridiculous. I discuss theories on the second channel, but no idea how that happened.
@smartereveryday How is that not a youtube short ?!?!? then I checked , you don't do yt shorts. Why is that ?

I have a very funny story for you. The reason why those matches are so hard to get is they are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS in bulk packaging. I worked at a hardware store that sold them and before my time there there was an email that was sent out warning people that they under no circumstances should so much as DROP a box of strike anywhere else they will go off. An employee missed the email, was informed by a coworker, did not believe said coworker, and proceeded to spike the individual box of matches like a football straight into the ground and it IMMEDIATELY caught fire causing him to drop the rest of the box which upon contacting the floor also caught on fire
Fire extinguisher was used and nobody was injured, no product/property damage other than the matches (thankfully)

@@LOSERLUCAS its funny to listen to a democrat argue a point based on emotion and skewed data. Don’t project your clouded thoughts as true fact. Maybe democrat young fools should not be so gullible having no real life experience and only relying on what they are told by “experts”. Love the message towards the end. People really are more important than accomplishments, it took me too long to learn and I'm so glad you spread the word! 1Thess5:11 was a great cap ;)
As a retired gunsmith I wanna throw out a few pointers:
-Laser boresighters are junk, and are only useful for getting "kinda close" without just manually boresighting the old fashioned (free) way.
Out of curiosity, what about rimfire cartridges makes them less accurate/consistant/reliable than centerfire?

Thanks for the upload and for the experiment.
Then there's the extra thing of bullet diameter needing to be accounted for
@@Camera-Guy_ODST that’s why you’d use the grease ring as your starting point, the diameter of the projectile is probably the most consistent factor.

you can make strike anywhere matches by harvesting the material from the matchbook and mixing it with the material from a few sacrificial matches. mix it into a paste and dip your matches in the substance and let it dry.
I keep a bunch of these in my go pack for camping.

That's what I love about your channel. Fun facts lead to more questions, lead to fun facts.
I think the hollow point of the bullet captured a tiny sliver from the match that was still attached to the match. The drag on the match was just right and the sliver was strong enough to hold the match to the bullet during the short flight to the field of view.
“Hey it’s me Dahmer, welcome to smarter every day” I thought you were gonna start the vid with a bit with those new glasses😭
As usual this more than matched my expectations.
Before watching the rest I think the issue for the laser making each shot too low was the laser beam is much smaller diameter than a 22 caliber round. Therefore making the aim just slightly off. I'm curious to see if you came to the same conclusion.

" you know it's real when you add a new column to your spreadsheet "... man.. you know it's real when you HAVE a spreadsheet!
Epic content as always!
17:27 - Looks to me like a splinter from the matchstick got trapped in the hollow point of the round...
And it kept it perfectly verticle
"I'm grateful that you want to goof off in the garage with me"
I also love goofing off in a submarine, at the coast guard, the camera repair shop, with explosive bats, supersonic baseball canons and moe!
1. Glue match to bullet so its pointing.
Alt:
1. Use static electricity to light match with something shot at it.
2. Use high pressure release gas instead of gun powder to make the shot cleaner.
3. Fire something other than bullet at it, toy? Indestructible Destin Rock from trip?
Q. Is the bullet lighting the match slightly on the side? ie tip of dome has less surface area so apex of the side lights better because there is more surface area?
Always fun to watch.
Thanks

Thank you for the moral to the story. That is more precise than all of the measurements used to strike a match with a bullet. Friendship/love is the most precious gift the Lord gave us. He showed us true love by his son and it is the that Love that saves us. What an inspirational video.
Hey I'm smarter today!
Now we just need Destin to light a match with a prince rupert drop. 😂
Nerdy Dude Perfect
I’ve gotta try this with the CCI quiet extra-subsonic 22 cartridges! This is such a cool idea!
Get a 22lr sizing die too. The tolerances for 22s tends to be all over the place.
Go one step farther and try Colibri rounds. These are quieter than an air-powered BB rifle.
16:47, Destin, it's not apparent from the video on the last match, but did you guys have the cardboard still in place for this shot? If so, how did the match get through it?
The hole is well-established, and the match is under 0.22" in diameter. Unless it tumbles right out of the barrel, it should be fine.
@@Stevarooni sure but the match comes into frame at a 45 degree angle
@@larrybudpossible the match hit the cardboard causing the 45 degree angle.. will never know unless there was a camera on the cardboard.
@@larrybud yeah, sorry, I replied while still watching the video. It was all kinds of awkward!
@@nicholasfoley7105 yeah, too bad there wasn't a camera on the muzzle. oh well, one of the coolest things Destin has done (and that's saying a lot!)
5:46 *the most american way* to make fire
No
I love how when you say "we really started honing in on things" one of you guys in the video is picking up a mallet (just before the 12 minute mark).
Very fun video guys. Thanks
question. this Nanlux light. is it just a spot light or can it be used to light up the area of the front end of a car. i do pedestrian testing on cars and use phantom cameras but have been struggle bussing trying to get the right light
It has different shrouds you can put on the front end. If you look closely attention you can see I changed it during the video.
@@smartereveryday Did you change this from, "If you pay attention..? To "If you look closely..' and "attention" ended up being a hitchhiker? I can almost see you wince at the possibility of upsetting someone by suggesting they're weren't paying attention.
[visible confusion]
He's shooting in his garage but he's using millimetres, what country is it?
He’s basically a redneck NASA engineer
American engineers know and use both measuring systems, as do I. Some measuring systems don't make sense to use in certain applications and vice versa.
Your analogy of friendship is exactly why I’m always anxious to see your videos YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR
I was 14. I would have never figured it out.
this is spot on the best video. The sheet dedication and shots are incredible
John is so cool
Love seeing the less awkward more comfortable side of you it’s cool y’all got that connection
I'm glad you have friends. That sounds nice.
I want to thank you, too, for convincing me it was worth traveling 8 hours to view totality during the eclipse on April 8, 2024. Surrounded by loved ones, I spent 3 minutes and 51 seconds viewing the most fantastic sight with my naked eyes. We were near Russellville, Arkansas, and enjoyed a NASA presentation two days before the event. Speaking with one of the scientists there, he asked me if I had ever heard of a UA-cam channel called SmarterEveryDay. I had to tell him that you were the reason I was there. You gave me the final push to make the trip. Thank you.
I accidentally read the title as "380,117 flames per second".
Everybody loves seeing someone enjoying their time with a friend...
Thank you for investing your time to create these videos so we can hang out with you on your garage
Hey @smartereveryday I really hope that the anydesk address shown at 15:57 isn't something you need to worry about anyone using to try to get access to your systems
It'd be strange for him to miss something sensitive given he blurred out other IDs and even his whiteboard in his edit bay. I'd bet his opsec is pretty good ;)
My son and I watch your videos all the time together. Thank you for doing this
"This match just like HEY MAN!" My favorite quote from any video in the history of this channel. Pure gold. Thank you so much for that Destin.
Hanging out with friends, having fun. Almost the best thing in life.
Definitely came here for the video but I gotta admit, the sponsor got me. 😂 Currently running CFD on a workstation at work and I am constantly checking if there are any errors using remote access at home. The options are very limited to say the least but watching this video is godsend with the sponsor. Will definitely download and try it! Thank you! Keep up the good and quality work! ❤
Thanks for all you do Destin. My whole family is grateful for you!
