It never ceases to amaze me how family oriented elephants are. They welcome new members, young and old, with the same enthusiasm. If only humans could be as kind to strangers.
They are one of the very few species of mammal that recognizes themselves in a mirror rather than thinking the image is a separate entity, primates also do this
@@Winston-xh6xn I wonder if they're so happy because they understand the place they are in, they are all rescued elephants and when the truck shows up, it means another has been rescued and will now be safe with a new family
There is no doubt in my mind that elephants are highly emotional beings, in the best way possible. Their love for their own kind is sometimes way better than some humans can ever have for our own kin.❤🐘❤
Imagine being Dok Koon, in a truck, not knowing where you are going, and then you see a bunch of elephants running to greet you. What an emotional roller coaster ride he had that day. Glad he is among friends now.
That looks to me more like territorial behaviour than welcoming behaviour. You see several elephants clawing at the ground and they also surround the human the way they would with a young elephant while there is predators near. Finally, you also see elephants urinating a sign they are marking territory.
@@obelisk21Did you get your elephants facts from a 80s tweaker? Elephants don’t urinate to mark their territory they are not dogs. And elephants are nomadic creatures with no set territory. If they were angry or stressed they would have secretions coming down the sides of the faces. They would’ve attacked. Gosh you’re slow.
Yes, exactly. I hesitate to get in front of my cats when they are super excited and trying to get to something. No way I'd get in front of an elephant like that!
There is a clear risk involved but if you have ever spent time around horses you understand the risk exists there as well. Training an animal requires that man takes the risk. This video touched my heart! These elephants don't care where these new elephant came from, but rush to welcome them. They don't care about such a trivial thing! They just know they are the same species and want to let them know that they are happy to meet them. Too bad humans can't be more like them!
Wow!! Imagine being the new kid on the block and just being welcomed and celebrated like that! Elephants seem to be more evolved and compassionate than humans! Their caretakers are the exception!
Fantastic welcome. Would love the clip to be a bit longer so we could see the herd interacting w/the new arrival once off truck. Thanks for all your love & generosity taking care of these giants. ❤❤❤
They usually keep the newcomers in a separate pen for awhile so that they get acclimated to their surroundings and so as to not stress them all out too much. The new elephant will net veterinarian care, medicine, food, water, etc., so they keep them separated until they’re sure they’re up to mixing with the others.
@toscadonna Oh, I understand the necessity of what your saying, however, it looked as though they were taking him off the truck while the others were reaching out their trunks thru the slats on the truck. At the end, they had opened the back door to let him out & the other elephants were right there.
@@dhtisme7034 true but it would not surprise me if the herd was lured away after they had made their greetings…. These elephants likely remember their own arrival to this sanctuary and know the routine
They keep them separated for a quarantine period to make sure the new arrival doesn’t have anything contagious that can affect the rest of the herd, and also some acclimatising, and to get to know the mahout’s so that they feel safe to come to them if they’re injured etc. but the herd will be able to see them and they will be able to call to each other.
