Should school start later?

- The majority of American middle and high schools start super early - with some school bus pick-ups beginning before sunrise. Studies have shown that it can be dangerous and unhealthy for teens to start school early for a whole host of reasons. There’s even a a nationwide movement to delay school start-times. What’s the reason behind early morning hours? It turns out, the main factor is cost. Nora looks at the cost and consequences of school start times.

Thanks for watching everyone! It’s cool to read the comments already about when your schools start or started, especially comparing to schools abroad. Keep sharing! Personally, my high school started at 7:50 but the busses got there between 7:15 and 7:30 and we’d hang out in the cafeteria and eat breakfast together.
Just wanted to say you look fantastic in this, also thanks for doing this topic bc it's soooo important.
Heres the solution: electronic busses theyd break down less and cost less to operate elon musk or GE needs to get on this
@@AvgJane19 Thank you! Let me know if there's another important topic you want to see too
That's about when my high school starts. I often wake up much earlier though (As early as 4 AM to catch up on my school work, or 6 AM to commute to school). Starting an hour later would mean an extra hour of sleep for me, and I can't personally attest to the differences that can make. Thank you for covering this issue. Great work!
I think some schools start shortly before 8:30 AM. My high school started at 8:25 AM 5 minutes earlier. I still think that's okay though.
She uses Pilot G-2 pens. She can remain as the host of BEME
ThatWasACoolTrick I feel VERY strongly about my pen choices.
G-2's are super overrated. Uni-Ball Signo DX for life.
Pablo Gratas ok while we’re on the subject my actual favorite pens are Pilot V5’s and fountain pens (specifically the Pilot metropolitan collection medium nib). Am I a nerd? Yes.
@@pablogratas941 drop it and it's dead
lol just use a bic ffs.
I’m a high school student in Michigan, and literally all of my friends stay up past midnight every night, and we almost all wake up between 5 and 6 am.
Have you consired going to bed eairlier?
Annadog40 have you considered having homework, stress, test, and essays from 6+ classes?
@@osevhh5432 I have had that yes. I would do the minimum effort required, procrastinated and sacrificed fun rather than sleep. Though when I did sacrifice sleep, I would get up early rather than stay up late.
I hated mornings since my preschool-12th & early community college years. I grew up staying up late, playing video games & partying. Luckily I work graveyard shift. I hate the sun & rush hour traffic even though the pandemic did make my commute much faster.
My high school started at 7:20 and it was absolutely BRUTAL. I am fortunate that my mother could drive me to school, but the bus picked up at 6:00 am. That would mean getting up at 5:00 am to be ready. I lived in a suburban and not rural area too.
Chris Joondeph that’s pretty common! It’s amazing how much that happens across the country.
@@noraneus9054 Hey you're the person from the video! Thanks for the comment. I'm a huge fan of both you and Lou!
Chris Joondeph yes! It’s me! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. It’s cool to hear people’s personal experiences
My school has that schedule and I feel like shit after just 1 day.
Ive hated getting up early my whole life, im 36, especially in high school, but damn, it used to be so fun to get into trouble during the afternoon or exercise or just have fun in general.
My class starts at 6:45, I have to wake up at 5:00 am everyday. I rarely get 7 hours of sleep during the school week
Tameem Iqbal how tf does your school stars at 6:45
Carved Parachute I have a first period and for some reason my school district starts the first class super early. We have 5 minutes to get to class from the first bell, so it technically doesn’t until 6:50am
Tameem Iqbal that’s still super early lol
I go to school at 8:30 and I get maybe 7 hours
Tameem Iqbal Whoever came up with that schedule needs to be fired.
It so weird seeing this debate cause my high school starts at 9:30, if I rush, I can get out of bed at 9 and make it to school on time.
Lucky
I used to go to a school that started at 7:20, and I still go to bed at the same time. regardless of whether I’m getting up at 4:30 or 9:00, I’m still gonna go to sleep at like 1 am
lucky
What the I’m waking up at 4 every morning just to make it to my bus on time it comes at 5
its crazy that schools start as early as 7 and I complain about my school starting at 8:45
I completed my school years and started at 7:00 since pre-kinder and if it's a habit, it's easy imo
It's crazy you start at 8:45 lol
ashlee en 8:45 is actually the ideal. You should stop complaining, it can’t get better 😂
My elementary school used to start at 8:40. I used to complain about getting up at 8. Now, that's literal heaven for me
I used to be teased by my family that I had a self imposed bedtime of 9 PM all throughout high school. I always had Zero Period that started at 7 AM and I would have to wake up at 6 AM. I would get out of school early and do my homework then go back for track and field. After that I would go over to have an hour of martial arts. With discipline, it was a great experience.
Adrees Mukhtar One of my friends sleeps at 9 every day. He always gets 10 hours of sleep and is the least sleep deprived of all of us
@@Eric-qe6xz This led to me feeling under the impression that early school start times being mercifully defended by insisting that students are sent to bed at an earlier time on school nights as a way of giving them a sneak preview of what it's like to serve in the military when it's finally time for them to do so. This could be due to some of the curricular material that those students are assigned to learn from involving such experiences, with a notable example being this profanity-laced masterpiece:

wtf. im in australia and the earliest local school start is 8am, with most being 8:30-9am
You’re so lucky.
lmmlStudios same in Canada
Mines 9 oclock
Same here but I’m in California. I guess it depends on the area.
lmmlStudios get out, just go
i start 10 am every day which is amazing. you get more sleep and feel more energized since the sun is already up then
I am incredibly thankful for my private school that my classes begin at 8:30, and feel bad for my friends who have to arrive at 6:30 - 7:00.
Indonesian here, school starts at 6:30 and ends at 15:30. Where my Asian peeps at?
In summer I sleep when I want, makes me feel awake, in school I’d kill to get sleep
i don’t think i’ve gotten 8 hours of sleep on a weekday in 4 years
My high school started at 7:45 AM, but I had to get on the bus at approximately 6:50 AM. I was in a private school from 2nd-8th grade. All of the grades at that school started at 8:30 AM, but I usually had to get on the bus at approximately 7:45 AM. Unfortunately, that school only went to 8th grade, so my parents switched me back to our local public school for high school.
In Singapore, we start by 7:30am. It was brutal as co curriculum activity is required to boost our entry for further education and thus I would usually stay in school till 11pm. Travel back and sleep at 2am to wake up at 5:30am for school again. My traveling time was my homework time. That was 5 brutal years that messed up my body clock till this day.
I just walked to school since primary. Ahh European life.
I think the editing is at major fault in this video. The background track is just techy noise. There are so many points where the background audio could have helped the narration. This just feels rushed
The research and explaining was really good and subject interesting. But the production... Background, effects, transitions, animations felt really cheap
Schools in Australia all start at 9:00 and even we are saying it should start later. Couldn't imagine starting pre 8am
Damn, I wish they did this when I was in school
My school started at 07:10.
It was BRUTAL
New Zealand student, school was 9:00am - 3:00pm, and 10:30am - 3:30pm on Thursdays.
masoncadepacker why is the time different on Thursdays ?
Our school day at my British public school was 9:00-15:30. I got my bus at 7:20 am. I remember reading about German schools that started school at 7:30 but had just one break and no lunch and would finish at 12:30 or something so had the rest of the day to do what they liked. I was always jealous of that because I had to go swim right when I finished school and got home at 20:00 with 2 hour before bed to do my homework so I could get 6 hours 30 mins sleep since I’d pass right out when my head hit the pillow.
The caveat is that I woke up at 4:30 most days of the week and swan from 5:15-7:30 and the same but PM after school for a total of 27 hours a week of training including gym time and land training as well as the pool time.
I felt great because I was overflowing with endorphins that made me feel like I was on crack all day. After I got unwell at 14 years old for 4 months straight I had to stop swimming and with the total loss of endorphins; when I got well again I turned to drugs and for the last 10 years I’ve been struggling with various drug addictions. I don’t blame anyone but myself but yeah I hope they realise the consequences of cutting into sleep time’ of kids at that early age just so parents can harvest price from their children rather than taking them seriously when they say they are not enjoying it.
And the same for these kids getting up at 5 for school.
me used to wake up at 5am cus my school bus would pick us up at 6am. and school started at 640am phewwww i survived
Interesting topic and decent presentation. I prefer the chill style or Lou. This style feels too ‘newsie’ like CNN/Fox/MSNBC. A bit more lax style might be better.
Tomasz0216 YESSSS SAME HERE.
How far do these kids have to travel for school since they need so many school buses, i'm assuming that the school buses are only for those that live far away from school, like +10km, kindergarten or first graders and not every student.
School starting before 8 is inhumane imo.
That's what happens when you have a non-existent public transport system.
You forgot "hey I'm Lou, got a shave, and here's the thing"
> "Should school start later?"
School should not be compulsory neither controlled by the state.
The common theme I hear when there’s reluctance to improving public services, is raising taxes. And the reason this response is so popular is because politicians have gotten good at convincing us that when we pay taxes we don’t get anything out of it. Or that someone else will benefit and we won’t. “Us” was very popular over the weekend. I hope that the core theme - that we as Americans hurt one another when we think we’ve gotten successful - will resonate anytime a poll or politician tells us that if we want improved services it’ll raise taxes. Instead of saying No, say Yes. Yes, raise taxes. Raise them on the most wealthy. Raise them for those who can afford it. And stop making public service employees subsidize tax cuts for businesses and wealthy individuals, pitting our needs against theirs.
My school starts at 7:05 and we get out at around 1:50 everyday. My bus picks me up at 6:15 so i get up at 5:30. Yet, because of the extreme amount of homework , i get to sleep every night between 12-1. It’s not fun. If only it could start maybe even a half an hour later that would be amazing
When I went to high school, a technical high school, my first class started at 9 am. All my other friends who went to other schools started either at 7:50 or at 8 am.
I love this news-concept with Nora, the Rabbit Hole and the Background. This together with Lou Foglia and the sporadic documentaries where your reporters go outside makes BEME News one of my favourite news show!
We appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
My school has to wake up at 7:00 am
You know the problem, it is the fact that the teenagers go to bed so late, that is the problem, Humans evolved to go sleep when the sunset, and wake up early in the morning.
oali 24 nothing about that is true. Also, watch the video that you’re commenting on, teenagers’ circadian rhythm naturally moves to later. Also, people in pre-industrial Europe used to sleep in 2 parts, or “bi-modal sleeping.”
can we please talk about standardized test. they are so unnecessary and useless the teachers hate them, the students hate them, and colleges dont even look at them. they should teach us things that will help us became better adults like basic first aid and self defense. they used to have a drivers ed class but they got rid of it because apparently learning about factoring trinomials is more important than knowing the rules of the road. reading class is also a joke. why do I need to know how to analyze Shakespeare and how How to Kill a Mockingbird still important. it doesn't take 13 years to teach us how to read and write in English. if I could design the school system this is what I would do.
for the first 6 years and kindergarden is would be the basics; reading, writing, and, history, science, and English. after that in seventh and eighth grade it would be alg. 1+2, a foreign language class (where you must become fluent or semi fluent) electives of your choice and either sports or a self defense/first aid and health class, and some other classes (I cant think of any others im on a time crunch to write this). but then in 9-10 grade it is more of the same but with other courses like driving courses, how to do taxes, and basic social and living skills ie public speaking, public decency, and how to basically not be a douche. 11-12 grade would starting you out for collage by you selecting courses catered to what you might want to do in life. these would include medical programs, higher math like cal. and trig., and other classes related to what you want to major in. this was a brief summary of how I would change the school education system and I would probably change things here and there but I feel like teaching us things we dont want to learn or need to learn is a waste of our childhood. this would make school more interesting and more useful and kids would probably hate it less.
I work in video production currently but I never took a single class in high school that related to what I do now. I think some kind of art class is important it works a different part of your brain.
I start school at 7:20 and I love getting out at 2:20 I always hated getting out of middle school at 4 every day
I desire to be in Australia where children can run on grass and adults can sit to enjoy conversations. In Singapore, our pace is simply too fast and I can barely be a human here. :( We work for too long, study for too long. With our increased productivity now compared to a century ago, our full work is to be capped at 5. Keeping in mind of education and food sector, so that they then can
I like the new host but the format....mehhhhh green screen cnn-esque thing aint it.
My school starts at 9:15. I don’t mind waking up later, but by the time I get home, it’s around 4:30, so I rarely have any time to do anything in the afternoon besides homework.
I’ll take a 8 start time mine starts at 7
This morning I had a conversation with my dispatch at work, I told him our city and nearby cities should get fully electric busses for the school system. It would save a bunch of money on maintenance and fuel. But also they could raise the time the busses get decomissioned. Since electric vehicles should last longer. Also the bus company should design a bus with "easy" battery switching capabilities. The money that could potentially be saved is a lot. Which could be used for the extra busses to get everyone in school on time and hire drivers for those routes. Wouldn't hurt for the city to invest in a big parking lot with solar panels that would charge the busses up. I think that's a viable solution, especially the way technology is evolving. ALSO no C02 emisions at school!
Someone tell me some negatives from this.
This Baffles me as in the uk is mostly start 9am
I don't like this format that look like normal TV news
I never started school before 08:45 in Australia or New Zealand, and still felt like it was a great injustice haha
Btw, this presentation feel from Beme is.. unfavourable.
In college my class starts at 7 am :)
Why do schools in America have school buses anyway? In Australia there aren't school buses for the majority (90%+) of schools. If school buses cost so much just get rid of them. Highschoolers can walk or get a ride from parents. That's what everyone does here, not sure why it couldn't work there
I'm from South Africa
Our schools generally start before 8am and I don't know the justification. I can relate with this story. Our problems are compounded by the fact that we travel long distances in poor public transport or kids use overloaded private transport. The long distances are because resourced schools tend away from the majority because of apartheid spacial planning.
It's sad to see that we still have more problems after we solve our current problems in SA
Thank you for sharing this. The legacy of apartheid in South Africa touches so many facets of life still. Let's hope for some change.
My district just made the start time EARLIER. 7:10. Glad I'm a senior.
Halfway through and first thought. Both parents working is what drove start times sooner. So both parents could get to work by 8, they would drop off their kids. Schools don't like to be baby sitters till class. So just start class earlier. And home room became a thing. I'm sure there are other factors but I bet this was a big one.
I don’t understand why schools would choose to start school earlier so they could use the same buses to pick up kids. Couldn’t they just run the buses earlier and leave the school start time as it is?
Host was coool, the backdrop wasn't my type. The normal beme setup is always great
I live in Australia, and just about every school I know of starts at 9am. I usually get up at 7:30am, be at school by 8:30am, have first bell to go to my locker at 8:50 and be in class by 9. Though we don't (or at least the public schools) have school buses, we just either take the normal bus, bike, walk or our parents driving
My highschool started at 8:25am, unfortunately, my parents had to drive an hour to work and they never could give me a ride. Rain, heavy snow, sweltering heat, everything that could occur to the weather did - and I had to walk between half an hour to forty five minutes to school.
My conclusions in my personal opinion is that after student turn 16 and have shown to be responsible and mature enough should be able to chose their own schedules between 8:00am-10pm as a way to have schools be able to spread their students out and offer students to take courses based on when they personally perform best.
Key here is GET TO BED early. Get off phone. I like 8:30 for kids. Feel terrible when I hear bus 6:30 am in winter pick up neighbors. Wah. Set my timer for "Christmas lights" on that side of house for them kids. I hope it helps them.
This video was great!
I like this new host!
here in indonesia my school starts at 6.30 am and ends at 3.30 pm
My school is now starting later next year and it's really frustrating because suddenly I'll not get home until it is dark out!
@Moira Cooper I guess but I just would like to have freetime at night not have to wake up early
In Indonesia many school start earlier - teachers need to arrive at 6.30am and students at 7am. It doesn't finish until 2.30pm or so - too much!
I live in philadelphia and since there’s public transportation (Septa) we won’t really need yellow school busses.
Same
my school starts at 7:15
0630 wake up, go to school
1600 get home & take a nap
1900 wake up from nap, do hw etc
2300 watch adult swim & browse myspace
0200 go to bed
rinse and repeat for 4 years, glad its over
Where’s Lou
My school starts every day at 8.30 but today i started at 10am
Have all of the grades start at the same time, so that they can all have the same bus runs.
My school had a late arrival every wednesday of every week. This allowed students to show up 1 hour later, or use the extra time in the morning to finish homework/have club meetings.
So the problem is transportation?
In Germany, students travel to school on scheduled public train and bus routes. In most cases, these services operate at times to suit school hours and are not run during weekends and holiday periods, though the services are open to use by non-school-related travellers. Local authorities subsidise the routes but parents or guardians are required to pay a contribution to the cost of a season ticket for use of the services. Many scholars use their own bicycles to travel to school and may take these with them when a part of the journey is by train.
Its also going to increase traffic jam in the morning.
My school starts at 7:30 and ends at 1:10 and 12:35 on Fridays
Why is it so short?
Subscriber idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's different here in Malaysia
My school started at 8: 30 but I get on the bus at 6: 30 in the last kid to go on the bus at 7: 40
my school started at 8:45 UK
My school starts at 7:00am
Mine start at 4:00 at India
Our school starts at 8:07 which isnt too bad, but it still sucks 😬
Theres an argument over 616k? On a state level thats a joke of a sum for such a huge positive change.
mastermclovin that figure was actually for the district itself, which has a much smaller transportation budget!
I have to wake up 6:45 because my school start up at 7:45 then I have to walk up the stairs to the second floor I’m being half-asleep to some boring class I don’t care about that sleep through .That’s only the first out of nine periods and I have tennis after school .
this looks too corporate and is not what people come to beme news for. Don't be discouraged by slow channel growth within the first few years, you will make it bigger for sure! Play the long game and stick to your roots and the relateable vibes.
I used to start school at 8:30 now it starts at 7:30
My school in Edinburgh Scotland started at 08:30. Then it would finish at 15:30 Monday to Thursday and 12:30 on Friday. We’d get an hour for lunch and 30 minutes just for a break.
Dam, the uk education system is much better
I woke up at 5:45 am what am i living 😫
I would prefer shorter days with more days of school
I worked at a summer school, and we started an hour later just because we could and it helped.
get rid of this BG already
What if they made high school more like college, such that the student is responsible for keeping track of credits they need, and responsible for enrolling in the correct classes? The schools could offer classes at different times, much like a community college, or university. This could possibly accommodate people with different scheduling needs, and also prepare high school kids for the college paradigm.
haha my school starts at 8:45
yes
Bring back Lou and the messy room!!
I don't have problems with new hosts, but I don't like the new video style and fake-ish professional look. If I want something "professional", I'll look Anderson Cooper and Cuomo's Primetime on CNN...
The reason I watch Beme is because I want something different than mainstream Media, something that feels more close to me.
(BTW, by professional fake-ish, I don't mean fake news, I mean trying to look too much like a real news host)
Bru, just go to bed early, go to school early and end school early. most people waste time at 12pm anyways. And it gets you prepared for work, its just harder.
8am to 12pm would be the best
Where is lou? I prefer the more laid back approach. This feels too much like TV.
Beme is struggling
I live 2 hours away from my high school. Imagine my life with a 4 hour commute every day.
I don't like this new format. It lacks the relatability that people like Lou or PhillyD have. It looks like taken directly from traditional media, something like traditional news.
It did not hook me like Lou or PhillyD do, I could not watch more than 2mins of it. Also, I liked the older intros.
Won’t the kids just go to be later ? Am I missing something?
Where is Lou ??!!?
