It wasn't explained in the anime, but Maomao has been selling the "teaching material" to Gyoukyouou, Lihua, and the emperor. The emperor really enjoys looking at the various sexual poses in the books.
Don't forget that one of the first things we see The Strategist talk about is how tantalizing the scowl from a women's face can be. Meaning that he was able to see her face.
Not sure if they mentioned it in their patreon video or not(wont pay for it), Lakan basically staged the whole blue rose saga for some specific reasons. 1st is mainly to divert some attention from Lady Loulan and her father who planned for her daughter to enter the rear palace as to increase his influence in the court. This ties in to the 2nd reason for this, when Jinshi brought the blue roses, not only did it steal some of the spotlight away from the father daughter team, it also sent a warning to the other people in the banquet that Jinshi should not be messed with. The blue rose as they quoted are basically impossible to obtain but jinshi got some and presented it to the emperor which says he can do the impossible.
Lakan has a real life condition which i think it is called prosopagnasia or something close to which or simply called face blindness.
Also in the final scene he saw maomao but he also jinshi and gaoshun who are marked as different pieces. For jinshi specifically the piece equivalent to western chess is "Queen"
Prosopagnosia, yes. To be specific, it doesn't technically specifically have to be facial blindness, that's just what most human default to using that sector of the brain generally as a holistic engine of sorts. You can actually train it as a sort of CPU for other purposes as well, even if it will cost you some fidelity when it comes to shit like recognizing facial features etc vividly. There was that 1 famous chess grandmaster who trained his gyrus fusiformis to recognize chess board patterns. He could instantly pick the most optimal move, just as how your avg person can instantly recognize someone whose face they have seen before because the default resource allocation for the gyrus fusiformis is facial recognition etc for most people. Incidentally there's been some brain scans done for bird watcher nerds etc, and when they are shown random bird images, their gyrus fusiformis lights up just like when you show some random person a bunch of faces at random, because both of these activate the same region. Incidentally this is also how many people recognize a car brand instantly upon seeing it, basically a lower level process on the side in addition to the facial recognition using their gyrus fusiformis resources.
So Lakan is essentially running on modded software so to speak, using other secondary means of recognizing people, such as voice, arms, stance etc a bunch of low-level secondary factors besides the face rly

Making the provocation fail was one side of the coin, twisting the knife with the manicures was the other.
"Blue Roses" are a fiction in the first place, so tasking Jinshi with "restoring" them to the palace, out of season no less, was supposed to be an impossible task.
Of course Maomao wanted to stick it to daddy.
The true nature of Blue Roses is probably why the name is used in other media for "things impossible to have"
