    I'd love to see a BT keyboard dock to the host foldable with four pogo pins. The keyboard could recharge and run as a USB keyboard, then.
    It seems like such an easy fix. I wonder why Asus and Lenovo haven't done it.

    • @CampGareth
      @CampGareth Рік тому +14

      I've found pogo pins to be unreliable if there's any movement between the two pieces, at least that's the case on my old Dell Venue 11 Pro. Whenever the tablet portion wobbled Windows would switch into tablet then laptop mode on a loop. At least with Bluetooth you expect problems.

    • @teh_hunterer

      @@CampGareth I suppose it depends on how it's implemented. The Magic Keyboard on the iPad Pro doesn't have any of those issues.

    • @CampGareth
      @CampGareth Рік тому +2

      @@teh_hunterer indeed, Surfaces seem to have solved it by letting the bit between the keyboard and pogo pins flex instead. Apple do something similar, big magnets to hold the ipad in place then a couple of hinges to dampen vibration from keystrokes. So long as the pogo pins never move in use they're fine. How you'd do that on the zenbook or thinkpad I don't know, keys you hammer on are right above the bezel where the pins would go...

    The 10" form factor with "tucked-in" keyboard is the ideal for a folding notebook in my eyes. The size of this is like dragging around a thick coffee table book, not to mention how clunky everything about this is like the keyboard implementation.
    That's to say nothing about the alpha-test experience that Windows delivers.
    Lenovo's external keyboard and stand are just a bit ridiculous. I can't see any world where I'd carry a stack of peripherals like that over an ultrabook and a thin external monitor.
    I look back at the old Lenovo Yoga Book and how impossibility thin it was and its 10-inch form factor. If they could figure out the hinge with a folding OLED, *that* would be my ideal ultra-portable.

    It is maddening that one of the least polished parts of this folding-display equipped laptop appears to not be the hinge or the screens top layer, not even the crease, but simply the keyboard. Is creating a properly functioning Bluetooth keyboard and ideally adapting more aspects of the Surface Type Cover (which I maintain is excellent considering its form factor and managed to include a backlight half a decade ago) that much more challenging than designing everything needed to accommodate a folding display? Then again, the latter can be explained by development times and having to trim something down to get to market in a timely manner, though on the other hand, the price still makes any compromise hard to swallow.
    One can hope that this is truly a pre-production issue, though considering the Thinkpad and the fact that other reviewers also reported similar issues, plus the fact that Bluetooth keyboards are not exactly unknown technology, make me doubtful, for this generation. Considering Asus though, yeah, it stands to reason that they will indeed refine this concept, they have a nack for actually sticking to out there concepts till they actually work.
    Software also still seems to suffer from the cancelation of Andromeda. I get the reasons why Microsoft did that and I understand that their financials did benefit from the added focus on Azure over that project, but I still am saddened thinking what could have been with those changes, having potential for foldables, regular tablets, phones like the Duo and more exotic projects like the HoloLens.
    Basically, still as amazing a concept as when Lenovo launched their first foldable screen equipped laptop, but as long as the basics aren't sorted out, even the most affluent buyer will struggle to justify the purchase. The new X1 looks incredible, hoping for a review.

    Personally, I think having the design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 phone is what laptop computers need. You have a smaller screen on the front of the device (in this case, a 12" screen) for a tablet, but if you open it up, it'll have the laptop form factor or remove the keyboard for the larger screen (in this case, 17").
    But then again, that would be too much screen for that size, and the cost would be astronomical.

      I feel like that would make the laptops so thick or low power as to be unusable,

      The issue with adding another screen is battery life. The computer would die within a few hours if you used both modes. Plus it'd be easy to damage the big outer screen and a case for it would make the device way too thick.

      Makes me wonder what ever happened to that prototype screen thing where buttons/keys/etc could actually rise out due to the material used. Last time I saw it was when the Nintendo Switch was still just the "NX" and that football shaped "leak" using that kind of screen was the one everyone thought it would be.

    Asus should really consider dropping their estimated price to match or even undercut Lenovo's

    Very interested in how this could be as a drawing tablet. It's like having a portable 17in cintiq or kamvas but able to be folded down for all your normal laptop needs.

      Wouldn't the crease be a problem when drawing?

    • @C.Wilson
      @C.Wilson Рік тому +1

      @@Geekosification because of the larger area I'd say no and using the z fold 4 for drawing and it's crease isn't the best but it doesn't stop you from being able to draw.

    How do you justify its $3,500 price on such a device. The iPad Pro 12.9 with M1 chip technology is only $1100. Is is because foldable are a lot more expensive to make or its new so we can charge more for it? Thanks Great video and information regarding the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED

    Now these size foldable pc makes sense. As they are more usable range. I’m sure the ASUS is incredible to see in person. What type of cpu is it? The ultra low or more powerful cpu?

    I'd actually be down to try the X1 Fold, especially since it now has the TrackPoint. The Asus, OTOH, doesn't have the horsepower I'd need to justify something that big.

    I suppose there's an argument that foldable displays aren't good for phones due to the wear and tear, but it makes absolute sense for PCs. Can't wait for these machines to get down to the $1500 sweet spot for mass adoption.

    These keyboard issues are I think common to Windows. I have a Laptop with detachable screen and I face the same issue such as mouse being not detected.
