    thank you for the tutorial. can I use canvas sheets? Will it be too heavy? I want to make a large wall fan.

    • @UnitedArtAndEd
      @UnitedArtAndEd  7 років тому +2

      Hi Nina, the reed we used in the project would not be strong enough to support the canvas sheets. However, lots of oriental fans are created with bamboo as the supporting structure, so that might be an option for you.

    what can you use if you don't have multi media paper or the metallic paint?

    • @UnitedArtAndEd
      @UnitedArtAndEd  4 роки тому

      You could make a fan with any paper, really; it just won't be as sturdy as one with "sizing" on it. If you're not using a multi-media or watercolor paper that's treated for wet media, you should stick with dry media such as colored pencils for your artwork. Metallic paint is just a suggestion; use whatever color combinations you'd like.

    it's very beautiful, a question where do you got these thin sticks ? 😙😙

    • @UnitedArtAndEd
      @UnitedArtAndEd  7 років тому +2

      It's a flat reed, more commonly used in basketry. We cut strips from this 350-ft. long roll: www.unitednow.com/product/6054/flat-reed.aspx

    What will happen if I only trace 14 triangles

    • @UnitedArtAndEd
      @UnitedArtAndEd  7 років тому +4

      You can do less than 15, to make a smaller fan, but you should always keep it an odd number, so you can glue the last piece of reed to the end. So, 13 triangles would be fine, with just 7 pieces of reed.

    What if you wanted to print something off line using cardstock paper would that be too thick?

    • @UnitedArtAndEd
      @UnitedArtAndEd  6 років тому

      Cardstock would most likely be too thick. You need to be able to fold and crease the paper. If you're not decorating with wet media, you can just use plain printer paper instead of the multi-media paper we used. But if you do switch to 8-1/2 x 11" paper, instead of the 9x12", be sure to decrease the size of your triangle template so it will fit 15 times across the page.

    Does the measurement of the triangle change if the sticks are shorter? I have 6 inch sticks

    • @UnitedArtAndEd
      @UnitedArtAndEd  6 років тому

      You could either shorten your triangle by an inch (recommended), or else just glue the sticks so that they are 1" from the top of the fan. You don't want to take the length off the bottom of the fan, or it won't open as nicely.

    This is for kids right ?

    • @UnitedArtAndEd
      @UnitedArtAndEd  6 років тому

      Hi Morgan,
      You are correct, this project is for students, though adults can make them as well! The difficulty level is moderate to advanced, so it would probably be best for grades 6 and up. It can be done with younger children if the instructor does some of the more challenging steps, like creating the fan shape, etc.
