  • Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins are joined by the most controversial culture critic in the world, Charles Holmes. They discuss what is speculated to be the animated film of the summer, ‘Inside Out 2.’ They then pick a Pixar film that best matches each president depicted on Mt. Rushmore.

Don't do meet and greet with Elmo it's a giant tmnt2 version of Elmo that does nothing but terrify. Don't introduce your kids to characters that are slowly suffocating in their costumes. It's hard to catch a terrified two year old in a crowd.

Didn't care for Ren Faire, especially when compared to Lance's first documentary. I felt like the first episode wrote checks the rest of the series didn't cash. Although the hidden audio of the firing of a certain employee almost makes the three hour enterprise worth it.

I can stand the take that Pixar makes animated films that adults can actually get something out of is a bad thing. I'd rather have that then something like Illumination which is the poster child for kid drags their parent to the movie and they are tortured for 1.5-2 Hours. Movies that are ok for kids to see but can also be legit great films that stand toe to toe with some of the most thought provoking stuff out there are welcome to me.

The way sean talks about his daughters choices its worth noting that (I think, time is weird) she isn't 4 yet.
I have a seven year old boy and say what you will of dances with wolves but of his own volution he sat through and appreciated the movie when he was five. Of his own choice, not push-prompted. And im kids content I would have said he was very discerning up until 6, but he wasn't really aware of the option of ordering anything that wasnt on rhe menu.
At seven he views ninjago as the pinnacle of all media. Everything has to be action or ghosts and he flees the room when feelings come up if there isn't a battle at the same time.
Tonight we are watching mary poppins 2 simply because he still likes mary poppins and we're trying to peel him back. I am very excited about it. Also, I hate mary poppins 2.
Maybe it's easier to create an agreed on walled comtent garden of content with girls (not to be gender normy but there are far fewer girls who need their protagonists to be holding a weapon at all times, and the stuff they're into seems not to require a decade of catching up.
But I guess it's normal. And throwaway kids movies aren't always bad. Not everything has to be Totoro.
We're seeing inside out 2 this weekend. Our last two theatre movies have been ghistbusters FE and indiana jones. Really hope he's into it.

@@commaJim If being insufferable is “controversial” in 2024…I think you need to pass the message along to society.
They euphemistically refer to him as “The most controversial”…because people, almost universally, dislike him.
They don’t dislike him because he says “controversial” things…it’s because his personality is sophomoric and cringe inducing. He’s the kind of guy that will make you second guess yourself if your opinions align with his, because he’s obviously not that bright.
In the end, everything can be described as “controversial” in the context of disagreement…well, everything except the fact that Charles is an absolute cringemeister.😂

We're in our forties, this will never make sense to us. We watched Ninja Scroll once, got a kick out of it, but we weren't reared by Japan like you lot! And living in this day and age, we don't really need to add more stuff to our media consumption that infantilizes us. Especially when we can't turn on a movie or television show these days that doesn't rip straight from our childhood!
But hey, we had Ninja Turtles, Star Wars and Transformers and you guys have whatever the hell Japanese word you just said. Who is to say which is more worthwhile? I have no doubt one day we'll be watching Hakiyu reboots as your generation comes into their own as showrunners and directors. And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Re: Roosevelt, “despite being a member of the Republican Party…” Tell me, what party was Lincoln in? This far back any baggage you have with party affiliation today isn’t going to fit. Same with your characterization of Roosevelt as “progressive” vis a vis the progressive party - it doesn’t mean he was a bodies and spaces liberal type. Woodrow Wilson was a major leader in the Progressive Movement and he was insanely racist even by the standards of his time.
I’m surprised you have such a high opinion of T. Roosevelt given the tenor of every other political comment you make on the show. Roosevelt was:
    - a fancy lad rich kid
    - a police commissioner
    - a self-aware imperialist
    - someone who thought war was a fun adventure, basically an excuse to dress up with your friends and larp as a cowboy
He very much did usher in the modern America in the sense of self consciously extending American military and colonial/adminstrative power as far around the world as possible. Both as VP and as president. He didn’t fight in Spain, he fought the Spanish for control of Cuba (he is largely responsible for starting the Spanish American War as VP), leading to America’s de jure dominion over Cuba until Castro’s revolution. Think of how integral the anti colonial movement is to the dynamics of the Cold War, to global capitalism, etc. He set it in motion with America in the driver’s seat. Given everything else you say about politics (decrying copaganda, making fun of MAGA) I’d think you would also have a more critical assessment of Roosevelt’s legacy but I guess not. Possibly bc you don’t know as much as you think (ex: saying he was a solider fighting in Spain). But please say again how stupid school is.
