Umbrellas are handy for bathroom breaks, if someone is coming you can gain some privacy with an open umbrella held in front.. If you are injured and unable to move, an umbrella will provide shade, a wind break and capture water to drink ( upside down)it can be used closed to strap onto an injured leg with tape to give support. Many café tables are situated in full sun, an umbrella gives you some shade. An afternoon siesta on the trail, with shade anywhere. Opening an umbrella quickly can deter an aggressive dog or use it closed as a stick. You can spread an item of wet clothing on top, use pegs or safety pins to anchor, items will dry fast as you walk. Blocking light from a window , or room, or another pilgrim while sleeping. ( I dont like strangers watching me sleep)
I am 69 and planning to do the walk from France, I have a friend that is in very early dementia and she would like this to be her last memory of our friendship I think as it looks either early spring or fall will be our time, I don't want the summer will be to much for us we are northerners from New England
I have the same Euroschirm umbrella, and the key is the long handle which gives it another point of attachment on your hip belt. I have tried a couple of other lighter weight umbrellas, but they have not been as stable, and one (very expensive) umbrella broke at the first gust of wind. My telescope umbrella has blown inside out, but I've always been able to put it back easily.
If not, I would certainly buy one in Le Puy! as I walked late April into May and we had some crazy hot days. I imagine August is going to be even hotter! The umbrella makes a huge difference
Ohh, I was wondering if they attached. I kept thinking they seemed like a pain to hold so thought I wouldn’t get one. Wow though, they attach. I didn’t see the brand you got… ???
EuroSCHIRM Telescope Handsfree Trekking Umbrella, 43” wide, Includes Pack Mounting Hardware, 50+ UVP (Silver) It is perfect and attaches easily Looks like you are prepping for a camino!
Thanks Sandy…very informative and, for me, quite timely. I’m currently researching hiking umbrellas as wife & I will be walking the VdlP in Apr-Jun next year. I’m seeing umbrellas as an essential piece of kit. One question for you. Did you still take separate wet weather gear? Thanks again..and now off to find your first umbrella video 👍
Hi Kevin - yes I brought separate rain gear...having walked Francis and Portugal (and the West Highland Way) and we got dumped on bad and we were cold. So I bought a Gortex Jacket and Pants , that being said I didn't have an umbrella back then, but it rained hard and often. I bought Arcteryx but there are lots of brands - some people love ponchos but I don't. Gortex comes in various levels of rain protection i.e. the more expensive the longer it will protect you. Also make sure you can slip the rain pants on and off with your boots on - better ones have a zipper to facilitate this. I also did a video on my rain gear! Buen Chemin Kevin
I knew I needed an umbrella and have been wondering which of the many to order. Are you satisfied that this one is sturdy enough even being telescopic?
Very sturdy (German made) very, very happy with it and will never walk without one again (us red-heads do not do well in the sun - just ask my dermatologist)

I am doing carry on. Assume you can’t carry on an umbrella… is it easily found to purchase? We are starting in Ponferrada…
Hi, do You know the 2024 version of the umbrella? I am looking to purchase one, and I see so many options, I want to buy one that is like yours,
www.euroschirm.com/en/. I bought the "hands free" model - search their website and I'm sure you will find it. Buen Camino!!

@@seniorswalkingthecamino Thanks. In my cart.
Umbrellas are anti-social, you can easily threaten someone's eye with one.
