What Makes This Singer Great? DIMASH
Dimash definitely raises the bar for greatness and at 25 years old, he is just getting started!
Coming from a close-knit, musical family, Dimash started performing at the ripe age of 2. He learned to play the piano in addition to singing, and his parents and music teacher observed he had absolute pitch.
At 6 years old, he won a national piano contest and his background as an instrumentalist has clearly elevated his singing.
Dimash is known for mind-blowing range and has been classically trained in Bel canto. As I share what stands out to me about Dimash, I'll also look at some of the dynamics of his training and what distinguishes it from a more contemporary approach.
We'll be looking at a couple of his performances which really demonstrate the level of professionalism and command he has in his onstage presence.
I hope you all enjoy the video and I want to know, what do you think makes Dimash great, so please share with me in the comments section!

Dimash is from Kazakhstan! I love his look, he looks like he’s half European, half Asian. He’s very handsome, very tall, very young, and very talented. I didn’t even know he could play any instruments. He’s got a lot going for him! The people of Kazakhstan must be so proud of him, he single handedly put his own country on the map. 🇰🇿

He is friendly, approachable, down to earth, respectful, kind to elderly and children. He could but would never deliberately show off on stage by 'singing' down his singing partner/partners on stage. One of the kindest thing he did was singing to raise funds to purchase a pair of prosthetic arms for a ten year old boy who lost both his arms because he was electrocuted. Recently he contributed five tonnes of foodstuffs to the people from his hometown due to hardships from Covid-19 pandemic. Besides these, he has sang for free and has even donated many times to various charities since he was a teenager. He is simply candy for our ears, eyes and soul.

Thank you Ken for your review about what makes Dimash great. His voice is unique, incredible, heavenly & incomparable. He is 26 years old & music is his passion & his life. He plays at least 7 instruments & has studied music all his life obtaining his BA Degree in classical & contemporary music & recently received his Master’s Degree in composition & has been accepted for Doctoral studies. He sounds great even singing without music he’s so good. He can hold a note for 23-24 seconds which is probably contributed to his swimming & holding his breath under water for long periods at a time. He plays soccer & had taken up taequando at some point as a teenager according to him. He dances & has done choreographic dancing in his conerts to sold out audiences. He comes from a very loving, supportive & beautiful family including his grandparents which he has opened up to the world. His mother is a soprano & his parents are well known & beloved singers in Kazakhstan. Dimash is highly intelligent, genius level. He sang his way through school at parties, weddings, concerts & won many competitions but reached superstardom status after The Singer 2017 competition in China where he wowed all the professional singers & millions of people immediately after he sang his first song SOS. All his songs are magnificent in many languages including English which has improved a lot & I love his accent. Btw, his sold out concert at the Barclays Center in New York was out of this world great. He gives his all & loves & appreciates all his fans which he calls his Dears. Very humble, kind, respectful & polite well-bred young man with a wonderful personality & very down to earth. He is the total package in his over 6’3” frame & great good looks. He loves his country & wants everyone to go visit it. From what I have seen & read it is very beautiful & the people are very friendly & hospitable. It is on my list of countries to see. Thanks again Ken for your great videos & your reactions to Dimash. Hope you find time to see his couple of latest songs. 😍❤️🥰🇨🇦

Yes, you’re right, the concert in London was amazing, as well as all the other Dimash’s solo concerts. And what really struck everyone was when we learned from the interview that before the concert Dimash couldn’t even speak, because he caught a cold and had a high body temperature, because the climate was not suitable for him, the increased humidity and this had such consequences ... However, what did we see at the concert ??? We saw a brilliant Dimash on the stage, which enthralled the whole audience !!! This is a high level of professionalism !!! Thanks, Ken! Your series on great singers would be incomplete without Dimash. One of the things that makes Dimash a special vocalist is his artistic and intellectual curiosity. He will never stop challenging himself to develop and learn, and we get to watch as he synthesizes new influences, some quite unexpected. He was scheduled to perform at the Toyko Jazz Festival next month, which was a surprise to many. What would Dimash perform at a prestigious international jazz festival headlined by Herbie Hancock? He would have performed as a vocalist for the ensemble of jazz fellows from the UCLA Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, where he was to have entered a mentorship program this past month as part of his master’s degree in composition. (I hope his Los Angeles plans are only a temporary delay, because I agree with you that he would hugely benefit from an immersion experience in English vowel sounds, dipthongs, etc.) Recently, we can hear Dimash experimenting with a lot of newly improvised, jazz-influenced vocalizations on some of his songs in concert (Know, Love of Tired Swans, and even Autumn Strong in Kiev for example). He does a pretty great jazz riff at the end of his recent “We Are One” tribute to front line healthcare workers too. There’s still a lot he can learn about jazz vocals, but we get to hear his learning process, because, as he says, he trusts his audience. His father says that Dimash is also studying R&B now, while Dimash has said his primary interest in pursuing his doctorate is his desire to compose a classical sonata! So who knows what we could hear from Dimash in the future? Maybe something unprecedented, which might well be his artistic goal. In the meantime, I feel privileged to hear what is, for me, already the best vocal instrument I’ve ever heard. 🧡🧡

He is absolutely fantastic in his vocals of course, but also the way he connects with his audience is something that comes naturally! That’s why people all over the world attend his concerts. One of the things I have noticed about him is he has a particular gesture he uses when there is an instrumental section that he uses to focus attention on the musicians. So many singers wander around or try to dance or something, assuming they need to entertain the audience. Dimash takes the hand not holding the mike and holds it straight out toward the musicians with his hand clenched like he is holding on to a rope that is connecting him to the band. He then will simply hold this pose the entire time. It's very dramatic, but it pulls all focus to the band and really makes you focus on what they are playing. Because he is so focused on just listening to them, so are we. It demonstrates such a grace of character. Really impresses me.

Ken I love your break downs of his performances... my question to you is ... Has Dimash influenced you ideas on singing and how you teach ? - Josh from Sydney. When he does sing in English his pronunciation isn’t perfect... saw a performance recently where he clearly is extending his lower register.. the 20+ years of vocal training is evident in the dynamics he applies... vibrato when not belting is phenomenal! What I believe is particularly awsome about Dimash is that when he reaches his very high notes, he still sound like a man, and that man is Dimash and not someone he is trying to imitate. I've never confused his voice for a woman voice when he reaches Soprano, even with my eyes closed. There is something consistent about his inconsistency, multiple styles, very wide range, voice timber, air control... it's his voice DNA. It's genuine and authentic.
I also appreciate the way he performs. He is completly engaged in every song he sings, look like he wrote the song, he understands every word he is saying, even though it might be in a complete foreign language for him. You can feel the emotion from the first word through to the last.
And finally, I love the attention he gives to every note he sings at any level or octave. Therefore, when he sings low notes like in "Love like a dream", I would have been very very satisfied if the whole song was in low notes Bass, Baritone and Tenor. He wouldn't have to go to tenor operatic, then angelic, then mix, then his F#6, Mezzo-Soprano and Soprano, etc. I'm confortable with his voice at any area he decides to settle. It sounds always good. He has a unique timber with a great technique. (and by the way, I hate when some people just wait for his high notes fireworks, maybe because I love foreplay too much :) but his build up for every song is phenomenal)
And that last point is the reason why I can't stand some singers who 1. just imitate 2. not genuine 3. don't tell a story through their song, 4. jump from one style to another without proper transition (sounds weird) 5. don't respect the song chronology in time and in build up 6. Can't transform a cover to make it their own. That why I can't stand the guy who cover the Prayer jumping from man to women without context neither transition, it sounds weird. It sounds like the guy is missing one whole octave between his low notes and high notes.
My request for the nexts: Chris Stapleton , Joe Cocker, Angelina Jordan
Many thanks Ken for your excellent videos, Keep the great work .

Dimash is the most fabulous singer on earth, IMHO. Many people can sing, sing well and be great artists yet still they lack that special something you can't quite put your finger on. I suspect it's unselfish love. We can only give what we possess and he has it all. His depth of character is beyond reproach. He is capable of and repeatedly able to bring his audience to the heights of heaven and back. He leads you into love as only a compassionate, sensitive, experienced man can do. It's my opinion, that without even trying, he is a perfect world ambassador for peace. Truth, integrity and love are not often found these days. Dimash is perfection.

Thank you for your great analysis. There are several things that make him a great singer. Beside his incredible voice, there is his bodylanguage and his facial expressions telling the story of the song. And please have a closer look at his hands and his arms, they often reflect what he is doing with his voice. But in my humble opinion the most important thing what makes him a great singer is that he feels every song with his heart and soul and he is able to convey all these emotions with his voice. (In several interviews i heard that he never would sing a song he doesn´t like or he can´t feel and that he is very picky and stubborn about how a song must be arranged) Furthermore he is a "free" artist not stuck to the sheets of music so he changes the interpretations of songs as he is pleased to - for example the song SOS, there are slightly different interpretations at each concert. Not to forget to mention that he is able to connect with his audience in a way i´ve never seen at any other artist. Dimash has the full package of what is needed to be a great singer.

The hours I spend listening to his music and researching this young man is almost embarrassing. But I can’t help the fact that when I listen to him sing, I’m emotionally touched. And during Covid-19, he has brought so much joy to my heart and ears! He does seem to be a pretty great person as well which is such an enormous bonus. Ken, you chose a win-win theme, because Dimash's fans can talk about it endlessly! This includes musical education, technical aspects of his singing (possession of various techniques, styles), physical (long vocal cords, large lung volume, growth), spiritual and moral qualities, as well as his great talent and, most importantly, hard work. It all came together in one person, and it's all the best, and it's all in harmony. It is very important for me that Dimash is very respectful to people. That he gives his all on stage. That he is very responsible about what he does. That he is not afraid to go against other people's opinions, but trusts his gut. You can tell more about his voice than anyone else. The only thing I would like to note is his "aerial" singing. This is a large volume of air that he is able to pass through his vocal apparatus, due to the large volume of his lungs, which creates additional surround sound, additional color in his voice and clarity of sound.

Thanks. To add to your comment, Dimash has an incredible ability to tell a story. Did you react to his version of the russian song translated to Love is Like a Dream? Dimash is also able to blend so many different colours of his voice into the same song without it sounds weird. Do check out the awesome soundtrack Across Endless Dimensions!
I am so pleased you learned about his great personality. So many young artist today who are more interested of boosting their egos but Dimash is very humble and wise and wants to serve his country and being able to "look his audience in the eyes the day he steps down from stage" as he puts it.
Yes the first song was in Kazak, a turkish language. He do struggle with the english even if he has improved a lot since 2017. Not so bad on vowels but typical soft "front" sounds as th and w (as most of us swedes do as well). On the other hand we are able to pronounce the harsh rolling Rs and the ch-sound in Juan or José you english-speakers replace with an H. Anyway, Dimash was about to study in the US (he is taking his masters in composing, wanted to study in L.A.) this spring. Hope he will be able to do so later and if so please try to meet him! Blessings from Sweden.

He has somehow been able to maintain that extremely High vocal range, too.. Dimash uses a completely different style and he is incredibly humble!!

Dimash has an incredible preparation in classical music, he is an opera singer by his education. And like all classical singers, he can play the piano. His parents are renowned singers. His teachers studied in the USSR, they learned from the best Soviet opera singers. Soviet Union had a very strong classical sisnging training system valued in Italy and France. Also the country has financial resources to invite teachers from Europe to his uni, so he may have learned from Italian teachers. And thanks to remembering their culture, his grandma taught him to play that traditional instrument, it's called dombra, and she gave him a very deep knowledge of his native language.
In fact, Kazakhstan is a very rich country (both in mineral and recreational resources), whose people like to study and work for result. Yes, in America and Europe people know a little about it, but In Eurasia Kazakhstan is a very reputable state, and its Russia's neighbour. Many Russians have relatives there (sent in USSR times to develop the country).
In the USSR they already had their own universities, big production plants, powerful agriculture. In fact, all republics had all that, but many couldn't retain. Yes, first teachers, doctors, engineers were Russian, but locals studied and worked like hell, and beginning from 1960s they entered best Soviet unis in all spheres and then brought their expertise to their republic, making it thrive. And they studied their language and culture, too, like all peoples of the Union. All these facts - education, character, mineral resources - allowed Kazakhstan to cope after the collapse of the USSR and develop as a European country. Just look at their capital Astana (now Nur-Sultan), and you'll see the level of income. People don't leave the country to find a better life in Russia (only ethnic Russians). It concerns musicians, too.
Unfortunately in other republics they also have plenty of mineral and recreational resources, but they didn't want to develop that much, and now they are facing instability. People from Kyrgystan or Tajikistan come to Russia in big numbers to find a job, sometimes they become criminals. That's all very worrying. But Kazakhstan is a reliable neighbour, it's a brand, and thanks to their wise business approach to development Dimash can feel OK in his country.

When you listen to Dimash, you are left with the feeling that he is moving on a glass that will burst at any moment, but he always manages to keep it whole. His voice dances on the notes, as if on thin ice. With surgical precision he touches every single tone. He steps on the edge of the sound, as if walking on the edge of a sword. He causes goosebumps to every one who listens his voice. He shoots adrenaline to the max and on the very final, he gently caresses the soul in a smooth motion and brings it back to full peace. He is a magician. Only Dimash is capable to shoot you into space through his voice alone. That's what I say vocal roller coaster. He is Michael Schumacher in music.

I just heard Dimash hit D8 in whistle tone during "Unforgettable Day" at the GAKKU concert. This man is so full of surprises! He's also got a wonderful stage presence and has become a rather good dancer during his pop/dance numbers. I heard him say he was working with a South Korean producer who had worked with EXO, among other Kpop artists, and it makes perfect sense. I see him gaining enormous popularity being marketed almost like in the Kpop industry to younger fans, as well as in the neo-Classical genre to an entirely different demographic. Dimash is a veritable "Whitman's Sampler" of music--he's got something for everybody, no matter your taste! :D

I love that you used the term "vocal athleticism". I've actually decided to call him the "Grandmaster of Vocal Acrobatics"!!! #DEAR4DIMASH4LIFE

Dimash is indeed a professional and phenomenal singer. He's sooooo amazing!!! For me he has outdone other singers all over the world. His long long years of training prove it. He perfectly knows his stuff; he's a genius.
I really don't know how I came across him. I was just scrolling and trying to listen to other singers I know then I happened to listen to him and I was right away impressed and carried away. Oh my God...what a beautiful magnetic charming voice!!!Good looking, unique beautiful angelic voice, well-bred, humble, reserved, from a good family, intelligent...What more can he ask for? He has almot everything....Thank you Dimash for coming to planet earth😊😊😊❤❤❤👏👏👏🙋🙋🙋...Praying for more success and don't forget to keep your feet on the ground. Be a blessing to others too👍👍👍.
