- Another delve into Harry's Garage. evo's Editorial Director and Founder Harry Metcalfe shows us around his 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint, he takes it for spin and explains why this 40 year old sports car is still very "evo" Follow us on twitter @evomagazine @harrym_evo
This just goes to show, you dont need fancy music, camera effects or graphics to deliver a great review. Just a man (who knows what he's talking about), a camera and an interesting car. As with all Harry's stuff, rather than just quoting stats, facts and figures, he focuses on the interesting details which makes a car special and a little bit of history around the subject matter. Nice one Harry.
It's so tiny I was utterly surprised by the noise it makes when starded ! Brilliant little car, this !
Harry is the Hue Heffner of the car world. You live the lifestyle Harry and we love you for it
Harry all I can say Is God bless you mate, the Fist time I got into an Elan in the 60s (I was a delivery driver) I just could Not believe ANY car on earth could handle this good, it was the shock of my life touch the throttle Instant push from the seat turn the steering its instantly turning, n on country twisting lanes Nothing on earth could live with it as for fun driving was on a different planet everybody was raving about the E type well for me the E type was nothing next to the Elan, n to think according to the S African guy who designed the workmate they did build the original with Just £20,000 there is No words left to say Colin Chapman was the genius Engineer of the Whole 20th century for me, may he rest In Peace, Lotus even won the same GPs in 10 years on their glory years as Ferrari did in their entire history till that time
I love how it's so pure: lightweight, carbureted, front-engine, rear-drive, 4-speed, no electronic aids, just hands, feet, ears and seat of pants. Wind in your hair. Awesome.
Ooooo I want one. Oooooooo I've got one. Best car ever. You just grin when your behind the wheel.
What a fantastic video. I always lusted after this model. Today, only the mx5 gets remotely near this baby. Thanks for a great upload.
I just love Harrys' enthusiasm and love for classic and unusual sporting cars. Something I share and has been a life long passion of mine. I wish I could find a career to use it though. Great little vids Harry. Regards. DC.
one of my favourite all-time cars
Even an old Lada would look and sound awesome and you would want one after Harry reviews it. He has the ability to make you feel intimate with the car, unlike anyone else i have seen. Fantastic stuff
Brilliant stuff! Your enthusiasm is as infectious as ever Harry.
"Add lightness" as the great man said!
This video captures the way I feel when I drive my 1967 Elan S3 DHC. It is pure and so connected.
To me this was one of the best EVO diaries... so far :)! Keep them coming Mr. Harry
Thanks Harry. Beautiful car, Chapman was a genius.
Next door neighbor when I was a kid took me for a ride once in his 80s Lotus Esprit, was amazing. Still haven't felt a ride like it since.
I love these videos. This is one of the best from Harry. No stupid music drowning out the car sounds either!
I love to drive this beauty in Gran Turismo 4!!
Keep the videos coming Harry!
Pure and honest enthusiasm is more enjoyable than a big budget TV production.
I fell in love with this car through the Forza games. I'd love to have one for real.
love it how he can't help but smurk as he drives that thing, you can tell he genuinely loves it.
That's what am exhaust is meant to sound like, love the idle
colin chapman was englands enzo ferrari
What a fun little Lotus! Light weight and nimble.
I can't believe that Maserati wheel comparison! Imagine how much extra rubber & metal is used globally to feed this insatiable desire for ever bigger wheels & tyres over the years. On most cars it's just ruins the dynamics, but most people are far more concerned with how it looks. Keep up the good work Harry.
Great video Harry! These evo diaries are top notch - more please :)
YES YES YES .... new episode of EVO Diaries !!
Pause .... Like ... Full screen ... Play
To me, this video is better than a season of Top Gears! Just can't get enough! Thanks Harry.
Dad owned one in the early 70’s, spoke so highly of it. Just goes to show that unlike what most car manufacturers would have you believe, a car can be very exciting without having a million bhp.
Finally it takes Harry to reassure that there is no better gear change than in the Elan: that is so true IMO - I had a Ferrari which was really disappointing in comparison. Would never sell the Elan...
Great video once again and how appropriate given the recent follies surrounding Lotus.
Making a car lighter is the only single thing you can do to a car that improves EVERY performance aspect all a once. It makes it faster everwhere. But it's more than just weight. The engineering to make it light is remarkable, but the engine, gearbox, brakes, weight distribution, and perhaps most importantly, chassis/suspension are all utterly superb.
Harry's love of cars comes through with every video I watch, especially this Elan. Great video, again and again.
Harry, Chris Harris and you are the only people on planet that can make every video special and interesting... I truly enjoy them... :)
i never would have thought that little elan would be so quick!!! awesome vid...
I'm very happy to have descover your channel.
Harry is just awesome, and his car collection, just amazing.
you really know good cars, every car i have seen from your garage is something i hope to own as well
That engine note is superb!
Love Harry's videos.
So much passion in these, best car videos on UA-cam without question.
Sounds amazing!
Such a nice sound for a small engine
Love the induction noise... fantastic.
I love how much passion you have for cars
You wait all day for a bus, and then two comes along. Nice one harry.
Damn it Harry, I want an Elan now!
Incredible little car! Never realised it was quicker than the contemporary E Type! Great video, more like this please!
Great video Harry!!! the best car segment show on the net! Thank you!!
These videos are just amazing and spectacular!! Thanks so much for sharing, this is what car guys are all about!
With no doubt, the absolute best car reviews on the entire planet earth. Thanks a lot.
Well done Harry, your affection for that car is clear to see. Even more than the 330 Ferrari (which was also a good video). Goes to show that expensive isn't always best. Building it yourself adds to the fondness no doubt. Well done.
Anthony
Super car! Thanks for making these lovely videos.
Saw one this morning in red. The guy was going for it on my favourite road I smiled & gave the thumbs up 👍
Best car clips out there. Thank you Harry.
A quick car even by todays standards. But regardless of speed this car is so full of character, it could have a 1.1 and I wouldn't care.
Harry's video brilliant as always. Love watching him present.
Another excellent review Harry, by far the best car shorts on UA-cam.
Harry, thank you for these videos.
this guy is very fortunate to have the dough to buy and drive the machines he loves...
JEALOUS!
Makes me happy to think I have an S1 Elise in the garage.
I absolutely love these videos. Can't wait for the Countach diary.
harry knows his stuff,top bloke
Another superb video, thanks Harry + EVO :-D
You missed your calling, you are genuinely quite funny. My T shirt will now read "Mechanic Overlord" on the back and "Genius Hipster" on the front. Thanks very much for some good laughs.
It sounds bloody brilliant.
Saw one on Wheeler Dealers once, fell in love. Glad to see it on Evo!
Yes, Edd China upgraded the "donut" drive to CV joints.
It is funny you brought up issue 59 because I was reading the same issue last night. My previous car got nicked and looking for an MR2. Great issue, great diaries' video.
to each his own. I appreciate both cars
Harry this series is amazing, keep it up,show all your cars.
couldnt help, but to admire the Lamborghini countach in the garage! :)
Love the Countach in the garage.
Cars like this are what make driving.. better!
For present day cars, it is quite related to the Honda S2000
sounds so pure
great little car
Wow, always admired the elan, but had no idea how good it really is!
Not a douche! Jealousy is a terrible thing. Keep at it Harry, fantastic work
Harry Metcalfe - The joy of driving.
thank you for posting this video. I guess we'll never see anything like the Elan again Sprint again. Too bad for us.
Unbelivable car, just brilliant. Utter great review. I just had an incredible desire to drive that car too, even by here it feels like an ultimate driving experience.
Amazing job, congratulations!
Harry needs to give tours of his garage. Nice Lambo in the background.
sounds fantastic
This car was designed by perhaps the most talented and successful performance auto engineering team ever. Seven F1 GP champsionships, innumberable other wins in innumerable other classes around world, revolutionized performance car design and give us the architecture for the top class formula and sport racers today.
Great video!
Great, now I want an Elan Sprint.
LOVE the gearchange.2 inches click-clack.I wish i was Harry Metcalfe......
A nice way to celebrate the ELAN
Can't wait for the next one.
Yet another brilliant vid harry - Thanks! My daily web surfs always include a random check for any Harry reviews................ Keep 'um coming please!
I love these, Harry
looks like a fun drive in a fun car! i think driving the maserati on that road would be frightening because its so large. but in this, its a nimble fly!
It just sounds so good! what a shame there is no modern affordable 4-pot roadster that sounds this good.
I love it! Exactly why I have a Midas Gold Convertible. 720kg, 90 bhp and a very good suspension and chassis. Similar in character but a lot cheaper to buy and run (we can't all be rich).
Even compared to his Zonda, Ferrari and Lambo, THIS is the coolest car he owns! Why can't manufacturers make stuff like the Elan today.
Gotta love the Countach in the garage the at 3:45!!
good heal-toe there at the end Harry!
Brilliant little car:)
After seeing this I realy want to drive that thing! Looks likes so much fun!
So much respect for this car its brilliant. Lotus never made another purest's car until the lotus Elise of 1995. Like this Lotus Elan, the Elise was a groundbreaker in innovation, with its bonded aluminium chassis and its featherweight Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) brakes - made from special silicon carbide aluminium. I would love a blast in either though.
I was waiting for so long for the new video and finally got it.
Evo please don't use youtube's stabilization, it's better to see handshaking image then logo shaking and "dizzy" surrounding.
Well, thanks a lot Harry. Now I want one!!!
That's the magic of weight. Love it. Great vid.
Great video. Everything about this car reminds me so much of my Miata.
