Modern steam power plants are usually operated not only with single but with double steam reheating. Steam reheating used in steam power plants as a means for raising the thermal efficiency of the plant, is similar to the two-stage heat addition in gas-turbine plants
The purpose of a reheating cycle is to remove the moisture carried by the steam at the final stages of the expansion process. In this variation, two turbines work in series. The first accepts vapor from the boiler at high pressure.
The objective of using reheating is to avoid excess moisture which is carried by the steam at final stages of expansion process in a turbine. The blades of the turbine erode due to excessive moisture.The efficiency of steam turbine can be improved by decreasing condenser pressure,increasing boiler pressure or by using the reheat cycle and regenerative cycle[1].In a reheat cycle, the vapour is expanded in multiple stages in different turbines.After the first stage of expansion, the vapour is at the super-heated state(state 1 in the fig) or dry saturated state (To avoid excess moisture). After every stage of expansion, the vapour is sent to the boiler where it is reheated, followed by expansion in the turbine of next stage and is finally condensed in a condenser.[2]
By increasing the number of reheats, still higher boiler pressure could be used, but the mechanical stresses increase at a higher proportion than the increase in pressure because of the prevailing higher temperature. So in a reheat cycle, the maximum number of reheats permitted is only two.
We use two types of turbines here :
High-pressure turbine(HPT)
