Thanks for reviewing the progress of the core, this is exciting to see, I never owned a CD-I but a friend of mine had one back in the day, so I have some memories of certain games.
I actually had a cd-i when I was a kid. My uncle handed it down to me as he didn't want it. I remember Striker (soccer game), Lords of the Rising Sun, which I did not understand at all. Voyeur, that I shouldn't have been playing and Tetris that even my mum and dad would fight over. I don't remember ever buying anything for it and not sure what happened to it in the end.
I got the chance to help beta test LTFOE in 1992-1993, and then I reviewed it for CD-i World magazine. I enjoyed it. As I said in 1993 "Link is better suited for play with a joystick controller!" [with the Gravis style controller pic in the inset]. It's gotten trashed for so long, but if you take away the Zelda license and time travel back to 1993, you might just have an "OK" time. 😁
I always loved the fact that Animation Magic basically went and animated the scenes straight ahead for those Zelda games. No storyboarding nor breakdowns. Possibly no planning whatsoever. Its just one frame to the next, by the seat of their pants, balls to the wall. Was it techinically good? No. Is it amazing? Yes .
The game show games on CD-I (Jeopardy, Jokers Wild, Jokers Wild Jr. and Name That Tune) are decent ones, mainly because it's hard to screw up a game show game since the rules are already established. Plus you get digital Alex Trebek and Wink Martindale.
The gameplay is running too fast indeed. This is still developing at a great pace though. A turbo mode might actually make some games better, haha! If you're interested in comparing with gameplay from actual hardware, hit me up. I'd be happy to record some specific gameplay for you. Have well over 700 original discs for the system (though copies work fine too). Will still be interesting to see how far this will go and if it will finally make CD-i available to those who don't actually have a CD-i. Though emulation works fine enough for the usual suspects, the better games do require that DVC that's not well supported at all yet via emulation unfortunately. Really hope it'll be possible on the MiSTer!
@@zeldajunkielol2 I do. I was lucky enough to get the DE10-Nano before its price went nuts. It has quickly become one of my preferred ways to play retro games.
I hope this gets a Pocket port someday. I always wanted to own a portable Sony CD-i unit. I nearly bought one from eBay in 1998, but the deal fell through. With prices so high on them now, this may be my only chance to have a portable CD-i.
Would love to see this core finished with MPEG support. Would loce to play Lost Eden on thus thing. As far as cores go, i want a complete 3DO core so bad but from what i read 3DO isn't possible on the Mister
We have all sorts of cores ready. CDi, 3do, apple pippin. Just ready. Who knows if it's even currect. Was bored one time. Just got people dl from different locations to one drive.
I think the ultimate benchmark for the CD-i core would be Atlantis: The Last Resort. It’s a terrible game, but it’s absolutely wild that someone went through the effort to get a first person shooter running on a machine that can’t do hardware sprites.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Games or dumps? Personally if you remember the CDI is not a games machine, it's compact disc interactive. It's like ENcarta only a few years before, that's all it was meant to do. THe fact there's some games thrown in is just a bonus! :)
These new obscure but big console cores are coming to the MiSTer far faster than the software emulator, ares, ever will get. Also much slower development for MAME. What's the point in waiting around for open source software emulation to achieve the same degree of accuracy and compatibility? It's inevitable. Within four years, the MiSTer will have complete cores of almost all of the major consoles up to N64's level. Eg. The Jaguar and 3DO.
It’s good to have both FPGA solutions and software emulation. Software never goes extinct. One day these boards won’t exist and we can only hope the cores get ported
Yes. There is a new good closed-source Jaguar emulator called BigPEmu. But there's not one good open-source yet. Perhaps some old ones existed. Interestingly, the old VirtualJaguar core was added into BizHawk v 2.9 last year.

It’s been fun to cover so far!
Were any of the cdi games you played fun?
Tetris
This is why video game preservation is so great. We don’t just preserve the good games, we preserve all the games.
Exactly. So 20 years from now when someone wants to experience CD-I they can
I love CD-I Tetris. It’s very music heavy, so audio is a must. Lots of other bizarre games, always finding out about something new.
Tetris is one of the big draws for sure
Mah boy! This core is what all true retro gamers strive for.
It’s fun just to have it and experience it. I love going over the dev process in videos and showing how the cores come together

It’s not a good game but it is an intriguing game and that’s good adjacent haha
PC-FX, 3DO and Jag update? Yes please.
Hopefully one day
Got to love that MS paint looking animation those CD-I guys did back in the day
It’s definitely become an iconic look for the best and worst reasons.
i had a CD-i back in the day and i've been waiting for this core for a while now!
Glad people are excited :)
It's Christmas in September!
CD-I under the tree

It’s so bad it’s good lol
I can't figure out how to get the core to work in 60hz and it won't work on my CRT :(
Some games just end up in PAL 50
They were on the right lines. Playing a video game that was like a cartoon or anime was a dream of many players at the time.
Good concept, iffy execution
Burn cycle was a fun game on the CDi.
One of the better ones for sure

What system didn’t have Jeopardy. It was on everything
CD-i can't believe we're doing part 2! (This is going to be a running gag!)
Haha I’ll keep making them if people keep watching them
Hopefully enough episodes to get to the inevitable "CD-i can't believe it's not butter!" gag. 🤞

"Playable" seems like a stretch with CDi
You’d never know if it was accurate lol
And I never will!
Also a timeline where we get this before Third Strike is a terrible timeline

I wouldn’t have chosen it

@@HalfBlindGamer Me too! It's so much more convenient than pulling everything out of storage and hooking it up when I want to play something.
GREAT! I'LL GRAB MY STUFF!
Time to start testing
There's gonna be a CD-i core before there's any Virtual Boy core. What a world
I am very surprised by that
Awesome, I'll be torturing my friends with the CD-I soon!
Imagine having friends 😂😢
I wonder when the game I worked on will work. It's Creature Shock.
So far no dice but it’ll get tested as soon as it works :)

Its phenomenal to be able to have a CD i core even if it's currently un WIP state. Apart from this I'd really like to see a PGM core
Absolutely PGM. So many good games
yes! a PCFX core would be awesome, then an Atari Jaguar/Jag CD core!
We need Pc-FX
You should test Moses the exodus!
Haha I’ll add it to the list. First person shooter? 🤣
What happened to the mprtal kombat arcade core ? I bought a digital mister just for that lol
Doesn’t sound like it’ll be coming to MiSTer
Cps3 core it's what I want the most sir
We all do for sure
Fun times!
And unexpected ones
They should call this core "Chocolate Teapot" 😂
