Magnus Carlsen faces his World Championship challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi and ex-challenger Fabiano Caruana in the FTX Crypto Cup, the 6th event on the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and the 3rd and final Major. The 3-day preliminary stage sees the 16 players play each other once before the bottom 8 are eliminated while the top 8 advance to a knockout. The prize fund is $320,000, including a $100,000 Bitcoin bonus. The winner also qualifies to September's Tour Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves, with a 10-second increment per move from move 1. The knockout match-ups are held over two days, with a 4-game match each day. If the match score is 1:1, the tie is decided in a blitz playoff. Two 5+3 blitz games are played followed, if needed, by an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. Official website: championschesstour.com

"We all know Carlsen's biggest mistake in not winning this game . It was of course in the position when he could have played b4 he played C3 . he angered the chess gods and it doesn't matter if you are +10, +100 or +1000 , there is no winning it . You always have to play the Evans gambit , that's the way chess works ." - Agadmator 2021.

I love how often the Evan’s gambit is an innuendo
No bro listen you have to understand without that gambit chess wouldn’t exist so it’s something that must be played if you want a chance at winning given the opportunity I’m done I don’t wanna hear it they most decent move of chess is pawn to b4 that’s it and that’s final

ua-cam.com/video/G_zEeaqr3mQ/v-deo.html
I explored the position at 8:44 with my board at home. I found a line I think the people here will appreciate. Starts with a fun, crazy sac
1. Nxe5! Sacrificing the queen. Black takes with ... Bxe2
Then the royal fork! 2. Nf7+! Kg8 3. Nxd8 Rxc2
Now the last explosive move of the combination: Ne7+, threatening a smothered knight pair mate. Black is forced to part with the dark squared bishop, and after 6. dxe7, his rook looks very sad trapped behind that pawn on the dark square. This position is sharp but drawish, however I just want to appreciate this combination. Sacrificing a knight and opening up a skewer on the queen and rook, then forking the king and queen, then the smothered mate threat, and ultimately the extremely cramped rook at the end of the line. Caissa showed me this path and I wanted to share it
Being early to Agad's video is the YT equivalent of getting to play the Evans' Gambit
Captures captures😂

17:00 that was excellent Antonio
Last time I was this early Fabiano was still the favourite to win the candidates.
Aaaaah
I Dont see why, he had a very bad year leading up to the tournament. I thought it was going to be MVL or Nepomniatchi but Anish Really surprised me by playing some damn good chess.

FUN FACT, as some of you might not have watched the livestream:
During the show in-between games they show mini clips of the players where they ask them questions.
They asked Magnus to name the players that fit the keywords: Genius, Entertaining, Finesse, Annoying.
This was his choice:
Genius: Nepomniachtchi
Entertaining: Carlsen
Finesse: Giri
Annoying: Nakamura
Then he later on explained that he chose Nakamura as the "Annoying" one because he is always finding defensive resources in every position, and it becomes very 'annoying' to attack against Nakamura for his resilience.
Great game by Hikaru because Magnus was really gunning for him
This needs one of those "YOU HAVE ANGERED THE GODS" text messages that Noita has in it

Yea and don't forget the checkmate on g7, because the bishop now covers it
At 13:30 « the knight of course can’t capture because Queen captures queen », that’s not the best way to finish the game ahah, since after Nxd5, the dark squared Bishop’s diagonal is open, and he controls g7, so that Qxg7 would be checkmate 🤩

16:56 Agadmator our supreme leader ❤️ always tells us the beauty of chess
i don't know why but there is something extremely appealing about having two rooks on the d and e files. it's like there're meant to be there, together.
13:14 - Bishop takes knight, pawn takes rook, c7 knight to e8 forcing either rook to take, in which case queen takes, or black plays pawn h6, in which case queen takes knight with check. King moves to h7, Knight takes on f6 for check, queen takes rook. Definitely winning

Always an existing one...year, except when Magnus and his Bong Cloud mate Hikaru play the Bong Cloud! lmao!
Wait, you made a 18 minute video and had it uploaded within 23 mins of the game finishing?
at 13:30, can the knight also not capture because of Checkmate on G7? Queen and Bishop both attack the square. Wanted to see if I was missing something
At 9:00 wouldnt knight c7 be strong too? Feel like it would guarantee trading knight for rook or am i missing something
12:16 "so you have to go for this queen trade" - No, you don't. Black has just moved Qf5-g6 but white can go Rc8 x Rg8 check, so Black's only reply is Ktf6 x Rg8 and White makes the move Qf7 x Ktd7 because black's knight is left with no defender. The resulting material balance is that White has Q R B Kt and Black has Q B Kt, so White is a whole rook up!
Even Hiakru lieteratly cares that Magnus didn't play the Evans Gambit.
Thank you for showing this game the opening was epic. Magnus and Hikaru can't get much better than match up

Nah. He loves Nakamura.
5:12 why not Bxe4, followed by Bxe4 and Nc5? That knight on the edge is terribly placed and this should be the best way to activate it. Sure I think white would still be better but it woulda helped yo
I have yet to win a game with the evans gambit. I need to watch Agad's video on it again because it always makes for an interesting game but I don't understand all the theory just yet.
13:30

0:36 what is going on with the Iran flag from Alireza ?
8:49 why didn't magnoose play knight c7 to trap the rook at e8?
Agadmator is faster than light.
2:45 could someone explain why hikaru couldn't have captured with bishop instead of queen, it looks like he would have been up material if he did
Same reason.. Pawn on e5 falls
06:00 Does it have to be that way tho ?
I mean why can't black play Bxc3 with an attack on the Queen
after Qxc3 Black simply moves the rook and all is well
I mean you said it many times I thought that would be the only line possible
ua-cam.com/video/G_zEeaqr3mQ/v-deo.html
12:35 is knight g4 for hikaru a good move? Looks like it wins back the rook? And double attack on rook and bishop? Looks like a winning move but I am not very good at chess so Someone good at chess reply please.
I noticed this move too. It shouldn't be winning imo. Magnus will have to capture on g4 as the only move. Then if Hikaru captures the Rook with Qd3, Magnus will capture pawn with Be5 and threatens checkmate. Hikaru then will have to bring his Queen back to g6 to force a queen trade, then after Qg6, Ng6 trade, Magnus will be up 1 pawn and still have the passed d6 pawn. All in all I think Hikaru was losing at this position but at least he could've given his king some room to breathe but my calculation could be wrong Idk.
Amazing game! But does nc7 at 8:49 trap the rook?? That also would have been awesome, but still I'm a 1000 so better keep playing...
Everytime the Evans Gambit doesn't occur it insults my namesake.
this game felt like they're throwing rocks at each other
An improvement suggestion: if the clock data is available for the actual game, it may be helpful to display it as well.
I'm a bad 800/900 player. I barely know any opening after 2 moves, but months of watching this channel and I can spot an Evan's Gambit in a fraction of a second...
The Evans gambit is always the way to go in the world of chess and if you don't, you make the chess gods angry.
Try to say that 10 times fast @15:10: "but now Magnus no longer has double ROOKS on the d-file." This guy has poetic flow lol.
ua-cam.com/video/G_zEeaqr3mQ/v-deo.html
I saw night Ke7 to attack the rook, and it had only one square, Re6, and now the bishop would folk both rooks with Bishop Be3
13:28 , if Nxd5 isn’t it mate?
FIDE should get a new rule to stop draws for only Magnus & Hikaru matches
ua-cam.com/video/G_zEeaqr3mQ/v-deo.html
can't you play Qh8 Kh2 Qe4 check to exchange queens and win in that position at 16:39?
ua-cam.com/video/G_zEeaqr3mQ/v-deo.html
Why not Qc4 at 16:09?
Anyone wana tell me why at 2:43 would you capture D3 with the queen and not the bishop?
Well agadmator...you and myself share the same birthday...😁16th of June...
at 15:20 can magnus play rxe2?
12:40 why not Ng4???
It's a draw because Magnus didn't play the Evan's gambit
ua-cam.com/video/G_zEeaqr3mQ/v-deo.html
16:35 white to move: Re8, Kh7, Qe4 and white wins
Actually Agad missed the point of the move at 9:37 Magnus trapped Hikaru's rook. If you analyze the position there is no way to save the rook after Qc4
It can just go back?
Magnus and Hikaru share a tremendous respect for each other - you can see it in all of their games against one another.
Instead of 32.Ne7, what do you think of Nc7, when the R on e8 has nowhere to go?
Thought the same. Engine didn’t like it though because of QC7. Now if you move the knight the bishop is hanging. If the rook takes it then attacks the queen. Just a little trickier to play but you’re still up an exchange and winning
