The Puritan Age in English literature refers to the period from the 16th century to the mid-17th century, characterized by the rise of Puritanism, a religious movement that sought to purify the Church of England from what they saw as its Catholic influences. This period was also marked by political and social turmoil, including the English Civil War and the establishment of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell.
Puritanism had a profound influence on English literature during this time, as writers grappled with issues of faith, morality, and the role of the individual in society. Puritan literature emphasized plainness and simplicity, eschewing elaborate language and ornate style in favor of direct, clear expression. The Puritans also believed in the importance of individual conscience and the need for a personal relationship with God, which is reflected in the themes of many literary works of the period.
John Milton is perhaps the most well-known writer of the Puritan Age, and his epic poem "Paradise Lost" is considered one of the greatest works of English literature. Other notable writers of the period include John Bunyan, author of "The Pilgrim's Progress," and Andrew Marvell, who wrote poetry that often explored religious and political themes.
Overall, the Puritan Age in English literature was a time of deep religious and political upheaval, but it also produced some of the most enduring works in the English language.
