Hello! Have you made a video about your life story? I’d love to hear your reasons for choosing psychiatry. I’d also love to hear about your primary inspirations and motivations which pushed you towards becoming a psychiatrist.

psychiatrists use to be evil people when I were a young boy. They'd use people to experiment on and do research on people. FACT.
I wouldn't trust a psychiatrist as far as I could throw one.

Hi! I've been binge-watching your videos for the last two weeks and find them super interesting. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and am in therapy, and I am in college and strongly considering majoring in psychology to eventually become a therapist myself, so a lot of what you say is very applicable. Thanks for the awesome videos!

Hey Doc, what do you do when faced with a potentially suicidal patient who is a First Responder?
For example, they are in the ER for an OD or serious cut and they appear tired, depressed, confused or slow in their responses. However, they deny intentionally Over Dosing or purposefully cutting themselves and state they do not have suicidal ideation. When interviewed and asked the standard suicidal assessment questions, they give the correct answers to conclude they are either a low risk for suicide or none at all.
Based off the responses, his score doesn’t add up to being depressed and/or a risk for suicide, but you are not totally convinced. Can you still have them committed? If yes, how would you articulate that in a report?

Thank you for bringing up this issue. It may be a topic for another video. In general, in my opinion, it is important to respect one’s general clinical impression or gut feeling about a patient, after obtaining as much factual information as necessary. Peter Goertz

@@goertzpsychiatry9340 So if a person gives the proper responses to a suicidal assessment that concludes he or she is not at risk for suicide, you can have them committed based on your gut feeling? That’s a terrifying thought. I know your job is not easy and you want to protect people from themselves. I would think you’d have to release them based on their answers and if they did kill themselves, you’re protected from a lawsuit. However, if you have them committed and they weren’t suicidal, they would most likely lose their job and as a result, become depressed and suicidal. Darned if you do and sued if you don’t…what to do?

hey dr goertz just wanted to ask a quick question about shadowing. have you ever been shadowed by undergrad/ med school applicants. if so how exactly does this work for psychiatry? it almost seems like this would be a very difficult specialty to shadow.

I may have been shadowed briefly by a high school student many years ago in an ER. Generally shadowing in psychiatry seems doable, however each patient seen would need to consent to a shadower being present.

Hello, Dr. I studied business as my undergrad and I want to go to medical school here it's around 5+2 years of internship. I believe that I have symptoms of schizophrenia-like paranoia, anxiety, and weird religious thoughts and beliefs about demons and being possessed but I hear no voices and experience no visual hallucinations. My question is can someone with schizophrenia go through medical school successfully? and Dr. how can I deal with the stigma of being mentally ill?
    Thank you

Thank you for your open questions. It seems wise for you to talk in person to a psychiatrist, whom you trust, about these issues. Peter Goertz

Using 'they' 'them', not good for the individual, just think that many 'ideas' are way too generalized. Good content
