No, the press doesn't get a free pass - especially not our modern press. Aid workers are another trouble spot. What good does it do to drag the US government into a situation where someone who should not be released is exchanged due to your stupidity? Allowing large numbers of dual citizenships around the world simply exacerbates the issue. Read the CIA fact book, read the State Department guidelines, know the laws and conditions in the countries through which you will be travelling, and try following recommendations instead of thinking that what you are doing is so important that the US government should be ready to exchange a ruthless arms dealer or a terrorist to get you back.
