  • When I watched the classic "White Men Can't Jump" starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, I forgot how TRAGIC this movie was. With a remake on the way, it's time we dissect the heavier themes that make this Comedy Classic WAY deeper than you remember.

    This is one of my favorite movies. I've never actually sat and thought about it but everything you mentioned resonates. I guess, in many ways, it is tragic.
    I didn't think of Billy being a "good guy" so much as I was hoping he'd get his stuff together & realized what he had instead of thinking about what he didn't have.
    I really love this analysis. Well worth the wait. 🤩

    Great to see this post, just the other day I was double checking your feed to make sure I hadn't missed anything.
    I've always enjoyed this movie despite not wanting to in a strange way; I've always been a pretty risk averse person (sometimes to my own detrement ha), so for me the hustle plot was always a little nerve wracking. But it's nearly impossible to resist what are great performances from every actor involved, so any time I stumble across this movie I end up watching it.
    Your analysis of the characters, particularly Billy, was a very interesting perspective, particularly in regards to how media programs us to think certain ways about certain things, people and events (and I agree 100%). But what really struck me was your assumption about how the movie was setting up Billy's character as "the good guy", and why it seemed that way. The first time I saw this movie I was around 16 or 17, and those opening scenes of him struck me differently; they honestly kind of made me roll my eyes. Something bothered me about him, and though I may have seen him as harmless (and I honestly can't remember if that was an impression I had, it's been about 30 years), but I also saw him as sort of shiftless and annoying. I felt like I knew that guy (or rather, guys like him). I wonder if maybe my life as a white teenager (at that point) had just exposed me to a lot of (white) guys like Billy? At the time, he just seemed inherently untrustworthy, which as the film goes on, is more of an undependable quality rather than a trustworthy one? Sorry, I know this a long meandering point, but you have me thinking if my initial reaction to his character was perhaps influenced by my experiences and social circles?
    But I love the "are they gonna make it" approach to the characters... I think for the first time, I'm really thinking about life for these characters past the end of the movie. And I think your graph nailed it, as much as I hope it's a given that they all make it.
    Wonderdul video, there's a lot more I'm thinking on now, but my comment is probably long winded enough. Ha Thanks for the upload, always looking forward to the next!

    Awesome analysis! Side note I was super young when this movie came out and in love with basketball at the time. I remember seeing the poster and being like “oh damm I guess I’ll never be able to dunk” hahahaha

    Great video...I see what you're saying but I have a question. Why couldn't Billy just tell Gloria just how she was able to get on Jeopardy in the first place? Billy did owe Sidney, even though what Billy had to do was TOTALLY unfair...but in a way, Gloria owed Sidney too...Sidney was one of the worst "friends"ever but that's another story. Why did it have to be such a big secret to keep from her ESPECIALLY at that point? Gloria, without Sidney's help, you would still be by the phone waiting for Jeopardy to call!!: And Sidney saw what was happening...its not like he said, alright, I'll find another way...Listen to the woman my ass..smh...its just something that always bothered me about this movie...am I trippin?

    • @zsazsa4159
      @zsazsa4159 2 місяці тому +2

      In the movie we see Gloria studying, and always saying she’s going to make it to jeopardy, he didn’t want to look like she only got to jeopardy because HE pulled strings, he wanted her to think she made it herself, and he genuinely wanted her to get on there because it was important to her, it wasn’t about him looking like the hero.

    • @slick1006ify
      @slick1006ify 2 місяці тому +1

      @zsazsa4159 Ok..I understand that...we even see how Billy reacts when Gloria gives him the "I told you so" about Jeopardy calling but it was getting pretty crucial...IT was going there...Gloria was taking it there. Billy said that he promised Sidney and Gloria replies "You promised me!" THAT'S when you throw feelings out the window and tell her the truth. Gloria, Sidney came up with the idea so you could get on Jeopardy and I also gambled my car. And if that didn't jog any kind of realistic reaction from Billy, "You gamble my money and we're through" DEFINITELY would have. By then, it wouldn't have been about sparring Gloria's feelings...it would've been about making Gloria understand the situation and thereby probably saving their relationship

    White men can indeed jump and win some dunk contests and a top prospect (Cooper Flagg) who could be the number-one pick in the 2025 NBA Draft is white so white guys can jump and play good ball. 😁
