Make A Simple Arduino Energy Meter

  • This video guide shows you how to build your own energy meter for use around the home using an Arudino and a current transformer / CT. Since this meter only monitors the supply current, it works well for loads which operate close to unity power factor (purely resistive).
    It can easily be connected to a multi-plug to monitor a few devices or to your home's DB to monitor your entire home's consumption and calculate your monthly electrical bill.

    Small remark here: it's not measuring kWh, but VA (Volt-Ampere). For AC current, you cannot just multiply voltage and current to get it's power consumption. While this will work for resistive loads (pure heating loads), it will not work for capacitive or reactive loads. For your laptop charger, for example, it will not tell you the real power it consumes.
    Nevertheless, it's still a nice project :-)!

    If the voltage is set in the code, the power reading will be “right” only for a resistive load, if you don’t consider voltage variations caused by the grid and the voltage drop on the electrical wiring. In AC, you can’t just multiply voltage by current like in DC, it is much more complicated! You MUST consider the power factor of the load, dependant on the phase shift between voltage and current. Nowadays electrical loads are often inductive or capacitive (like in all electronic appliances, led bulbs and so on...). For measuring a generical load with a voltage that is floating and a power factor which is not 1 in most cases, a meter like this results heavily inaccurate and pretty useless. It can work only as an ammeter.

      Yes this is correct and is mentioned briefly in the description and discussed in more detail in the blog link.
      As for it being heavily inaccurate or useless, I would disagree. I completely agree that this type of meter is pretty useless for taking accurate or calibrated measurements at different sites or for different types of loads. The intention behind this meter was to make a simple household meter which would be installed on the mains and left there for months as a means of monitoring your energy consumption and monitoring your electrical bill estimate. Since most households run a fairly consistent living pattern, electricity usage is also fairly consistent from month to month. While this meter won't be accurate for vast changes in usage or if a large range of different appliances are used in a month, it can certainly be calibrated to be quite accurate after a month or two by comparing the usage displayed on the device to your actual electrical bill and calibrating it accordingly. Sure this is also not going to be 100% accurate but as a home meter to give you an idea of usage and your estimated bill, I consistently get readings of my household bill within a few cents of the actual bill using this meter.

      You're right, and this meter doesn't really show kilowatts (kW) or REAL power, but kilo-volt-amperes (kVA) or APPARENT power, but in case of the power factor (PF) being close to 1, these two are almost the same.
      The author must have most of his appliances running close to PF of 1, as his measurements are very close to the utility's, or the utility power meter is measuring kVAh instead of kWh.

    It's Great but you need to measure Voltage too, If you assume voltage to be 220v or 110v fixed, you're measurements are off by quite a bit.

    Thanks for upload and details information. I'm Abdul Basit from Bangladesh. I've a question. Amps reading changes 0.06. It does not changes like 0.01, 0.02, 0.03. Amps jumping every changes 0.06. Hope you replied about this reason.

      In order to make a bidirectional one, you’ll need to measure both the voltage and current in order to determine the net direction of power flow. This is not really a simple meter to build or to code.

    I'm a little bit confusing here, when you put your ct into a multi plug, what do we do next? whats the relation between the multiplug and the outlets? you didnt touch the outlet at all

      You’ll now be able to measure the power consumption on any devices plugged into the multi plug.

    If I where to use just the lcd screen rather than a Sheild and follow your tutorial on how to attach it to a uno bored, how would I saughter the wires to it?

      I presume you’re talking about the connection to the Arduino? You’ll need to solder a pin header strip onto your LCD leads and they’ll then plug into your Arduino

    Hi Michael, I'm using SCT-013 100 A version on my AC 247 volts (edited 247 in the code) with the same circuit and using an LCD shield, but 33Ω burden resistor but when I apply a load, the readings don't change from zero - they just remain zero whether the load is a 7Watt LED bulb or a 750 watt Iron.
    What could be wrong?

      There are a couple of things it could be. I'd suggest first displaying the raw values read from the analog pin and see if they change when you add the 750 watt iron (and make sure that the iron's thermostat is closed/on). Using a 100A CT on 247V means your effective range is almost 25kW, so its unlikely to give good readings for your relatively low loads you're trying to measure. You are only using half of the analog input range (512), so each measurement step (your resolution) is around 50W. So your meter will only display in increments of 50W.

      @@MichaelKlements i guess you should use low rated CT 20 to 30 amperes is max current drawn in typical home on full load cause 100 amp ct = 220*100= 22000 va and i don't think any home consume this much power or 100 amps in home ( if yes then cables sizing of wireing must be 25 to 35 sq mm Copper)

      Yes you can, breadboard's just tend to be unreliable for longer periods of time.

    Great video, by the way, I'm working on my project and I planned to used this power meter to measure the power consumed by the load but I also planned to used another power meter to measure the power of the solar produced. Such that my solar is the one who supplies the load. How is it possible? Can I ask for help? Thank you

      Simple.... Use another two analog input pin to read dc voltages and current ( dc current sensors are available in market or you can use low resistance at -ve end of solar panel or battery end there you will find voltage drop according to current flowing through it... Just read those two values, calculate multiplier number in code for correct reading on display , and use some variables to store values in different location like if this channel used kilos variable to store kilowatts then you can use kilos1 or KILOS

      In a lot of countries/regions tinkering with your homes electrical circuits is illegal. This is intended to be a simple non-contact meter for that reason.

      You can, you'll just need to stagger the sampling and you'll lose some of the accuracy. The Arduino can't actively monitor all of them at once, so will need to sample each individually.

    Hi Klements, thank you for your super energy meter and the great presentation. I have Photovoltaik plant - so i have power in both direktions. But i need just one Direktion (for my Power management). What shows the Display when the Power is in negative direktion (when the sun doesn´t shine and i need current from grid). do i destroy the Arduino in this case? Kind regards hoerbi

      The circuit simply measures the voltage drop across the burden resistor, it can't differentiate between power being supplied or drawn in either direction. As long as the magnitude of the current remains within the designed range, the Arduino is safe.

    It's working perfectly for Arduino, but its not working for ESP32 (TTGO TCall - SIM800L) Module. The analog values it gives is ranges from 2800 to 3750.
    Kindly help me with the calculations

      I’m not too familiar with the ESP32 but you should be able to get it to work. Do you know what the scaling on your analogue input is? What is the maximum and mid value? These will need to be updated in the code.
      You’ll also need to make sure that your circuit is providing an input in the correct voltage scale. What voltage is your ESP32 running at and what voltage do the analogue inputs accept?

    Interesting project, but this measurement can only be indicative, and not accurate. P=U*I, but we cannot assume the voltage and have to know it in every moment to be accurate since it is not constant (e.g. 220V), and fluctuates in our grid. So, you will need also voltage sensor for the project to accurately measure Current/Power/consumption.

      Yes you are correct, it's intended to be indicative only. It also doesn't account for the power factor because it's not measuring the voltage.

      How have you tested them? With a CT on the pin you should be getting fluctuating values. If you put a known steady voltage onto the pins do they still fluctuate?

      Hi Samuel, this is all possible with Arduino but it involves combining quite a few different tutorials. Have a look at the-diy-life.com for tutorials on ethernet connection and the energy meter. You then just need to add a small step down transformer to convert your 110VAC or 220VAC to 5V for the Arduino input.

    first off all i didnot buy ct transformer i collect it from electrical meater installed into the home by W.B.S.E.D.C.L so problem is i don't know about the specification of ct transformer so can u say the way of i determine the ct resistance r3 ? is the connection of lcd and arduino same like hellow world project ?

      If your CT doesn't have any part number or markings on it then you'll need to test it yourself. Connect a known load (current) through it with an arbitrary known burden resistor and measure the output voltage with a multimeter. You can then use the burden resistor calculation shown in the post in the video description in reverse to calculate the CT ratio.

      Actually Amp increase because voltage is not stable here 215,216,217 voltage frequently chenge like this and wattage gasually increased
      And ac voltage after adding burden registor 22 ohoms is 000 if i didnot add any registor and test i got 4 volt ac on keeping thr meater 200 volt ac

      Yes that CT would be able to be used for the project, but you need to make sure that it is appropriate for the load you're going to be measuring. There is more detail on this in my blog post linked in the video description.

      Hi Sangar, this could be a number of different issues. First try displaying the raw value from the CT on the Serial Monitor, it should be around 512 with no load. Then try applying a load and see if it changes. If you don't get a value around 512 and it doesn't change with a load then there's something wrong with your circuit. If you do, then there's an issue with your code.

      If you don't need separate results then just connect this meter to a multiplug and plug both into it. If you need individual monitoring then duplicate the circuit for each appliance and connect each to its own analogue input, then duplicate the code creating new variables reading from each analogue input.

      You'll need to get a step down transformer for the voltage monitoring. Either rectify a step down signal from a 5V transformer or use a 2.5V transformer with a 2.5V reference. You can then calculate the true power because you'll have both voltage and current readings.

      Hi Hamza,
      Kilowatt hours is a product of the power and the time in which that power was recorded. The 2.05 is the program cycle time, 2000 millisecond delay in the line below and 50 milliseconds to run through the code. This was measured using the serial monitor. There is a newer version of the code using the millis() function to calculate the exact time although this doesn't appear to dramatically affect the results - www.the-diy-life.com/simple-arduino-home-energy-meter/

      Bro DB means distribution board.it is the box where your electricity provider place the main fuse and electricty meter.from DB the connection is fed to the rest of the circuit breakers that is installed inside your house by your self.

      This one has a 30A CT so, depending on your supply voltage, 3,3kW or 6,6kW. But you can easily reconfigure it with a smaller or larger CT.

      This is initially setting the measured current to zero before the measurement is taken. The input is a sine wave, so zero is the middle, being 2.5V and this corresponds with half of 1023 (the analog input range), adjusted a little for actual the measured value.

      I'm not aware of any free/cheap software which allows you to accurately simulate an Arduino reading in an AC signal. Tinkercad has an Arduino simulation platform with a basic function generator if you'd like to try that? They don't have a CT though, so you'd need to simulate the signal from the CT using the function generator.

      Yes, that's what I mean by saying they don't have a CT. You can only use the function generator to simulate the signal being produced by the CT circuit, this is not going to give you accurate results though, just a rough idea of what to expect.

    Hi, Is AC1030 suitable to calculate voltage 230V? This is voltage output from solar converter. The power produced is 4200W maximally. Maybe I should use AC1200?

      Yes the AC1030 will be fine for 4200W at 230V. You could even us the AC1020 for better resolution. You can't use the AC1200, it is way too big for your application and you'll get very inaccurate and course readings.

    Hello - nice project - BUT, as others already mentioned, the values obtained are very imprecise, since they do not take into account the power factor (phase shift) or the constantly fluctuating mains voltage. ......May I encourage you to approach the project with your Arduino-knowledge from a completely different angle?
    Most modern power meters have an LED, which delivers pulses that are really accurate to the energy consumed. Our meter, for example, delivers 1000 LED pulses per 1 kWh. If you feed these light pulses directly into the Arduino (by using an LDR or a photo-transistor - clean signals no problem), you get a fairly accurate image of your currently consumed energy - including the power factor corrected and regardless of the constantly fluctuating mains voltage. Of course, this also works with 3-phase meters!
    I would like to build something like this, but I'm not good at Arduino programming ..would you be able to do it?

    You don't actually need the LCD shield, you can just use the 16x2 LCD on its own, you aren't using the shields other features, namely the buttons, in this project so why specify it? It's more expensive!

      Yes it is more expensive, it's just a lot easier for people who aren't confident with connecting up the display to the Arduino manually. It also makes a more compact finished product, which can just be mounted like it is, rather than having to build a housing to support the Arduino and the display.

    This is a bullshit meter, it can only "measure" resistive loads, no actual voltage measement like 110V, 230V, 215V, 240V a.s.o. just a constant.
    Take a multimeter, measure the current and multiply. Thats more correct. Even only for resistive loads.
    If you want to know how real power measement works, buy a Gosund SP1 and have a look inside. They have a chip for voltage and current and this chip can multiply the correct way. Chinese guys can show you! For 8 ... 12 € inkl. the case and app.

    I'm always annoyed to see amps multiplied by volts, make watts!!!! Your program fools people into believing false measurements and calculations. If we take a cos phi of 0.8 versus 1, and common voltage variations (225 to 240V), the values shown are wrong by > 20% !!!!!!!!!! And please, on the display, put VA and not Watts.
