    I need to do this exact thing with my power steering!! Justin in time, nathan! I could tell mine was leaking at the pinion input because it was oily-wet just like yours that you've shown.
    Great vid!

    Nice one! Man I never imagined you could service these! Never mind someone would have even gone to the trouble of fabricating a p/s o-ring replacement kit for these cars. I would definitely pick one up for my E82 if available. Please post a link to the shop selling this if possible.

    Great video. Could you please post a link to where you got the seal kit? That is the biggest challenge right now.

    Awesome man, was just manual swapping my 535i and saw the leak from here. Definitely going to rebuild it, and probably delete the active swaybars to get rid of the CHF bottles I keep in the trunk. Haha

    nice tutorial. an impact screwdriver, with a prior blast of heat/torch, is the way to go on those meddlesome machine screws. Did you post somewhere a link to the facebook page where you sourced the rebuild seal kit? I too have noticed that the rack and pinions on the e60 e65 tends to leak persistently from the input shaft. Good to finally see this tutorial published. thanks.

    On E60, does the subframe have to be removed to get the steering rack out? My configuration is a 528i with regular power steering (no active steering or dynamic drive)

    I find plenty of kits except for the e60. Do you think the e90 seal will fit in a 535i E60 with active steering?

    Nathan, I love your channel. You are the REAL DEAL! I do have a quick question for you and I know you have mentioned this in several videos just cant seem to locate right now. What tires do you typically put on all your cars again? I'm currently shopping around for tires for my sons stock 2008 E90 335i sedan, has 18 inch rims. Any advice is sincerely appreciated. Thank you!

    Does Lucas Stop Steering leak work? Will it stop a little bit? My boot is torn, does that mean I have to replace boot, or if Lucas stops the leak, everything is ok (no need to replace boot)?

    I occasionally had problems removing screws on aircraft. Get an impact screw driver. Not a battery-operated unit, the ones you hit with a hammer. Basically, it's a punch that turns when you strike it. Can save you rounding out a screw. More force down that torsional. Cheap tool.

    Man we need the sizes on those seals if you could! If not one of us will have to pull apart one of the steering racks to get the seal dimensions.

    Any tips on how to centre the rack mines slightly out. Thanks

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  Рік тому

      You have to count the turns on the steering wheel to get that center, then unhook the steering shaft and turn the wheels straight

    There is so much reluctance in the car industry to get anyone to do this kind of work. Chances are that the original rack with a new seal will out last a fully reconditioned one...

      Tend to agree, but why are “aftermarket” reman units so crappy/leaky? Is it really that difficult to rebuild correctly…I mean is the aftermarket using either incompatible, incorrectly sized or otherwise inferior seals, or are other worn components on shoddy units just not replaced when they should be? *So sad that too frequently many cars get to this fork in the road, where such an expensive job due to *both* costly removal labor, quality part cost, and sadly-owners going ‘round and ‘round with incompetent mechanic shops that charge their shop labor, still don’t do the job right and owners just give up. It leads to many cars ending up in the junkyard much too soon, which is sad

    • @mobitechaz
      @mobitechaz Рік тому

      I am contemplating this very point. Have yet to come across any other leaks on these racks except for the input shaft and in some instances the pressure lines. If i had to guess, the rebuild units are made with inferior quality seals, they are only warrantied for a relatively short time, and they want you to buy their product again after it fails in 1-2 years is my guess. They don't sell a lot of these types of rebuilds if i had to guess...who knows what is really inside them or if they have replaced all seals? BBB industries makes a cheap reman. BOSCH KS01000936 is another $1000 or so reman option. Hard to go through all that labor and not consider replacing the entire rack new, imho. But it does seem like this input shaft seal is the only weak link on these racks. I have an e60 with 190k on it, rack has no issues.

    Cool if you could put a digital vernier on that one seal and tell us the inside diameter, outside diameter and the thickness. There is nothing unique or expensive about these seals, you just order them up by size for 10$ each.
