There's probably some merit in this quote, but it is also Murphy's law. The conquests of Ferdinand III of Castile are always the saddest part of this story for me. He was destroying, economically and culturally, the south of Spain to make it his own and of his heirs. Given that Andalusia one of the poorest reagions of Spain today I wonder if it was worth it...
He probably considered that remaining in power was more important than protecting Seville from the Castilians, maybe he wanted to wait for a time where he would be stronger to retake Seville back.
