Today it looks a bit different. Things change fast. I'm pretty sure Ovi was in some way injured and maybe also had some stress from the events in the past (losing his dad, Bäckström suddenly retiring). Growing up in Alberta, while Gretzky was in his prime, was memorable. The rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton was some of the best hockey I've ever witnessed. Ovechkin is also a legend. He adapted like no other Russian to the Canadian game. Tough and determined. I always felt records are eventually broken, in some lifetime, even when some seem unimaginable. Lemieux, I believed, was one player to do so if his health didn't fail. He could score at will. Just look at his games played to goals ratio. An incredible.75 goals/game. Never happened. And Bossy .76 goals /game? Comparing is difficult, because circumstances never play the same in players for different reasons. Nonethelless, they are two of the greatest I've ever seen, bar none!!!

He has 675 assists and is an underrated passer, he averaged 50 assists/year while putting up the amount of goals his did his first 5 years in the league. He is the ultimate team player and used his physicality, speed and ability to be in position to reach the numbers he has and pretty much every season was the guy who would drag the team kicking and screaming to win, he would lead. You're looking at the last 5 years and using that as his whole career. Watch some of his compilations from his earlier years and it becomes much more obvious how he isn't "A one trick pony". Older generations don't want to see a record of the great one broken, but lets be honest, the overall skill level of guys on the ice during those eras were not the same, the goalies skill levels and size and pads were smaller, it would be insane for someone to break most of the points.

In Gretzkys time, people were smoking a pack of cigarettes before the games. Average life expectancy was 50 years old. Most of the NHL players were doing other gigs working part time. And they even took out the center red line!!...thats like changing to only 5 yards for a first down. Gretzky and the Oilers changed the way the game was played. For years, they said you couldnt win the Stanley Cup WITH A WIDE OPEN , OFFENSIVE style of play. They played and looked like a European team. After they won, almost all the other teams started copying them, which led to the greatest 10-15 years of hockey ever played. You had to be a spectacular, "break away" goalie because the other teams were gonna get chances galore too. Now all these players do is dump and chase, trying to break the "trap" that all teams play. All the teams look the same and play the same way. now....and its a boring, stupid looking game now. Almost every game is 2-1..3-2..or 4-3. You don't want to talk about assists because Gretzky makes everyone else look bad but in a comparison with Ovi he makes Ovi look pathetic. Gretzky could have stopped counting assists after 6 seasons and would still be ahead of Ovi. Ovi doesn't play defense and is a major liability to his team in that regard. He ranks in the bottom 1-3% in the league on defense. So he is cherrypicking, only looking to shoot, gets all power play time and STILL can't catch Gretzky when it is Ovi's only function.

As of posting this comment Ovechkin is only 66 Goals behind Gretzky's record & still is signed for 2 seasons past this current one
In the next 2.5 seasons to catch Gretzky he needs to score 26.4 goals per season for instance.
Lets say Ovechkin is right behind Gretzky's goal record after 2.5 years, I'd assume somebody in the league would offer him a 1yr extension for cheap even if his play continue to not be anywhere near what it once was. If so :
In the next 3.5 seasons to catch Gretzky's goal record he'd need 18.8 goals per season
The fact Ovechkin only needs to score at a 19 goal pace if he plays through the rest of his contract + signs for 1yr somewhere afterwards is why I still believe that IF Ovechkin can stay healthy & if Ovechkin wants it enough he can still beat Gretzky. I think Ovechkin is still a 20 goal guy

Gretzky is still, to this day, the best player. If he played in today's league, he would still be the greatest. What is interesting about Gretzky is the fact that he wasn't the fastest or best skater, he didn't have the hardest shot, he didn't hard or hit at all, and he wasn't the best stickhandler/dangler. He was arguably not the best in any single skills category, but his complete game was and to this day is unmatched.
He was hardly ever injured because he always had his head up and was difficult to hit, players that tried described him as being frustrating because they would roll off him against the boards. His ability to anticipate where the puck would be going was better than anybody's, he was able to look ahead and anticipate like a chess player. He knew where other players would be which allowed him to make great passes. He was just always in the right spot. Best hockey player to ever live.

In my book he already is the greatest goal scorer because Ovechkin had to go through a lot of missed games he had nothing to do with due to two lockouts and the pandemic. He probably was denied over 100 games and 50+ goals because of this. The first lockout in 05, which would've been his rookie season, kept the NHL shut down for an entire season, the second about half of it ( and then he was in his prime ), and he also was denied a few more games due to the pandemic later on. If not for all those missed games he'd be ahead of Gretzky's record right now.

What's the point if you're not gonna answer the question or at least give a good hypothesis? lol. Here, I'll help ya. OV is now slower from a reflex/age perspective, just age, it's normal. Key members of the team have been injured for a large chunk of the season like Oshie, Backstrom was the biggest reason OV had so many goals, Kuzy was secondary to Backstrom. Now Backy is gone, Kuzy is a shell of himself, Oshie is out. Orlov is gone who was one of the most underrated D-men and should've been resigned (I seem to remember the Caps signing two old D-men from Pittsburgh that everyone said was stupid cause they were too old, especially Orpik, Niskanen maybe not as much but both got long contracts when they were outside their prime). GM said Orlov was too old. He was a great passer from the point on the PP. John Carlson can't seem to make a nice pass from the point on the powerplay and put the puck in OV's wheelhouse so he can one-time it. It's always too far in front of OV to where he can't one-time it, he has to stop it first, not sure what the hell is going on with Carlson's passing. Backstrom not being there is a huge reason to all of this. Backstrom was an amazing passer and stickhandler, so good D-men would back off instead of pressuring Backy in fear he would burn them with a slick stickhandling move, you can't replace that, plus they were/are best friends. A connection you can't duplicate. All you have to do is go watch OV's latest goal against Nashville on 12/30/23, look where Strome placed the puck, closer to OV's back foot so he could get full power and maximum accuracy on a one-timer. Carlson seems to struggle with that, it's always closer to his front foot. Maybe Carlson is expecting OV to move into the pass and OV is just staying stationary, IDK. Playing as long as I have and being a good passer, I have to fault Carlson more so, I don't think he's ever been a great passer on the point. When OV was younger he played like a bull in China shop, skated at full speed like a wrecking ball destroying and hitting everything, dragging his teammates along for the ride. Now he needs others to help him, Milano or Strome might help, maybe the young new Russian can provide a spark. It'll turn around, just need to find the right pairing. Look at Mantha, everyone was ready to bounce his sorry ass, but he's found a good pairing with Protas and McMichael, even Lapiere filled in when McMichael had the flu and that line has looked really good. If the Caps can get Oshie healthy and Pacioretty back to where other teams have more people to worry about than just shutting down OV, he'll start getting better looks, D that is more tired from defending better players. It's not all OV is what I'm saying.

He honestly is playing good this year, hes getting great assists but not shooting well. He would have had the record already if not for the covid years, the shortened 2013 season, and his entire original rookie season of 04 05 cancelled. That's OVER 2 full seasons and maybe 100 goals he lost. He'd be looking at 1000 possibly if not for that. Plus Gordie Howe technically has more goals than Gretzky, except they don't count the WHA goals in the NHL of course. But total pro goals? Howe is #1.

I stopped comparing him with someone like Gretzky about ten years ago, Ovy used to be a team player when he first played in NHL for Caps, he used to go after the puck and score, make scoring opportunities for the team, then about ten years ago I noticed that the team was playing for him to score from his spot where he planted himself waiting for a pass so he slap shoot the puck.

I think it'll be a sad conclusion to a modern tale if Ovi can't find his way to the all-time goal scoring record. But... it'll also be kind of depressing if he crawls out at age 45 scoring 5-6 goals a season to inch over the finish line and take #1 spot. I think another question might be what will the Capitals do with Ovi if they feel he is in serious decline and no longer warrants position on top lines or the PP... Lots of uncertainty; Gretzky is from my hometown and I'll always hold him as the greatest ever, but I want the best for Ovi too and I hope he does find his form and cap off his career as the greater goal scorer.

He needs to score 67 goals in 112 games to tie Gretzky in the same amount of games, and if he needs more games to break the record, that would be lame. If he doesn't improve his gpg, he wont break the record even if he plays out the remainder of his contract, which has 2 more years after this one. Ovi’s limitations are starting to show. He doesn’t have a stacked line of talented playmakers (like Backstrome) feeding him the buck and we see what he really produces. Great goal scorer for sure but he is a 1 dimensional player that always focused on padding his goal totals over his teams success. Don’t believe me? Compare his short handed record with Gretzky’s. Why doesn’t Ovi ever play shorthand? How about playoff success, how many series did Gretzky win compared to Ovi? These numbers are not even close.
The thing that made Gretzky’s goal record so magical was the fact his goal scoring came secondary at best to his playmaking and general focus on winning. The only player that played both ends of the ice like he did and produced both in palymaking and goals was Mario who might have been a contender had he not got sick. I also think players like Sakic and YZermen are better than Ovi, they just played in a much lower scoring era of the late 80’s into the early 2000. Lowest scoring era with arguably the best goalies in history. And Gretzky played the 2nd half of his career in that era.

To be fair, I think he's been snake-bitten. He'll probably average at least double that (0.35 GPG) for the rest of his contract, which'll get him past the 894 record in the 200 games or so he has remaining.
