- I do not own the copyrights to this video. This is the 1969 Southern 500 that I had on a VHS. It comes from a VHS set called "The Golden Era of Racing". If you know anything about this set please tell me because I would like to buy more volumes from the set.
I laid out of work (missed double time and a half on holidays), and broke a date to go with friends. I slept on the damp ground in the parking area the night before. I sat on the backstretch during the race. When it rained we decided they would never get it in before dark and we left. We were well beyond Charlotte when they restarted. We listened to the last few laps on the radio at home in Hickory. I was a disappointed Pearson fan and didn't regret leaving as much when I heard the finish. The next day my bossed raised hell, the girl raised hell, and the day after that I came down with a hell of a cold. I still haven't returned to Darlington.
Footage is priceless as it was the only year Richard Petty drove a Ford in NASCAR, leaving Mopar cars for a year. All the cars from these years are cool. Did anyone ever run in a big block chevelle?
There were Chevelles with 427s. Probably the driver with the most fame driving one was Coo Coo Marlin. You have to remember that in 1969, Chevy saw no relevance in either NASCAR or drag racing that was applicable to street cars. Chevy saw road racing as the greatest way to get technical feedback and apply it to street driven cars. There was back door support for the Penske Camaros and of course the ZL1 427 all aluminum engine as used in the Can Am series.
Paul Van Valkenburgh, an engineer with the secretive Chevy R&D, in his book about Chevrolet Racing, made it clear that Chevy had no interest in either stock car racing or drag racing. As you may recall, at the end of 1962, GM came out with a corporate ban on any auto racing by any of the divisions. Pontiac and Chevy had pretty much dominated drag racing and stock car racing.
To show you how much GM was out of racing, Mark Donohue was having trouble in 1967 with rocker arm balls galling. He contacted Vince Piggins at Chevy in Detroit and asked for him to air ship rocker arm balls to California for a race Mark was at. These were improved rocker arm balls to eliminate galling. Mark had to threaten to withdraw from the race if Piggins would not send these items. Piggins relented and shipped them, but because of the lack of support by Chevy, Roger Penske went with AMC in 1970.
Simply the best era of NASCAR in my opinion! I like all the stock car racing from 1948 to the early 2000's but in my eyes the peak was 1967 to 1971. They really had everything going for them, the best looking cars, the best drivers, the best racing, the best EVERYTHING! If I were to build a time machine, I would go back to those years just to see those races over and over and over again! Awesome video!
Totally agree … NASCAR is now dead … Rip 🪦…
My Grandpa was at this race. He died in '76. I still have his ticket and a $1 bill signed by Cale.
"Folks ask me, 'How's it feel to drive a stock car flat out?' I tell 'em, 'I don't know. I'm only a voice actor.'"
Great video. I have a nice collection that I taped off the Victory Circle with Dave Dispain on the Speed Vision channel back when it was worth watching Dave covered all the 60 and 70 races One of races I'm hoping will show up on this venue is the 1967 Permatex 300 sportsman race. Ernie Tufts owned a 1961 Ford Starliner hardtop that owned the race until the distributor shaft broke, it was all Paul Goldsmith could do to stay in the same lap with his 64 Hemi Plymouth.
This was the REAL stock car racing I remember as a kid.Wish theyd go back to no ground effects, and everybody runs their own engines, and you coulkd actually buy the cars in dealers.
The technology arms race took that away decades ago. Ground effects isn't the problem; speeds too fast for the tracks to handle, radial tires, and the points-racing mentality are the problem.
buckzx12r cars by this time were not stock and aero was ganing importance.
@@davdhartung9817 1969 rule book says otherwise, starting at Section 20-1, Competing Models - GENERAL
"All parts must originate from stock production castings and forgings which have been machined according to the normal machining schedule utilized for standard production parts. They may be subsequently refined, modified and improved by further machining or rework.
No changes from standard production automobiles or component parts will be permitted except as specified in following specifications:"

WOW, What great drivers and Fast Fords, real cars!
12:23 That's Herb Thomas, three-time Southern 500 winner (1951, '54 and '55) and two-time NASCAR champ (1951 and '53), in the driver's seat of that dirt car!
Richard in a Ford. He called Plymouth's hand and made them build a winged Plymouth for 1970. The Dodge Charger Daytona was already green lit in "69 but Plymouth balked and Richard left for one year. He was "winging it" in 1970! BTW~~~These old school drivers needed a peach basket in their cars to hold their balls.
Back when Nascar was a sport as opposed to fake manufactured entertainment for TV.
LeeRoy was one of the best is not the best. Fearless but that fearless cost him his life. The hard crash at Texas and later at Indy took its tow on LeeRoy. All eras are great to be a race fan but that era gives me chills. RIP LeeRoy my friend...
He’s often forgotten by those less knowledgeable about the history of NASCAR racing but Lee Roy was a great racer with a lot of heart on the track.
@@davidthompson62 the more I learn about Leroy, the more i think that he should be in the all time top 5 drivers in stockcar racing
Well said
great vid, thanks for posting. makes me love my '68 Torino fastback even more. ;-)
THANKS FOR THE POST! Great race! Too bad its been been stripped. Darlington stripes for real all day every way
Terrific video. Thanks for posting it. I especially love the narration (a new and different voice!) and the coverage of the parade in downtown Darlington. But ... who is the narrator?
Wayne Smith.
No problem... Some time down the road I will upload more races from my collection.
I've read where Junior Johnson said that LeeRoy Yarbrough was the best race car driver he'd ever seen. After seeing how LeeRoy drove the wheels off that car to beat Pearson I can certainly see why. And that was after hitting the guardrail!!! Junior was a happy car owner after the race. And what the h--- was Glotzbach doing racing LeeRoy when he was 4 laps down and there was less than 10 laps to go!!!!
Presumably he said that before Cale was his driver.
50 years ago today. I remember LeeRoys win. He was my hero back then. Clearly he was the best back in 69!
Awesome vid! Thanks for sharing. Love old school NASCAR!
so do i hoss new school is for woke jerks
Every year in September they raced the Southern 500. Always under the threat of rain....so many races were shortened
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE. NASCAR IS STILL RELEVANT AND BETTER THAN EVER.
great year, great cars, great flag.
damn right now the rebel flag is being as a evil weapon against black people 4 no damn reason this woke bullshit and hate has got to stop what happened to our clean non hateful 1st amendment rights oh wait we don t have that right just the right obey a stupid rebel flag ban
Would you happen to have a video of the 1970 nascar racing in Atlanta ? My dad went to this race. Would love to see it !
Seems strange to see Petty in a Ford, but that's what he had. The 70 Superbird coaxed him back to a Plymouth.
It was because Plymouth wouldn't make him a Superbird in '69 while Dodge guys got the Daytona. It seems that the make of car meant more back then. The Wood Brothers preferred Mercurys to Fords back then too.
The Spoiler either crashed or won.
@@timdub70 there were no Daytonas or Birds in this race.
Back when stock cars weren’t made of cheap plastic
Damm I know my man is not going to WIN and yet I'm still rooting for Richard Petty 50 plus years later,!!!! 2022
My brother had a 1969 Ford Torino GT Fastback with a 351 Cleveland. He outran a Chrysler 440 that one police officer had but was caught the next day trying to sneak home. LOL
The Cleveland is a big block! That sucker fit in a Torino?? Jesus that thing must of been flying literally! Lol!!
The 351 Cleveland was not a big block. In 1969, the engines available in the Torino ranged from a 302, a 351 Windsor, and big blocks 390 and 428. The 351 Cleveland did not come out until 1970.
He didnt out run a 440 maybe out drove a cop but trust me son a 351 ford haha
You calling him a liar ?
1 of only 5 last lap passes to win in track history. Earnhardt, Waltrip, Weatherly, Craven were the others.
You Did Great Mike
MR. JIM MARCUM DODGE MADE 2 CHARGERS WITH THE FLUSH BACK WINDOW !! 1. 1969 DODGE CHARGER 500 , 1969 DODGE CHARGER DAYTONA !!
i have a bobby allison 69 mercury cyclone coming , should be ready in a couple of weeks , caught the bug
Was this the year they had reconfigured the track and made it wider?
were these 427/s or the Boss 429's, seems they ran both that year.
Depended upon whether you could afford a new engine.
Top tier drivers got the Shotgun in '69. You can see "429 CI" on Lee Roy's hood as he comes into the pits, for instance. I know my favorite driver, David Pearson, ran the Shotgun from the beginning of it's reign. My understanding is that there were plenty of Shotguns for those teams that were on Ford's "good list". Only rare ones were the 494 Can Am blocks & other Can Am related exotic pieces. Some drivers did still run the 427.
Wasn't this the year that they found out LeeRoy's car had a shorter inside wheelbase than outside?
Only illegal if the difference is over 1/2".
That's racing not like today's
american cars 4 everrrrrrrrrr
imagine if the Prima donna's of today had to drive these sleds...
When giants drove NASCAR.
from a time before all the cars being the same. NASCAR today sucks
NASCAR is now dead … Rip 🪦…
Michael Waltrip said it...NASCAR is going to die because they arent running STOCK CARS anymore...throw in the political crap that does things like take that flag away...for what
1969 Mustang
Richard Petty in a Ford! Noooooooo.
The only way he could compete in 1969.
Look at today. They're now driving Chevrolet Carmaro ZL1 edition vehicles in today's top tier NASCAR series.
who's the narrator in this?
jake case I don't know but I was getting ready for him to pull out his 6-shooters, start firing into the air and yelling "Yeeee -- haaaaaaaa!!!!" lol
Brian Williams. The newscaster? Lol.
jake case I love those old-timer announcers back then. Chris Ecomomaki was very cool too. The one I miss the most was Benny Parsons -- he was my NASCAR grand daddy. RIP Benny and Chris !!
One of my favorites was ken squire.
Who's the blonde model in "Victory Lane" :P
Go Leroy, top money for 69...
