Revisiting, on the upside, a year has passed slowly, on the downside, it's another year without Grant, I discovered TKOR around 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed everything I've watched, it broke my heart to hear he passed, at least us nerds are keeping him alive

Actually plasma is the fourth state of matter, not electricity. An electric spark produces plasma when it is in the air because it ionizes the particles around it.

Don't drill into metal with black oxide. You'll spend forever drilling and you'll dull your bit in not time. The best type to use is carbide, but titanium drill bits will work.
titanium will work best for aluminum since the coating doesn't stick as well with aluminum and will guide the chips out better. yeah black oxide should not be used for metal
and the absense of lubricant is scaring me

Oh, I thought you meant for tapping the threads, yeah as long as the bits are sharp and clearing chips well, you don't really need lubricant unless its overheating or not clearing chips

grant, you shouldn't be using a hammer on a spring loaded center punch like that, I've seen several break like that at robotics club. Also, you should use titanium or cobalt drill bits to cut through metal, they'll make it way easier and last longer, black oxide bits aren't meant for metal

yeah, I mean they'll still cut the aluminum for sure as proven by the video, but I bet he probably wouldn't be complaining about how hard it was to drill if he had been using titanium bits
Kevin Crossland you probably forgot to mention that he is either drilling too slow and too fast. To add up he used the tap wrong and didn't use a cutting compound. Another one is he is using his tools but its not for their intended purpose... I understand that this is a DIY but you still have to use the right and proper tools correctly...

WD40 makes a great drilling and tapping fluid for aluminum.

I hear WD-40 makes pretty decent flame thrower fuel as well... AND it smells nice!
Tapping fluid is like £5 so why not buy the proper stuff your taps and drills will last so much longer.
Because wd40 works better for aluminium. Many tapping fluids don't work well on aluminum because they're formulated for ferrous materials.

My friends son made one for around $35. old RC car, cheap 12v batteries, and some chineseaum electronics.
If you use grease on the drill it will catch the drillings.
Also most plumbing fittings are tapered and don't need all that thread tape

You should of put the hot metal in oil. Not water. Water will make it weak. Watch out it may crack.
