The Sylvers and the Jackson's were different but I will tell you this, NO ONE could touch the Sylvers when it came to HARMONY! HI Olympia. Sorry but I really loved Olympia and Foster.

As I listened to r&b in the early 80’s, I gravitated to all the songs with his baselines and productions, not knowing one man was responsible. Wow!!! I came across this upload about Leon Sylvers, and as a Black kid, growing up in Chicago during the 70s and 80s, R&B music was king in my heart!!! Leon Sylvers, Quincy Jones, Rod Temperton, The Calloway Brothers, and The Lewis Brothers, were my idols when it came to song writing and music production!!! Especially, when it comes to Leon Sylvers, because my favorite groups are Shalamar, Lakeside, Dynasty, Midnight Star, and Atlantic Star!!! I especially would enjoy hearing about these guys, on WGCI, with Frankie Crooker, every Sunday evening!!! New Subscriber, and Awesome Channel!!! 53 years young , from Chicago, USA!!!
My oldest brother Maurice plays the bass and is dope. I grew up in L.A. during the 70's listening to the grooves. This is video is a great service to the history of music. Thank you.
Bro I’m so glad someone finally gave Leon his due!!! I’ve been a fan of his music and production style from the beginning. He is still one of my favorite producers! You even mentioned about how he mentored Jam and Lewis! They did a joint venture on a group called Real to Reel. The song was called Love Me Like This. When you hear it, you will hear Leon all over it!!!! Awesome job!!!!!

Your contributions ????? Will live on Infinity !!!!!!! ✌🏿❤️😄
He's a master on The Bass Guitar and he's all over The SOLAR Record sound! He was trying to recreate the MOTOWN Sound via SOLAR sound! He definitely was influenced by James Jameson and the Motown sound and The Funk Brothers! Thank you for sharing your video!
i love your channel man. I like how you talk about the less popular bass players, that everyone should know, instead of the same 10 bass players everyone always talk about. There are so many more influential bass players out there than just your Victor Wootens, Marcus Millers, and James Jamersons.
Leon is still one of the baddest Kats on the block. Too many songs to choose from…………did he write “In the Raw “ and “ Keep on loving me “by the Whispers ? Those bass lines are outstanding !
🌟 This video is so GOOD! Everything about it-giving Leon his shine, the knowledge dropped, the baseline breakdowns, the passion in your voice-this is my first time seeing this and I'm here for it💜 Well done 👍🏽
this might be your best tribute video yet, maybe one of the best overall. totally unaware of mr. silvers and his prolific output and clearly i am missing out. #4 had me in stitches - yeah the octaves are important! amazing video!
_Huge_ fan of Leon's here! The first video I ever uploaded was a how-to of "And The Beat Goes On", and I later uploaded "Second Time Around". I don't understand why he isn't mentioned in the same conversation as other all-time great bassists. My guess is that it's because most of his memorable lines are for other artists. It was awesome of you to create this list and draw attention to one of the best bassists/musicians/producers in R&B history. Great job!
Take That Too The Bank!!! Great video my friend!!! Always been a fan of Mr. Leon Sylvers!! Truth be told had the Sylvers stayed together, the Shalamar sound would of been there’s, probably not to mention other great works of his! 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
According to the “Standing in the Shadows of Motown”, James Jamerson actually played the bass on “Boogie Fever”, and was the only gold record he ever received and was one of the only big acknowledgements of his work during his lifetime!
True. Weird, because at that point in his career, James's strings were so beat up (never changed!) which caused the intonation to be so bad that his bass had to be really low in the mix and doubled with a keyboard.
This is a good explanation: Absolutely. The harmonic balance is thrown out by old strings that have stretched and/or (partially) corroded by the acid in ones fingers. @@AiMR
@@AiMR It's not the acid like the drug, if that's what you're thinking. More like amino acid. I don't know what else to tell you. You will have to look it up.
I loved this video. I’m not a bass player but I love good music. I was 5 yrs old when “Misdemeanor” was released and that song brings me joy. I had NO IDEA Leon Sylvers was behind all of my favorite groups. I listen to him everyday. I just finished a 1 hr walk with “Misdemeanor “ on repeat the entire time. God truly blessed him with a talent that in unmatched.
Leon Sylvers III basslines are so precise and techinical you can be grooving to the song and the basslines are so lush, you couldn't deny that his style was funky. He has a midas touch in music that completely underrated even to this day. Watching this channel made me love the bass even more. This channel has made the bass guitar and violin turn itself into a science.
I may have shed a tear when I saw the title of this video! Finally, someone is drawing the appropriate attention to Sir Leon’s genius. Leon made me a bass player without me actually realizing it. I gushed over his production work back in the day, not really paying attention to him being the bass player, but ultimately I discovered I had learned to rate songs by their bassline because that’s how he built them. Thanks for the post!
This is exactly what I wanted. I've been looking for some new basslines to learn and this will keep me busy for the next few months. Man these songs are so good. Thanks for putting this list together.

Thanks for doing this video. James Jamerson, Leon Sylvers and Bernard Edwards are my trinity of R&B fingerstyle bass players. Check out the Solar Galaxy of Stars DVD, it's worth it alone for the 10s clip of Leon grooving during the bass vamp on I've just begun to love you.
His nuance of syncopation and long notes on Turn Me Out (the Whispers) is impressive and like for so many, the bass makes that song.
@@fivestringraal you should totally check this guys channel out as hes doing a 50 bassline tribute to Leon Sylvers done on a Ric perfectly. Heres his cover of Turn me out: ua-cam.com/video/5jGQ_FevtNw/v-deo.html
Yes you got it 💯percent because they are definitely my favorite 3. Marcus Miller is 4th.
@@jordanscott4066 only seeing this now. really good stuff including trans. Thanks!
@@jamessmallwood5061 Marcus Miller can do decent fingerstyle indeed. Slap bass is its own thing.
So underrated as a Bass Player and Producer. My favorite Bass Line "This kinda of lovin" The Whispers
The best. Period. Fantastic basselines. His productions, wow!!!!.
I love the Carrie Lucas joint "show me where you're coming from"
Now I understand why I love Jam and Lewis so much! It’s Leon!!! I’ve loved his music since my youth. Thanks for this!!! It was great!
Say WHAT
I remember a lot of years of my life by this guys music , truly amazing !🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️😇
My oldest brother Maurice plays the bass and is dope. I grew up in L.A. during the 70's listening to the grooves. This is video is a great service to the history of music. Thank you.
Loved this video!! Thank you Leon Sylvers❤
Mine are two ... Love all but my late father I think of .... Misdemeanor ...... And The Beat Goes On ...... Me and my friend are the end of the Babyboomer generation so we've seen history .. Am living in it unrelated.....Mr . Leon Sylvers was highly underrated .... Really never received his true props to the music industry !!!!!! I personally Thank Him !!!! Because if it wasn't for his great music ????! I wouldn't of learned to play piano 🎹 by ear....... No a virtuoso or prodigy ...... But now I can hear arrangements in my head ..... Your contributions ????? Will live on Infinity !!!!!!! ✌🏿❤️😄
You sir are a music savant! Beautifully presented
I DID NOT KNOW!!!
An excellent tribute. Thank you, sir.
He's a master on The Bass Guitar and he's all over The SOLAR Record sound! He was trying to recreate the MOTOWN Sound via SOLAR sound! He definitely was influenced by James Jameson and the Motown sound and The Funk Brothers! Thank you for sharing your video!
Thanks for putting a spotlight on brother Leon!!
Definitely one of the most underrated bassist
i love your channel man.
Don't know about 'In the Raw' but he produced and played bass on 'Keep On Lovin Me' which is my ATF Whispers track.
Ricky Sylvers did the bass on In The Raw, Leon did, Keep on Loving Me.

Thanks for the post // Leon "The Maestro" Sylvers // My all time favorite : "MAKE THAT MOVE" .....missing from your list " NIGHT TO REMEMBER" !!!!
🌟 This video is so GOOD! Everything about it-giving Leon his shine, the knowledge dropped, the baseline breakdowns, the passion in your voice-this is my first time seeing this and I'm here for it💜 Well done 👍🏽
Multiple thumbs up for this video.....Thank You. Leon Sylvers III was an amazing musician and producer. I'm a hugh SOLAR fan!
this might be your best tribute video yet, maybe one of the best overall. totally unaware of mr. silvers and his prolific output and clearly i am missing out. #4 had me in stitches - yeah the octaves are important! amazing video!
And the beat goes on is my favorite I can listen to that song over and over again.
@@MrBubba171811 How would the strings being old effect the intonation?
This is a good explanation:
Absolutely. The harmonic balance is thrown out by old strings that have stretched and/or (partially) corroded by the acid in ones fingers.
@@AiMR
@@MrBubba171811 Acid in the fingers? That sounds more like an unsubstantiated claim than explanation.
@@AiMR It's not the acid like the drug, if that's what you're thinking. More like amino acid. I don't know what else to tell you. You will have to look it up.
Great excursion into Mr. Leon’s world!!🎶🎶🎶🎶
Leon all love to you my brother. BASS MAN YOUR MUSIC 🎶 🎵 IS FOREVER. RICK BRENNAN FROM CHANGE AND COMPOSITE TRUTH BAND N PHILLY LOVE ALWAYS 333.RICK
Your videos are the best! History, legends, geniuses, artists presented in a manner that the lay person can relate to…so good! Thanks
Misdemeanor was the precursor to New Edition’s “Candy Girl”
Dynasty's "Here I Am"... Wow!
This is exactly what I wanted. I've been looking for some new basslines to learn and this will keep me busy for the next few months. Man these songs are so good. Thanks for putting this list together.
