Why the Glacier Peak Volcano Could be the Biggest Threat to the USA you Haven't Heard About

- Although quiet for hundreds of years, learn what an eruption could look like from Glacier Peak in Washington State, and just how in the dark we are about if it will happen. To complicate the matter, the volcano is in a wilderness area, meaning installing this monitoring requires significant thought and review as to how it will impact the environment. How can these important aspects be balanced?
Not far from people... I get a kick out of this comment! I live like 30 minutes away from it alongside 823k others in Snohomish county... Not to mention another 8-900k people in neighboring counties... But you know... Remote and deep in the cascades. lol
Nothing in the cascades is ever remote
Ikr, I was born in Skagit County in 71, lived in Snohomish County for a decade in the 90's and live in Whatcom County now.
The amount of people that live in the area now is making me want to leave.
Thank you for your information. I appreciate all the information I can get.
Thank you for your diligence!
In the summer of 2022, the government gave the green light to put in 4 seismometer stations, giving better data and warning indications of any increased, shallower earthquakes (finally!).
While few people live in the shadow of this volcano... Meanwhile I feel crowded out being born to the area.
Glacier Peak is the only stratovolcano in the lower 48 states that can have a VEI-7 eruption.
What about other stratovolcanoes like lassen, hood, Jefferson, and the 3 sisters
For perspective, the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens was a VEI-5
What is your evidence for this claim? Glacier Peak has a very slow influx, and there's no evidence of calderas have being formed since it's initiation ~600,000 years ago.
and where are you getting your info I don't find anything saying glacier peak ever erupted that big (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacier_Peak) i vei scales of 2 to 4
Citation needed. Also Crater Lake in Oregon produced a VEI 7 thousands of years ago.
The road up to Kennedy hot spring needs to be replowed. Its not a big deal except they think they are going to reclaim all the roads that access the wilderness areas.
And it is so rugged that the road needs to be in place to mitigate forest fires.
Seems to require a precedent that would probably later impact many other wilderness areas.
Update Forest Service gives the green light for more monitoring on Glacier Peak
Drake, you need to blink more often.
The forestry service had roads that use to get up pretty far into that area. But like most governments they don’t want people to access the places we pay for.
If you're referring to the old road heading to the Monte Cristo mining town site, that road was washed away WAY beyond repair, back in the 80s. You can now hike in from Barlow Pass (easy-grade 4 mile hike). Also, Glacier Peak is designated wilderness area, so getting roads up there is a non-starter anyway. Last year, the government approved putting in 4 seismometer stations around the mountain, so we'll now get better data and warnings.
man came back after 2 years
