WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

Jack, I'm always impressed by your work, and I laugh my ass off at some of your reactions. Like when you took that chunk out of the middle at 16:23, and your reaction was, "that solves that problem; it was too wide." It's nice to know that I'm not the only one this stuff happens to.
That’s a good looking point !
That stone is far more mesmerizing than usual! Rock On!

As always! Great Video!!
Just got some tools for Christmas and made some others. I have been watching your videos for about 8 months. I feel you have shortened my learning curve a lot. I also enjoy the random monologs.
Thanks, and best wishes for your dad.
Thank you
Very nice work and what patience. I could hear maybe a clock ticking at times. Very good little challenge.
Yes, there's a clock on the wall. 😁
It seems to me that you are a master craftsman!
Thank you
Enjoyed your video very much, this material looks a lot like the high grade dover flint I find in south central Tennessee. Has a very sharp edge.
Yeah, it looks similar, but the Dover is a lot tougher than this.
I’m from Giles county. What part are you in
@@parkersouthgate674 Lauderdale co. Alabama, l find dover in Wayne and Lawrence co. Tenn.
Considering the chunk that you started with, that was an especially good result.
Thanks 🙂
Beautiful work 🙌 inspired me, see what flint i can find suitsble on the isle of wight
Very good
I am thankful that I found your UA-cam channel! I believe that we have similar algorithms.
Probly. 😊
Very Nice Thank you.
You're very welcome
Beautiful work! I’ve been using mineral oil on those little finger nail steps. I just wipe it down and it works its way under them. Then wipe off the excess with a paper towel. Sometimes they just disappear. It works especially well on dark colored raw cherts like root beer, horn stone etc. I prefer melted beeswax but the oil is faster and easier.
True. I keep some mineral oil in my stash of "tools" but I hardly ever use it.
Beautiful Stone! Awesome Point! 😎🏹
Thanks Michael
Nice point Jack

Not sure of the name but I find the same stuff of multiple different colors in my areas from north KC to Iowa
Interesting
It’s Tennessee Tyrone….Bigsby cannon…. You’re right no one else can get it or has it… But I know the source, and I have several hundred pounds of fat nodules right now that you can have.
Sweet! If you don't have my address, shoot me an email to jackcrafty2@gmail.com
Jack, another great video man, I am also autistic which doesn’t help when trying to remember my diabetes injections and blood sugar levels etc, so I began keeping a time table of the order I was going to do things and recorded things I needed to remember, just thought that might work for you? Anyway thanks again and God bless
Yes, time tables do help.
Hi Patrick,
I've been watching your videos for a while.
I'm not a knapper but, at 63, thinking of giving it a try.
I think I enjoy your vids because I like watching you create something of beauty and utility from a formless stone. I also enjoy your monologues.
I think everyone is on the spectrum. Unfortunately some of us are unable to funtion well enough to survive on our own. My nephew is this way.
As far as getting less done in weeks when I feel great at the beginning, I think that for myself, I set my expectations higher so I don't meet those expectations and so feel I haven't done as much.
I would like to know your thoughts on "eccentric" pieces, such as the Mayan Seven Heads blade found at Copan.
Thanks for bringing me along on your journey.
GIVE IT A TRY! CAN'T HURT ANYTHING, ACCEPT YOUR HANDS HERE AND THERE...LOL...

I was an industrial mechanic for 40 years, bloody hands are par for the course.
Although cutting into scar tissue isn't something I strive to do.
How to produce long flakes anthology. 😢
If I had that rock, I could have made a 1” bird point, maybe.
Bravo.👏🏽
Finally figured it out. So you're actually David Gilmore that talks like Wes on purpose.
Too funny. 😂
Response to the comments---You can walk 100 yards in some areas like mine and the chert, all the same type geologically will change the way it looks and works, etc. That looks like a sub type of winterset chert from kansas and missouri but you can't tell just by looking or working it. If you want to be scientifically accurate you would need an isotope analysis to compare to the type you want to match up or know where it came from.
Well said. 👏🙂
Do you ever knap opal? It's expensive but the end result is awesome.👍
Common opal, yes. I haven't knapped the expensive stuff.
Heat cheat!! I tried some river rock. It just exploded.
Ouch
I sent you that rock I believe
Yes you did. Thanks Sal.
Hey what kinda rock is that 😂

Honestly I was looking for rainbows in that rock but alas it's chert.😂
It's a petrified rock that turned to stone😊

Have you ever knapped the black Texas chert that smells like oil when you break it?
Yes. I knapped some during a knap-in, but I haven't been able to get more. It knaps good, generally.
I have some that I can give you at the knap in if you will be there.
@@AsherWeems I won't be able to make it this year, unfortunately

Very similar. No oil smell, though, on this one.
I know what the that that is
