Stephane Sessegnon scored Sunderland's extra-time winner to secure a memorable FA Cup with Budweiser triumph in this Tees-Wear Fourth Round derby clash. Sunderland will now host Arsenal in a Fifth Round tie.
Championship side Middlesbrough gave as good as they got against the Premier League's form team and pushed Martin O'Neill's men all the way after coming back from a goal down.
Overall, Sunderland were probably good value for their win, however, and seemed set for victory after Jack Colback gave them the lead shortly before half-time with a great striker from the edge of the penalty area in the 42nd minute.
Middlesbrough bounced back, though, and equalised in impressive fashion in the 57th minute through Lukas Jutkiewicz. Curtis Main got the assist with a superb header to Jutkiewicz, who found the space to finish strongly past Mignolet with a headed effort of his own.
O'Neill said: "Middlesbrough did very well, but I felt we were better and I am delighted we won the game. It was a fantastic effort and how many times have I said that in the last two months or so? It was a fantastic Cup tie."
O'Neill was right as the Riverside rocked to a cracking soundtrack of two sets of passionate fans as the match went into extra-time.
But it was as good as over once Sessegnon struck in the 113th minute. The Benin international drove strongly into the area and was fortunate when the ball came back to him, allowing him to finish with a first time low right foot shot.

"it was a much more even game as the scoreline suggested" it was 1-1 when he said that...
with all the arguments there is one thing we can agree on : Those commentators were shit !
@Shane2352 You still sing if you're 1-0 down, and my mates forced me to go, why not had the money something to do for the night.
Lets be honest, the only reason they played so well against us is cause it was their cup final and they actually thought it was a derby
Commentators have got to be the worst commentators ever. They don't sound very enthusiastic at all. I've seen more enthusiasm come from a rock.
Possibly the most boring commentators i have ever heard.
@smoggyben Fighting relegation? Erm were 8th..youse had a short spell first half where you played well but bar that it was a shite game from both teams. We played shite but still won, which is decent.
@acejacko23 It's always nice to see us in the Premier League as well, also, you sold more tickets for this match then usual, you only came to see the Sunderland.
what the fuck are the commentators on
Commentators are beyond boring.
@mikey0108 Results that count. We beat you away from home, and we played shite so that shows you how poor youse were. We are in the Premier League top 8 and sitting in the Last 16 of the FA Cup. I think your last win was against Shrewsbury.
Lucky lucky lucky Mackem bastards! Middlesbrough deserved way way more than what they came out with. We took sunderland to pieces! Proud to be a boro fan!!
@timtom099 I was unfortunate not to get a ticket to the match, and you didn't deserve to get beat, neither did way, in a fair world it should have went to penalties but that's football at the end of the day. Although I was watching the match at the pub and the our fans didn't seem exactly quiet.
@TheSafc96 we were bouncing all night long, 28,000 of 35,000 is pretty good attendance for midweek match, you didnt sell out your stadium and cant remember the last time you did, anyone 28,000 isnt bad for a small town, one Europe cup final, league cup, what have yo done in the last 10 years? nothing come back when ya win something
@TheSafc96 listen to comentary dont need to i was at the match, sunderland were livey for the first 20 mins and then when they scored, but we should have 1-1 straight away, McMahon cleared off the line less than a minute later, we had you rattled going into half time, and all the way through the 2nd half up until your goal we out sang, boro fans didnt stop singing, Sunderland however only sing when there winning, im sure any honest sunderland fan will tell you they were worried after we scored
There is 1 boro fan
@theeeannoyingguy Wait a second, why were you at a Middlesborough game if you are not a supporter of the club? And fair enough the young lads worked their arses off to put up a good fight, but evidently... we still beat you. One more thing, you say we were only singing when we were winning, but according to you the boro fans were singing 'on there own when they were 1-0 down'? Explain.
@WayneThompson93 The only set of fans I know to be happy singing about child abuse as if it`s acceptable, puts you well and trully in the Gary Glitter camp.
A derby you disrespect but dare not lose.
Lucky bastards
took you 2 legs and extra time to beat us. If you perform like that in the prem you should be fighting relegation.
im a boro fan, i think we mean more to sunderland than they do to us to be honest. im not fussed about sunderland because i dont see them as a threat, never have to be honest as they have been in boros shadow for so long. i only class boro derby games to be against newcastle because at least they challenge for trophys like we do. although i have a lot more respect for sunderland fans than newcastle fans. whoever won last nite would have got a hiding off arsenal in round 5 anyway. UTB
@OsKSniping Don't let them know that though mate, they actually think they're a good team
@Shane2352 9 academy players on the pitch at the end of the game. held you to extra time in a replay, we are championship you are premiership. Who said you're good?
@BackFromNowere I enjoyed the game tbh we played well considering. good luck against arsenal
@No1MackemFtm still not as good as emile ''the great'' heskey
@TheSafc96 couldnt care less about the cup,ur getting knocked out nxt round any way
great effort lads best man for boro - tony mcmahon and for sunderland - phil bardsley
Thats the one lads, now to beat the Arsenal, come on Sunderland!
second. i have no life
@iShizzleHD is that all you got
should have let Tarmo Kink play.
@No1MackemFtm He's not at Barcelona tho? :$
hưng đây
nice
Good game
@OsKSniping
@No1MackemFtm K.
great game, Middlesbrough silenced the mackems for the whole game, 4200 of them said nout unless they were winning and got a lucky goal to win,
