Fantastic. At 84 I'm 55 years doing painting and drywall small contractor. I have been thinking of making birdhouses for some time. I have all the equipment. Thank you for posting this.
John, hello & thank you for the great comment! You’ll have to post a photograph or two of some bird houses that you make. Would be great to see them - most excellent, thanks! Trav
@@OutdoorswithTrav I have made about 5. Kept two. I will take pictures and figure how to send them to you. I had to build them much deeper. The raccoons ate the birds and the eggs. The baby birds that were just ready to leave their nest, racoon or cat slaughtered them in the middle of the night. The screaming birds right outside our window is still with me. One birdhouse I placed a baffle on the inside above the nest just under the opening hole. Racoon or a cat cannot reach in and bend their arm and reach the nest. Had this last one two years. No more raiding. Blue bird family returns two times a year to lay their 4 eggs. homebrewer7@gmail.com
Kandilyn Brown, Thank you for the comment & the kind words! Glad that you like the use of salvaged materials as well as the variety of my bird houses. Thank you for watching Outdoors with Trav =)
This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "bird house plans for free" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Daniliana Birdfly Babar - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my co-worker got amazing results with it.
That’s pretty cool; I like the rustic look 👀 to, so the wife brings home a couple of love birds home. Next thing You know I have 50 birds . I found this book shelf, 4’ + 4’ I envisioned a hotel 🏨 , made little boxes with 4” ledges they can stand on , plus serves as a handle to pull em out to clean! Came out pretty cool I was impressed with my self!
On my first attempt at building a birdhouse I made a hole too big. Three days after putting it in the garden I found my next door neighbours cat has got his head stuck in it and hung itself
Man, that’s rough. Sounds like curiosity indeed killed the cat. Some bird houses such as American kestrel boxes & wood duck nest boxes require a bigger entrance hole to accommodate larger body size. Typically though they are set high atop a metal pole so as to minimize predation.
Great way to rid the neighborhood of cats...what size hole did you use to hang the cat? We have an abundance of sparrows here, so we make the hole just 1" and it seems to keep the sparrows out, but not the chickadees.
I made one with the hole too big and now a little red squirrel lives in it which is fine. They come from where I live but the gray squirrels aren’t they are pests.

Here's several ideas for constructing birdhouses: Allow plenty time. Use ready made boat templates. (I discovered about these and more from Aviary magic method website )
This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "easy steps to build a birdhouse" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Daniliana Birdfly Babar - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy got amazing success with it.
That is nice. I am from Europe but now in Australia. Here we are far behind in birdhouses because some of them are pests and destroy cropps. I like it in the gardens and they give me notice the snow is there or come and have a swim. It is priceless but some people will never understand this joy!
The main reason I don’t put perches on my bird houses is because invasive species such as house sparrows seem to prefer perches. Whereas native species such as swallows, wrens & bluebirds seem to simply prefer a hole without a perch. My goal is to attract native species of nesting birds.
Probably a good rule of thumb would be to mount your birdhouse at eye level or higher in order to avoid predators such as house cats, snakes & raccoons. Remember that you can also reduce predation by using physical barriers such as metal flashing wrapped around the supporting tree/post or attaching it beneath in the shape of a cone.
Good question - Yes, birds do use the tall birdhouse. They are not too concerned about the looks of a birdhouse. The design of the birdhouse & the beauty of the birds themselves is for us as people to enjoy =)

I bought a bird house at an Estate sale, like the hanging stile bird house. I cleaned it. I'm confused on how to hang it. No wires.

I noticed that there is no 'porch" or perch on the birdhouses any reason ?

How high do they need to be hung so that birds will nest in them?
