Shooting seagulls: how Natural England has got it wrong

  • Natural England is not giving out gull licences this year or last. As a result, gulls are eating more than usual numbers of rare groundnesting birds, they are nesting in commercials buildings and causing a fire risk, and it's going to be a bumper summer for them attacking seaside holidaymakers.

      A fking flying rat that is.
      One morning I took a shower and got ready for an appointment and wore a nice fit.
      When I was walking all of a sudden something hard hit me and I thought I got clocked by a rock. Looked up and this fucking rat was laughing at me. It was standing ontop of a lightpost and took a shit on me and rocked my shit. I’ve never wanted to delete an entire species more than in that single moment when it was just staring at me laughing. Ever since then, I’ve done everything to make life tougher for seagulls.

    We had the same issue here in Denmark some years ago. The hunting community wanted to legalise suppressor/silencers for firearms. The nature protection groups wanted something in return.
    They got a specific ban on .50BMG and no more hunting season for gulls.. After 3 or 4 years, they had to open up for shooting gulls again, as they take a lot of eggs and young birds from other birds, and some urban areas they life in large numbers. Their constant noise and escrements are a health hazard.

      @@bigglesbiggles4999 I agree with most of that. The only thing I would question is that nature isnt really left to it's own devices because we are constantly meddling in it and changing the playing field for species, but I guess you could argue that we are part of nature too and whatever changes we drive then that is "natural" too.
      On the topic of a lust for killing (talking about animals, not humans ofcourse), I think a lot of humans have an innate ability to kill. Harsh as that sounds but humans have evolved by killing to survive, both killing animals that would predate them and killing for food. I'm not sure people like or enjoy it but I think they are almost hardwired to do it. I guess it comes naturally for some perhaps.

      Coastal cliffs are their habitat.
      The reason they are moving inland is for easy pickings from human activity.
      The demise of the British fishing industry after the EU factory ships took over the water around our coast, meant no trawlers, no food, for the gulls.
      So they moved inland and have successfully
      adapted to life ashore, scavenging like rats.
      A pair of gulls nesting on a rooftop opposite to my house, have already reared two chicks and are breeding again, this pair have nested in this spot for three years, and have successfully reared eight young.
      They will eat anything that moves.
      They even mimic the Blackbird's, rapid stomping on the ground to catch worms.
      And they defecate indiscriminately in flight,
      fouling buildings, cars, and sometimes people, myself included.

BASC spent a million pounds on a media centre, WHY?? anyone seen any production from that? Fieldsports Britain channel is more effective at bringing issues to the shooting public than most organisations. The SGA are talking about a political party, this is what is needed in a UK basis. I think Scotland will have very limited sporting opportunities if indeed any within 10 years so action is needed sooner rather than later.

    • @head-Keeper
      @head-Keeper 4 роки тому +3

      @ Biggles Biggles , I am real, living in the real World not the blindfolded one you inhabit. Muirburn has shown positive effects on peat regeneration and carbon storage, offers a fire stop protection to the increasing risk of wild fires and a positive effect on biodiversity, gives Scotland its famous purple heather landscape which is worldly famous, leave it to nature or RSPB and the like, it will turn to rank grasses.
      Flooding occurs when local authorities fail to manage waterways by not dredging rivers that were previously dredged. Building housing stock on flood plains. Why do you think there is more flooding now? Muirburn has been practiced for over 100 years.
      Lead is toxic, no argument there, stayed in a cottage with lead piping for over 40 years with no effect but where are the thousands of corpses that must die of lead poisoning every year, I ‘m sure if the evidence was there it would be on the news. Try taking a walk over a grouse moor where you will see more wildlife, including more successful fledging of hen harrier chicks than on un-keepered land.

    • @bigglesbiggles4999
      @bigglesbiggles4999 4 роки тому +1

      @@head-Keeper your right and your wrong .....first of all rivers have rarely been dredged and when they have its been for navigation purposes, rivers naturally scour, your right about regenerated Heather creates fire stops and water and carbon retention, but Heather burning leaves vast acreages were water run off and erosion of moorland then becomes exacerbated......and I spend a lot of my free time up on the moors, so I am very much aware of the shoots who clearly do everything they can to undermine the raptor population Hen harriers are now at their lowest ever population.i am aware that there are good keepers but there are many with unscrupulous backgrounds , and the moorland we have now is not a natural habitat as beautiful as it is ...lead poisoning might not in your mind be effecting you ....but it has been proven that swans geese and dabbling ducks who have ingested it are poisoned, hence the reason it was banned on the marshes in the USA, and that stance is now being adopted over here and the continent....ohhhb I do know my stuff and I am no left wing crackpot

    • @head-Keeper
      @head-Keeper 4 роки тому +2

      @ Biggles Biggles Gamekeeping has changed immensely over the decades, where every hooked beak was an enemy they are to a great extent tolerated and even provided with substituted feeding to reduce grouse predation, I agree entirely with your assumption that there are some rotten apples in the barrel but self governing and the threat of jail, loss of employment, home and reputation is a big stick to use. The loss of grouse will be the end of heather moorland in the UK, who else would pay to maintain it? The only natural habitat left in Scotland is the west coast mountain ranges where there is not a great number of grouse. The left (since you brought it up) preys on anthropomorphic emotion, mostly without scientific credibility, is a powerful enemy of not only fieldsports but the very wildlife it purports to protect as witnessed by the general licence debacle. How many songbirds etc were killed when control was halted. The lives of passerines are undoubtably less attractive to the coffers of the RSPB than birds of prey. By the way lead shot has been banned over marsh land and waterways in the Uk for some years now. We will not agree but it was an interesting debate while it lasted, you will have to excuse me I have conservation work to complete.

    One type of person is entirely missing from the payroll of Natural(?) England - the British Countryman. Apparently, they have a staff of about 2,000 in various offices around our country. The vast majority are of an urban, Leftish, Greenish persuasion who just about squeaked a 2:2 in a former Polytechnic now called a 'University(?)' in 'Environmental Studies' or a similar non - subject. This qualification makes them utterly unemployable - except in Quangoes like NE, the Environment Agency and the National Trust or phony 'Charities' like the RSPB and RSPCA. Once recruited, the are given a very expensive hi-viz jacket and one of those ID tags to hang round the necks, and the title of a something-or-other 'Officer'! With this title comes vast and unappealable power over people with far more knowledge than themselves, which is a very scary scenario. In the old Soviet Empire in East Europe. they would have been called Commissars. David Cameron promised to have a 'Bonfire of the Quangos' but apparently couldn't find any matches..... The answer is really so simple with Blackbacks, Herrings and Cormorants - below Mean High Water mark, they're fully protected, above it, take as many as you like whenever you like. Far too simple, I suppose....

      @@joncox9098 and if they do, so what? ...you eat lamb and other animals I guess...they just don't have the luxury of walking out with a gun or popping down the supermarket....are the wild indigenous animals of this and other countries not afforded the right to live as they have evolved...and truthfully just how many leverets have you seen killed by kites and Buzzards ?

    Any excuse to kill an animal for fun and prove you are a "real man". The problem here in Cornwall is the stupid emmets who think it is clever to feed the gulls inspite of the signs sayind don't feed the gulls.

      It’s not just emmets Graham, I know of plenty of local old folk who feed them up on the Reservations - thereby giving them the food security needed for them to colonise the estates on the outskirts of many of our towns! No different are the locals who allow their cats to roam at night or dogs whilst out ranging during the day in nesting season. I used to enjoy pigeon, a very fine meat indeed - it made me a real man, growing up and realising where my food really came from!

    My dick neighbour has been feeding seagulls from his front door for the past 3 years. A majority of our neighbourhood has asked him to stop, and I have personally had a government body visit him to ask him to stop. He continues. They arrive at 7am and incessantly squawk until around sundown. Doing my f*cking head in…

    We live miles from any sea to the South of Glasgow City and I have just had a quote to respray my car, damaged from seagull poop, that was an eye watering £500.00. Who should be paying for this. Forget re-wilding the greenbelts. The seagulls have taken over the suburbs. Yikes...!!!

      We as shooters are really really up against it ..The BBC,Wild Justice,RSPB etc etc and of course the brain washed public who hang on everything the fore mentioned tell them as they are not allowed to see what really goes on and amongst other things are brain washed into thinking many bird species are in decline mainly to habitat loss which is true in part but equally true is predation by birds Packham etc are trying to protect by getting them protection from trapping and shooting..Pure unadulterated hypocrisy by the so called 'conservationists'!
