- In this episode, we continue gathering dirt for our raised beds. We also experience the last snow of the year, and have some interesting wild animal encounters at the cabin. We try out a new mortar technique involving putting nails between the logs to help hold the mortar in place and prevent it from cracking, which our previous chinking was doing. The test was successful so we continue chinking two sides of the cabin. We also carry up more metal roofing to complete the porch roof as well as the woodshed roof.
Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). Most of the channels that i've watched have used wire lath with mortar chinking. The stuff Shawn James used came in a bucket, but if I remember it was costly.

Use a natural rope pushed into the seems between the logs inside and out covered by pitch. This allows for expansion/contraction as well as waterproofing/insulation. Any mortar you use, despite all efforts, over time will crack! (You can however use modern specialty products made just for chinking that contain acrylics that allow for expansion/contraction) but regular mortar, regardless of the precautions taken, will crack over time.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure there's a silicone/rubber like substance you can use thats specifically made for chinking? Though I think they want to use something more natural?? However, having to drive all of those tiny nails in, would make my brain explode!
I still think this the prettiest log cabin I have ever seen. Great job.

Thanks Jeff! The cabin does get pretty hot when we have good fire going, so we usually keep the fire smaller, or crack some windows.
You might consider using great stuff / Flex seal / or some other expanding foam, then paint it a color that looks natural. This way it expands into the crevices for the best seal and won’t crack.

The expansion and contraction is different between the 2 types of materials (logs and mortar). The mortar will always crack and need replaced. The log home industry would be good to consult on the various materials they've spent a lot of money on to research.

If I might make some suggestions for your consideration: flashing on the roof where your porch roof meets the house and battens for the board wall on the front porch. My dad worked on steam boilers at the hospital and when they did repairs they used boncrete or wood glue in the motar. I saw it and dis a patch at home where there was a low spot . It never let go in 30 years.
I think fibreglass chopped up would be the go. I see step treads at the station with it in. Very strong

You can also add Fiberglass to the concrete to keep it from cracking & falling out. :)
Porcupine are notorious for eating areas with hand salt contact.

We thought about synthetic chinking, but it's about 10x the price. We're too frugal for that haha

For future reference...do your mortar before you stain your logs that will also help in the mortar adhering to the logs .

Not for now! We thought of planting some plants under the roof to not waste the water, but there’s barely any soil there so we’d have to build some raised beds. Anyways, we might end up collecting the water in the future, if we need too :)

As for the porch, it should!! Nick designed it to be able to resist the load of more than our average snowfall. But if we ever get worried, we’ll go on top and take it out :)

The cement looks much better. I think you should add more water to the mixture, and maybe sprinkle some water, the day after to add some moisture and prevent creaks. As always it amaze me how you two work together.

Why not squeeze weather-resistant silicone between the logs? Why grout that crumbles out again when the trunks dry?
The logs are already dry, so there won't be too much of an issue on that front. We could have used synthetic chinkig, but it's about 10x the price! We're too frugal for that haha
@ : Well, since I'm German and looking a little further into the future, I know that wood that absorbs and releases moisture as it dries will shrink and expand in proportion to its size. From this I draw my conclusions and would rather invest a few euros , in your case dollars , to have a better result and cost less in the future if you have to do it again .

Mortar with wood usually doesn’t work for a long period. It will eventually fall, the silica % in the cement doesn’t bond well with wood.

You should try using hardware cloth works best cut narrow strips fold in half roofing nails in place works great use been years still hold tight. The size is 1/4 inch .

What I suggest is that you people now should take up bigger log houses. Such as one/ two bed room house with attached bath room and also closet alongwith corridor etc. That is bigger size log home. Think over it.

At first, I look at what and how you do... very interesting!
Watched the previous video and this one and you are making the same mistake. The tree grows larger at high humidity, and becomes smaller as it dries out. the fact that you cover the cracks with cement is not good, because the cement will spill out later. How about you take a sealant that can withstand frost and heat and when it hardens it will be like rubber, it will be better.
As for your garden... some plants don't do well in acidic soil. land with conifers is impossible for them. Be careful ;)
When there is not a lot of water, it is better to cover the ground with a thick layer of mulch, then the moisture does not evaporate and later the mulch becomes dry!;)

Подивився попереднє відео та це і ви робите одну й ту саму помилку. Дерево при високій вологості стає більше, поли просихає стає меньше. те що ви цементом замазуєте щілини не добре, бо цемент буде висипатись згодом. Як що Ви візьмете Герметик який витримує мороз та жару і при застигані буде як резина, буде краще.
Щодо вашого городу... деякі рослини погано себе почувають в кислій землі. для них неможна землю з хвойними. Будьте уважуі;)
Коли не дуже багато води, краще землю завривати товстим слоєм мульчі, тоді волога не випаровується та згодом мульча становиться добевом!;)
Mortar has been used to fill the gaps in log cabins for centuries, so we're not too worried about it. The synthetic sealants are also way more expensive!
So far our garden is growing well, hopefully it stays that way!
And good point, we covered the raised beds with wood shavings

Chinking has been done for hundreds of thousands of years and some are still ok to this day. Education and knowledge is a wonderful thing. Trees do not grow once they die.

Nick and Maëla, why doesn't your log cabin have a storage cellar, why does your log cabin not have four windows in the attic, but only three windows, what do you two do if a bear wants to get into your log cabin, I'm worried, I haven't the impression that your log cabin is not only beautiful and wonderful, but also protected against intrusion by grizzly bears, I always need a bear-proof room downstairs and a bear-proof balcony upstairs to be safe from bear attacks in an emergency.
Where they are there is no grizzly...
But black bear and usuly they stay away from humain

@ lime doesn't crack, like cement and allows to breathe through, which is necessary.
Loved the episode as usual, but have to admit that seeing you take away the first batch of chinking scared me a bit.
It looked to easy to peel it off. I think it shouldn't be like that. Makes me wonder if the nails will make much of a difference even.
Is it possible that the treatment that you gave to outside of the cabine to give it the yellowish-brown color somehow contributes to the chinking not much gluing to the timber? What would the chinking do to untreated dry wood? Would it stick much better?
I hope I'm not raising unnecessary questions and make you worry over nothing, but I'd hate to see you finish the whole cabin only to find out that this will not last.
Don’t worry, we thought the same thing!! And we don’t know if it would make a difference on untreated wood, we sadly didn’t try it before applying the stain.. the nails, thankfully, keep it in place very nicely!! We were also surprised to see big chunks of the mortar fall out, but now that the nails are in place, it’s solid :)

Spray the logs with water, the logs draw the moisture out of the mortor which makes it dry too fast which causes cracking.
logs are already sealed.
Have two thought about having your rain water tested. Without not having any filtering system I don't think it would be a good idea.
We do use a filter system between the pump and the faucet! We showed the install of it a few episodes ago :)
Porcupines are very distructive,,they will chew anything made of wood,,Gonna have to screen in the bottom of your cabin,,

Yeah we had one in our sugar shack and he ate almost a whole shelf ahaha! We scared him twice now and haven’t seen him again for the last 2/3 weeks! But we’ll have to keep an eye out for sure

I would think you would want nails in upper log as well. Or use strips of wire lathe nailed to both logs.

Those porcupines will do major damage to your cabin, good luck keeping them at bay.
Why did you not do flashing against the house side?
We don't think it's too necessary. Our roof overhangs by 2ft, so rain and snow will likely never hit the wall. Plus the building surplus store nearby didn't have them in stock 😂
