To answer your question 'why not just get a husky or a Ktm supermoto?' ...a lot of people can't afford a proper factory setup supermoto. I think it's awesome to convert a dirt bike to a street setup.

The reason that often 125 or 250 2 stroke or 4 stroke 450 motocross bikes are turned into a supermoto, is that these bikes designed for competition have so much more power compared to street designed factory supermotos. So it makes it so easy to wheelie and do stunts, on which supermotos are originally meant to.

Oil changes are VERY frequent but dirt bike are just as reliable as factory supermotos. Long periods of high rpm won't hurt them they are built to bounce off the rev limiter frequently. Just look at the wr450f it is just a slightly tuned down yz450f with a wide ratio transmission. The wr is used as a sumo a lot and you don't hear about reliability problems.
Put 20k miles on one top end of a dirtbike.... .... ....
I just bought a wr250r converted x. He gave me everything down to the kick stand to convert it back. I love the back roads turing feels over my 1299s but this is a refreshing throwback to when I thought a ninja 250 was the bees knees... ButI'm gonna put the dirt rims on to try out that life. I'm lucky to feel it out with one bargan purchase.

Dual sport helmets are the shit. I wear one no matter if I am on my Goldwing, my DR, or by best bud's cruiser.
You know that it's not ruining the when people swich rims and tyres. It isn't permanent, if the rider feels like they can swich the wheels and go offroad, also you don't have to get 2 helmets if you do.

To reason number 5, because its fun to ride an MX bike on the road, super narrow and light. Just need to swap the sprocket and I havent had any oil problems. The street tires are only necessary if you plan on DIGGING into turns on the road which you shouldn't do anyway. I'm trying to sell mine right now :p

You can't get the KTM 690 SMC R in North America Unless you know something I don't ? I'm just going to get a 701 for next season but would rather the KTM just for the look of it.

Lol I have both a sport bike and a super moto, I enjoy both, but I have so Much more fun on my super moto, just so much lighter and flickable . also I've had my sport bike for 7 years and people just look at it as a sport bike and don't seem to care much, on my super moto everywhere I go people compliment it and talk to me about it.

Motocross helmets are great because they are much more ventilated, look awesome and you can carry a clear lens for goggles and it's a lot easier then carrying a clear visor

Cycle cruza love the comments..but i think the reason supermoto riders wear dirt bike helmets is because they already have a dirt helmet...i could be wrong...hummm but I bet many many supermoto riders have a dirt bike as well...as a long time dirt rider the supermoto is appealing to us...just my two cent's

If you ever get tired of going through knobby tires in the rear I run shinko 705's( www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shinko-705-dual-sport-tires ) on my rear and it makes it so I can get way lower in the corners without sacrificing anything offroad other than in mud. I also get 9k out of it so its a great buy for 60 bucks. If you have the extra loot it's even better with a spare knobby assembled rim to make switchout even easier for trail days.

On number one I gotta say you don't see both sides of the subject. There are alottt of dirt bikes out there and some of them make really good street bikes (for people who are serious about riding) and I love the 701 but all factory supermotos are heavy and pretty soft. And race style enduro bikes like like wr450f and 450exc have wide geared trans and lighting stators elec start etc. The maintenance is not bad especially on wr450s and of course they have raw 450 power that no other type of motor has and is down 70lbs on the other bikes listed, so for those who want to rip its the only way to go

Supermoto still gets hella lean angle, as long as you know how to throw it around. As long as nobody makes a 2 stroke sumo I'm good. I'd kill myself on one of those.

aitiotia have you never ridden a 450 motocross bike ? they're the same as 2 strokes when it comes to mashing the throttle especially on road it will instantly come up
Mike Pence The torque of a 250 two stroke is still a bit more than a 450. I've ridden both a lot and the instant power of a two stroke is very nice. Along with it being lighter since it's only a 250.

I have cr 250 wich i converted to supermoto :D yes its pretty sad to convert it :( and its actually terrible to ride in streets in high speeds... in low speed stunting its fcking perfect i love it! And yes ur right also that it doesnt like if.u go high rpm for long time, it wants u to go high rpm and then shut down the gas, thats how it is planned to work. Well maintenance... its not even bad, in RACE CONDITITIONS honda manual tolds u to change oil every 7h. I change oil every about 20h :D maintenance is not a problem
Once you start doing 70mph + the sumo helmet starts to want to fly away, with your head. Always lifts from wind force.
You must have missed my Suomy MX tourer helmet review, I use this helmet to ride with my cbr1000rr, it can take triple digit speeds with zero issues, the only DS helmet that can that I have tried over the years.
