I teach a dozen silkworms we have at home to raise children and see their beautiful process.
Raising silkworms, which has its origin in an ancient profession, currently shared by many people as a hobby.
At school I had my first contact with silkworms, learning about the biological processes of these insects.
Years later I wanted to repeat the experience with what, in 2009, I started to breed again, finding that there was a variety of breeds of silkworms and a culture that is strongly related to our history.
Silkworms go through different stages of life, differentiated phases of seedlings, where they develop their bodies and increasing its size to finally make the metamorphosis and reach adulthood, with a single goal: reproduction.
In total, Bombyx mori passes through 5 stages of life (more adult), with 4 moulting stages having two phases inside the chrysalis.
1st Ages.
Depending on the geographical location, once past winter, the eggs of silkworms begin to hatch, and the larvae begin to feed and grow. With many hairs, color is becoming clearer as increase in size.
1st moulting. Entrance to the second age.
Les has time, and after about 6-7 days since they were born, they enter a state of "dream", which raise their heads, stop eating and stand still. I call them state mummy :)
You can clearly see what they look like when the time comes. The skin covers almost completely the mouth, and have a slightly wrinkled appearance. The head looks swollen, and you can see a dark area near the mouth. That will be his new jaw.

2nd Age.

5th Age.

Eventually, the larva changes to a lighter color, with pink tints in the lower area, giving a somewhat flabby appearance and ejects a soft liquid, excrement green or brown. It is not a sign that you are sick, it's just the way to start spinning the silk cocoon.

5th and 6th moulting. Entrance to the adult stage.
