Brother ADS-1700W Scanner Setup and Black Bar Troubleshooting

I was handed this Brother ADS-1700W scanner when leaving work yesterday. There was a black bar that appeared across the page once it was scanned. I, unfortunately, could not correct the black bar issue. It's definitely a bad unit.

that cable on the end plugged into the scanner is called a USB micro-b (either 2.0 or 3.0 version - 3.0 is the newest and fastest data transfer release version and these are typically found associated with the small portable hard drives) and it does not come with the scanner, you have to buy it, so no they did not lose it
