A big problem I see with Netflix is they are focusing on quantity over quality. They keep throwing out shows to build up the library but most of it isn't enjoyable.

Let alone even watchable. A majority of those shows are terribly unwatchable
I really enjoyed Netflix originals but they always eventually go downhill. I was so dissapointed with the mess of Riverdale.

I feel like the two MAJOR factors are
1. They constantly take off ALLLLL the good content. It’s now a well-known joke/thing that if you like a show too much on Netflix they will take it off or cancel it. It just leads to frustration and wanting to go somewhere eles
2. Increasing pricing with little to none of anything to show for it, just makes the company come off as greedy. Wanting more BILLIONS then they already have.
That isn't their fault. The owners of those IPs are starting their own streaming services. Netflix was very innovative with their service it was just a matter of time before everyone else hopped on. The problem was Netflix had other people's IPs not their own
They don’t just “take off alllllll the good shows” you dork. They take them off when they no longer own the rights to them. Can you even fathom how much money it costs to obtain the rights to a television series for a lifetime? Lol

I’d cancel my subscription cause I’m hardly ever on it due to school but my family relies on me because they watch it. But think about, why would me, my dad and mom, sister pay for three separate subscriptions when only one person can pay for it in a single household. Netflix is after their money, and yea if you can get $60 bucks from a household opposed to only $20 makes sense for them. But nah, ain’t nobody going to continue with that if they ever decide to raise prices to meet their own goals while taking off shows we like and limiting how many people can watch
@@BobbyLightDoYouRight they cancel or take too long to upload new episodes or seasons of their own shoes for example the blood of zues came out 2019 and it’s 2022 and I haven’t seen anything about it been canceled but it is taking way too long
I've always noticed that on the Netflix auto fill section for the "search" option, most of the time it pops up the movie/show I want but it's not even on the platform. I always found that to be so stupid and unnecessary.
that's because the movie is not available in your country, you might wanna use a VPN, change your virtual location to Mexico or Japan and you'll get a even bigger library

My issue with Netflix is simple: Netflix cancels the overwhelming majority of their shows, so it's extremely common for shows to never get proper endings. Why bother with new ones when there's a pretty solid chance that they'll never get any real sort of resolution? It just feels pointless to even try caring nowadays.
Exclusives and original content are an important part of ANY service. A service failing on that front is bound to lead to people jumping ship at some point.

It would be smarter for them to focus on limited series where there is an ending and it is all filmed before it's ever released. Nickelodeon and Disney for the most part like to limit their live action shows to four seasons and most of them got proper endings at least lol.
And that is so frustrating because one of the selling points for Netflix used to be that they would give endings to shows cancelled on networks.
That's more on the viewers than anything. Netflix is a business, if they spend insane amounts of money on a show and only a small % of users watch it then it would be dumb of them to keep making that show over another show that may land better. Look at stranger things, they will milk popular shows as long as they can.
The big issue killing Netflix: Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu+, Paramount+ and Peacock. In short, the big media companies are now reserving streaming rights to many movies and TV shows to their own services, not to Netflix.
Add in Amazon Prime as another competitor.
Just what I was about to say. The main reason you subscribed to Netflix in the first place was because it had all your favorites in one place and it was easy to access. Nowadays it's all just original content nobody has heard of or cares about.

The market is definitely oversaturated. The average person's pockets are not that deep to be subscribed to all of them either! And they wanna cry about password sharing.
It was probably 5-6 years ago I just said to my wife, “you know… there really is nothing worth watching on Netflix.” We got rid of it and we never regretted it.
Subscribers are a lot smarter than they give them credit for. People will just watch the shows they like and then unsubscribe. They won't stick around if they keep canceling the shows people like, plus if that becomes a trend people won't wanna get invested in their new shows.
Some of these streaming services can't retain the subscribers for very long.
Yeah i think we’re starting to see the downside of releasing content all at once. The consumer binge-watches and then unsubscribes ‘till the next viral show pops up then they resubscribe. Disney has it right with releasing episodes one week at a time then immediately when that show is over putting out a new show with the same format. It keeps you locked in to the subscription.
You think a customer size of Netflix that would be a big enough number to convince us that we're not a bunch of stinky lab rats waiting to be tested on.

Disney plus was a huge punch in the Gut for Netflix. Disney is such a powerful brand especially for families. And with a much more reasonable subscription cost, I think more people will dump Netflix, but families are more likely to keep their Disney plus subscription going.

I get the Disney Bundle (Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus) for free with Verizon. That makss it pretty easy to keep those services compared to Netflix/HBO Max/Paramount Plus and I use them all. The Disney Bundle is $14/month (again, I get it for free). Once I can't share my mom's Netflix account, that will be the end of using it.
The people who run Disney are terrible people. It's unfortunate because Disney was always my favorite. They also treat their stars like trash when they are done with them.

This is the part I mentioned. Netflix has been confusing to navigate for years! That's the main reason I barely watch anything on there. Not to mention everything I see when I first log on looks boring and uninteresting.
And they never should've gotten rid of letting people rate content. After Amy Schumer's special got spammed (because it was actually also really bad) it really messed up any reputability they had in terms of in-house content.

There's only one thing for me: If they hadn't started canceling all their best content before the stories ended, I wouldn't even be considering canceling. But too many great shows have left me with only sadness and it's all their fault for not committing.
Prime example for me, Santa Clarita Diet. One of the most unique stories ever, with a great cast.

I think the bigger problem is lack of good shows. In the past they had a huge library. Not so much right now. I think most streaming sites are bound of run of steam unless they have good creators keep making original content
I always knew that Netflix was on the decline, ever since other companies started making their own streaming services. I low-key miss being able to watch everything in one basket.

I high-key miss it. Not everyone is wealthy enough to have multiple streaming service bills every month. I'm certainly not. I'm done with all of them honestly.
Games are also heading this way, one day Playstation and Xbox will just be a service, new games won't have preorders cuz you won't be buying them nor owning them, you will just pay every month to access a feeling library of games. Which is cool til it isn't.
I think the artificial gain from Covid was a big factor initially. Then some left that didn't really need it. Americans are sensitive with change, especially if something is "leaving" so losing the password sharing, would be big. But ability to have it on so many screens opened the door to families sharing.
They have already in the past split 2 screen and 5 screen subscriptions I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a cheaper 2 screen and you pay more by the screen after that

It's not an American thing, mankind as a whole hates losing things more than they like gaining things. It's called Loss Aversion.
I agree, content is also a big problem. It seems like Netflix is prioritizing their own shows more than licensed movies from other studios. I have a Netflix subscription and I'm inclined to cancel it because I prefer movies over long shows. And because more studios like HBO, Disney and Warner Bros are opening their own streaming platforms with their own movies, its starting to seem like using those is a better option.
I feel like streaming is hitting a self-inflicted bubble. Streaming is firmly entrenched in society, so it's never going to go through a "burst", but I think it's reaching peak growth and may retract some. Oversaturation has hit the market like a ton of bricks, there is way too many services that each one has become largely a piecemeal offering rather than a great catchall value as it once did in the days when Netflix and Hulu were the only games in town.
Peacock, Discovery+, Paramount+, Prime Video, Apple TV+, AMC+, CNN+, FuboTV. Did we really need all of these?
This right here is the reason. Imagine subscribing to all of these, that'd be nearly $100 each month and streaming was supposed to be cheaper hence people left cable but now with every media company having it's own streaming platform, it's just too many. Wouldn't surprise me if people went back to illegal streams and pirate bays.

The idea that they're "not getting paid" for password sharing is BS. They literally have different pricing tiers based on the amount of simultaneous screens you can use. This lie, and the attack on their customer base, is their real fundamental issue.

@@middleagebrotips3454 I see what they "want" as irrelevant information. I'm paying for four screens, it shouldn't and doesn't matter where those screens are.
They "claim" they're missing out on revenue by not limiting access, but they've structured it by screen count on purpose to account for sharing, which is why they charge more for more of them. Suddenly claiming that it should be limited to household is their problem, not mine. That's not what the agreement has been, and they've even encouraged sharing in the past. They're just trying to squeeze their customer base by describing them as essentially "stealing".
Changing the structure changes the value, which means all 200 million+ subscribers now either have to choose to keep paying for less access, reduces their screen count(costing Netflix money), or cancel entirely(costing Netflix money).
Between that issue, and treating their current subscribers as if they were thieves, they'll lose more revenue than they can ever hope to gain by making the change.

If a bunch of single people live in a home, they each aren’t going to separately pay for every streaming! Each one will pay for a different service and share the password!
Same for families? Who can afford to pay for all of these services? Should I have to pay extra if I invite a friend over to watch or have a watch party? Where does thus stop?
They are def barking up the wrong tree and pissing on their customers. If you have a service that allows 4 accounts, the assumption HAD to be that family households would share with each other.

I am very sorry if offend anyone, but most of the people I know in the Middle East left Netflix because they overselling the “gay” issue making gays part of every show. One comedian made a joke that if Netflix were to broadcast football, they’ll force players to have sex in the intermission😂😂😂😂. Everybody expected the fall of Netflix since Disney and others aren’t yet in the area. Local streamers made so much money in simple shows as people are feeling offended by Netflix disrespect to family and children. Netflix still has a time to save itself if they start thinking that other cultures don’t like to talk about sex in general. I talked to people in Europe and USA and said the same thing, but can’t say that to avoid offending others.
Netflix did a live action of my favorite anime Cowboy Bebop, they made a character who never showed any interest in women a flaming lesbian, a kid who dresses gender neutral but says many times she’s a girl non-binary, and takes a character who was a traumatized war veteran and removed all of his personality so he could be non-binary for the show…… none of this is supported by the text and for the vet it goes against what his story was about.

This has honestly been a long time coming. I remember there was a time where Netflix were seen as the good guys. They would heroically swoop in to save shows that had been cruelly cancelled before their time. Only a few years later and they're the kings of cancelling shows early. After a point, I could never get attached to anything on their platform because it was sure to get snuffed out after a season or 2.

You should include bad PR. Netflix has been canceling fan favorite shows, canceled projects that people were hyped for and even shut down their animation studio.

The sad part is, Netflix is just too focused on their originals, and focusing less and less on Third Party TV and Movies, something that Hulu and Amazon does significantly alongside their originals.

They have to focus on their originals because even if they license third party content the other companies are going to take their content sooner than later. What I think they should do it’s focus on quality like Apple TV+ or HBO does.
I'd say the originals are a great idea. However, their budgets per project are insane. I'm not saying make exclusively $5M or less indie films... But the amount of $100M+ budget projects needs to be scaled back a bit.
Other publishers dont want their contents to be taken by Netflix, so not much of choice for the company. It needs new way of getting ahead
@@solay825 It's true that they have some really great originals, but the issue is that for every one good original they make ten that are dogshit. It also doesn't help that they have a tendency of cancelling good shows after only a few seasons.
Netflix falls into the "Fireproof" category, a juggernaut brand who became too complacent with programming and overall layout due to lack of competition. Issue now is that other brands have caught on to the formula and now are providing MUCH better content and an effective rollout with their pricing plans. If Netflix is not careful, we very well could be witnessing another "Blockbuster" situation happening right before our very eyes.

started on netflix in the DVD days. eventually the streaming part came out. and i remember finding myself having the same DVD for a whole month and then i cancled the DVD service. then i remembered a couple times i got like an email telling me the fee is gonna go up a dollar or so. then slowly all the shows i wanted to watch started getting taken off netflix. and one by one you start notcing all these shows with “Netflix” logo in the corner. when they canceled Xena Warrior Princess while i was in middle of watching it was the final straw.
now i let my friend pay for it and i just use his account lol.

Password sharing on Netflix is partially their OWN DOING. They FORCE you to buy the 4 stream "premium" plan to get 4K. But whats a single person to do with those THREE other streams? Sublease them to your friends of course! If these idiots would just charge by the stream (and set a more reasonable price), not the quality, most of the problem would disappear on its own.
I do have to feel like, since it comes with multiple screens, they shouldn't see it as a problem period. 4 screens being used simultaneously, on property or off, is still the 4 screens that are already paid for.

Like, you can't offer it, then get mad when people actually use it. You can't force a system where everyone in the house is traveling and logged in, then wanna charge extra for it! And thats seriously where they seem to be headed
Netflix is the only service, which differentiates, price with picture quality. I like 4K content, but for that spending $20 per month for myself only is un reasonable for me. This forces people to look for other options to get 4K content with wallet friendly budget.

I feel Netflix has grew way too fast and put out too much rubbish and filler content rather than producing enough hits. They also screwed their customers with price hikes and cracking down on password sharing despite customers paying for multiple users on the same password!
They have had occasional hits, like Squid Game, house of cards, and stranger things, but very few compared to hundred of others they release. Maybe they should focus on shows that are raking in viewers rather than spending production budget on other miscellaneous shows.
Including ads or limiting password sharing will only backfire at this point.
@@FlyingKoreanMinja even though shows aren’t enough for me to pay for Netflix on a monthly basis, I haven’t subscribed since I finished watching Stranger Things season three and I won’t subscribe back until they have new episodes. Also if Netflix bring ads, it’s going to defeat the purpose of their basic plan and lose millions of subscribers!
@@FlyingKoreanMinja I think a bigger problem is their vetting for new original content is just... not very good. They follow trends and memes rather than actually making an effort to make good content. And since they're so rich, their method of making the content is "throw money at it until you make something." Cowboy Bebop's live-action show is a good example. They saw Cowboy Bebop as one of the most profitable, successful anime in all of anime's history, so why not make a live-action reboot?
The problem is, they didn't really look at the creators of the show to see if they were capable or talented enough to make that reboot, and on top of that, they ignored the extreme criticism from fans of the original property that were begging them PLEASE DON'T MAKE THIS, WE DONT' WANT IT. They just assumed money can fix all problems, wasted millions, and then surprise surprise, the show was awful and people hated it, so they cancelled it.
I remember when Netflix was the go-to place where you could watch all those weird B movies, straight to dvd and holiday movies. there was very little original content and nobody complained.
@@nslouka90 at least it was cheap and they were offering classic hit movies from Warner Bros to even Disney. Now those studios have pulled their movies off Netflix and they decided to put our way too many Netflix originals that are tarnishing the quality of Netflix. They’re celebrity driven reality shows and reboots that no one really wanted!
For me the best streaming service is actually UA-cam Premium, for getting rid of ads on UA-cam. I’m a young adult still mooching off my parents Netflix, but if they cracked down on this I wouldn’t get my own subscription, I don’t care enough about the content. I would just do something else. If I was working there I would caution leadership to be prepared to be brutally honest with themselves about how many of those password-sharers they have any chance of getting more money out of.
Every single person I've talked to about this who canceled Netflix said it was because of the recent price increase. Not a good idea to increase the price of something that isn't a necessity during an inflationary period.
I have found that Netflix has the worst recommendation algorithm out of their competitors and their discover ability is awful. The fact that their marketing is centered around their mediocre reality shows is also baffling to me
Definitely disagree. All of the others in my experience are pretty bad. They have no rating system, and only have a watchlist feature. They'll make recommendations about the stuff you put in your watchlist, but not much else than that. The reason that their content seems more specific is because their libraries are generally smaller, and they recommended the newest stuff, or the stuff you watch most often, so it feels like you're seeing what you want to see.
Netflix has a massive catalog, but because of their watchlist and rating system, as long as you use those systems, it starts to give really tailored results. I watch a ton of anime, and guaranteed every time a new anime original gets posted on Netflix, it'll be front and center for me. Meanwhile, my mom watches tons of crime dramas, and her main page is all crime and police procedurals.
They even recently upgraded the liking feature with now a "dislike" button, a "like" button, and a "double like" button, which can help tailor the process even more. The key is using the features. If you don't like many shows, and you don't put many shows in your watchlist, it has no idea what to recommend you beyond the stuff you randomly watch and click, meaning all the data they have to go off of is watch time, which is unreliable. Because if you watch a really bad movie for 2 hours, hated it, but didn't rate it or didn't remove it from your watchlist, Netflix's algorithm just says, "I dunno man, he spent a long time watching that movie, guess he likes movies like that."
Makes that kid at Blockbuster seem not so bad.
I would argue that Prime Video has a worse recommendation model but I tend to agree that Netflix's needs work.
It was probably great for the time but now every list either repeats the same shows over and over or just shows you whatever is in your watch list. Try emptying your watch list and add some really obscure show like "Age of Tanks" and suddenly that show will be 'Popular on Netflix' or 'Trending Now'.
They even fake the 'Top 10'. The other day they told me Paw Patrol was in the top 10 most watched shows in Canada this week (because a 5 year old is watching kid shows on one of our profiles). But then if you scroll through new releases they have 13 different shows tagged with 'Top 10'. How are there over 20 shows in the top 10? Makes no sense.
I’m surprised he didn’t mention the mediocre content. For every great IP Netflix creates, they great like 30 pieces of shovel ware. They also end successful series way too soon. They will never develop a show like Friends or Seinfeld due to this strategy (shows that have evergreen drawing power for audiences). Contrast this strategy with that of HBO Max who has done an excellent job with creating compelling original content. Succession didn’t start out as a roaring success, but now it’s one of the most well respected and popular shows out there. It was given a chance to develop and grow its audience and HBO is reaping the rewards of that patience.
I’m also surprised he didn’t mention the binge model and how dumping all episodes onto the platform at one time stifles anticipation, stalls water cooler conversations, and allows for the IP to fall out of the zeitgeist far sooner than if the show released episodes weekly.
I also believe releasing degenerate content like “Cuties” hurt their image with a large segment of the US population (including a lot of families)

I think you outlined most of the key issues well. Another problem that I think all of the subscription services will face is "subscription surfing" which is much like channel surfing, except applied to entire streaming services. In a nutshell, people will watch whatever content appeals to them on one streaming service, and once they've depleted those shows or movies they'll cancel their subscription and join another streaming service (even if it's only to watch one show that appeals to them - The Mandalorian, for example.) Once they're finished watching that, the cycle repeats itself and the viewer is off to find new hunting ground on another service. Eventually, some of those same subscribers might renew their Netflix subscription when new content appears, but this pattern is baked into the model, especially with so many services available now. It's why subscribers fell off so precipitously after the pandemic - because the increase in free time accelerated this natural pattern.

What content do you create ?
There are two things that are important to take on account on this subject: the quantity and quality of the content that Netflix has been developing over the last couple of years, and this absurd idea of password sharing being a problem.
I think the quality of their content has suffered because they wanted to get a library large enough to compete with WB/HBO, Disney+ and any other stream service, because they knew the licenses were up between 2021 and 2022.
I don't know how can you uncouple the password sharing/household from a family plan. I mean, my parents, my brothers and I are on the same family plan, but we live in three different houses. Do Netflix count that as password sharing? Because that would be absurd, there's no physical installation, it's all digital.
They also wanted to cater to activists that will actually bully and terrorize those that don't want the product they're offering.
For real though, 95% of Netflix originals are complete ass, and they hardly even promote the ones that ARE good. Also the whole "releasing the entire season at once" really hurts the momentum of their shows. With Squid Games, people binged it within a day or 2, and it was super popular for a month, and now no one cares. If they had a weekly release schedule for shows like most other platforms, the hype around their shows would be more sustainable instead of one big "horrah" and then nothing for a year. I've honestly always felt this "binging" model hurts their good shows because the traction of these shows is just gone so soon and everyone gets sick of hearing about it

Don't forget they've lost 2 major rewatchable shows - "Friends" and "The Office." Shows like this kept people tuning in.
Another thing that I think is impacting Netflix is that they don’t listen to fans. They have cancelled amazing shows like Julie and The Phantoms, Grand Army, One Day at A Time, Anne With an E, etc. These shows had large followings, especially online. Meanwhile, the gave content like Insatiable multiple seasons. If anything, I see this as inevitable, since they refuse to listen to their customers

Big Mouth, for me, is neither a good or bad show, it's a show that unnecessarily takes things to the extreme.
A friend of mine wanted to see it, and I tried, I normally don't judge a show on its first season, but I could barely sit through the seasons I watched.
When we talked, apparently some of the content in the show, she experienced, for example one of the characters had their first period in a public place, to which when I was in Middle school, that apparently happened to someone while on a field trip, so there is a possibility that a lot of the content on the show is based off real life events, this.....I actually have no problem with, as on the show Married with Children, Al was left at the airport, had to walk home, and demanded for his car keys back as no one was responsible, Bud gave Al a screwdriver, this was actually something my family laughed at as we had a vehicle that we turned on with a screwdriver, people will cling to something that they can relate too, or makes them feel not alone or the 'only one'.
The issue I have with Big Mouth, is that the creators are trying to find something to push, that dose not need to be brought up. One episode, as far as I am concerned, confirms this. One character mentioned making their lives into a T.V. show, to which another said (not word for word), "WOAH! A lot of the shit we've done would never make it pass the censors, plus age restrictions and all.....well, unless it was in cartoon form." This tells me that the shows creators 'want' to see where the line is, and using loopholes push it over that line anyways, I do not like this at all as these people titter on the edge of appropriate and inappropriate, while the main characters are still minors, however, due to these 'loopholes' can still make these scenes, placing basically children in sexual situations. This is what I have a problem with.
What if they were never amazing in the first place?
The problem is the content. Years ago it seemed the selection would increase and they'd transition into having more and more movies and old TV shows. I figured eventually I'd be able to watch nearly anything but the opposite happened. They seem to have been removing stuff more than adding. I'll think "I'd like to watch movie X or TV show Y." I'll check to see if they have X or Y and the answer is "No" most of the time. That's the problem. I've watched most of what they have that I want to see and it takes a long time for things to change as far as selection. They keep going up on cost and they should use that to increase the selection instead of constantly getting rid of stuff.
I don't think it's them removing content so much as other companies now refusing to license it out to them.

They will never be able to keep up. For every Stranger Things hit they have, there’s 20 Disenchantments that are flops. That’s a lot of investment into something no one watches.
Disney on the other hand, has 100 years of a content library and the world’s best IP to continue to grow their catalog with Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and their Disney original name carries a premium quality to it.
I think one of the biggest reasons, Netflix is having trouble with increasing subscriber growth and revenue is competition from other streaming services. Disney+ & HBO Max have much better path to growth simply because of their already existing libraries with huge amount of quality content as well as having in house studios that can keep creating new exclusive content, not to mention the flexibility to burn any amount of cash both these competing services may feel they need to secure market share.
Netflix reached the top by being first to market but it did so by raising huge amount of debt with path to growth and profitability just on the basis that no other new streaming services could come close to them. But clearly rivals are catching up to Netflix with more resources than Netflix has

I can't say I hate Netflix. But I see it like a premium service, compared to the other streaming services available nowadays. It'd be the first to go if I had to tighten my budget.

I feel that history repeats itself, Netflix was founded on the shortcommings of blockbuster... Netflix is blockbuster now.... all the other competitions are stepping all over netflix, in content, and pricing. I think Netflix should humble themselves. I pay 4 TV Users and they still want to charge me for remote usage. Also, they got in a fight with marvel, disney, etc etc and now have a lot of internetional movies and content to fill up choices that nobody seems to want to watch.

I used to work for Roland corp between 2000 - 2005. 2 years after I left they closed the U.S. warehouse distribution center. I kinda saw it coming when I was there based on sales dropping every year

Because of the arms race between the streaming services, we will see a rise in piracy again. I guarantee it. Streaming had a definite impact against piracy but then the media companies became too greedy and wanted a larger piece of the pie, thus we see the balkanization of the different services and the separation of content. Now we're back to nuCable.
Netflix was good when it was the one place to get everything. Now that every company has their own streaming service, I’ve just gone back to pirating everything. There’s no way I am paying for multiple services just so I can watch a few shows on each one.
Netflix as an alternative to a cable subscription & buying and renting dvd’s was a fantastic value. But the moment the shows started disappearing from their platform due to their extremely stubborn unwillingness to carry programming if they can’t be the exclusive provider for it, that’s when they lost me. I’m also not paying $2 an episode for legacy programs that have been out for decades. I think it’s even worse than cable was now. Really surprised it took this long for consumers to deliver this message.
Some of it isn't unwilllingness, its inability. Everyone else got their own streaming platform and strangled Netflix, who has in turn screwed themselves over with baffling business decisions and doing everyything in their power to destroy any good will
I think they're pricing themselves out of the market. I think HBO Max has much better overall content and now Netflix is slightly higher. Cracking down in password sharing would also be a mistake as they would be the first and already limit simultaneous streams.
While hbo max does have good content, only a small number of what they have appeals to me personally.
The thing that makes Netflix so good. Is that it has so much for every type of person and taste, whether it be tv, movies, documentaries ect. Iv had literally every streaming service available. And no matter what I do I eventually run out of things in those other ones that I might like.
Netflix however, has so much, there is always something that interests me to watch.

@@winelord Disney+ allows four simultaneous streams at a time. While there terms say password sharing is not allowed they do not enforce it. Netflix has also had it in their terms that you cannot share passwords but has never enforced it.
I think the inability to license a lot of content due to so many of the content producers having their own streaming services and therefore being unwilling to license is the biggest issue. I don't think this is going to improve unless these new services fail.
I think one of the big problems is increasing prices, and decreasing content. Netflix are quickly becoming known as the company that will cancel your fave shows and that's a difficult place to come back from. I think the subscriber base might also look a lot worse if you remove those subs which are included free as part of packages people get from other sources. They do still have some incredibly high quality shows but is that enough to keep them going in 10 years time - maybe not. As deals end with other providers of content who setup their own services the Netflix offering is going to start to look rather barren.
I subscribed to Netflix during lockdown for COVID believing I’d be able to go back and watch old series shows and movies from the 80’s and 90’s when I watched a lot of TV and went to movies. Then I got really disappointed that the list was really limited… but I COULD watch new content. Maybe not a bad thing, but not what I signed up for in the first place. After not using Netflix for a couple of months in a row I got rid of it.
I also got Netflix for my 90 year old mother, but she said it was too complicated for her. Mom uses her computer 4-5 hours a night, so she’s not illiterate towards technology…. Not as sharp as a 30 year old, but not stupid either. Two Netflix subscriptions from me… cancelled in 2022.
I'm in my 30s and Netflix isn't the easiest to use or navigate. They need to streamline it so people can find what they want to watch instead of just throwing a mishmash of things at you.
To me, this is the classic situation where netflix settled into their success and did not prepare for the time when Disney was going to pull out and do their own thing.
Then, Disney not only pulled out but Used their size and power to offer so much more than Nexflix could even dream of offering. I don't see them ever getting back to the leader boards in the movie industry.
What killed Netflix was the pandemic. Everyone sat at home watching all the shows, and suddenly watched A LOT OF SHOWS, only for people to have watched everything they wanted and suddenly see nothing new going forward. That's why their shares went mental, anyone with half a brain could see it was going to callopse once normality resumed.

My thoughts are that Netflix's problem is extremely simple. 15 years ago they had a monopoly on streaming movies. Now they have competition from a dozen different other streaming services.

The political aspect you mentioned at the end, I don’t think that alone would affect many peoples decisions at all, but now combined with the high competition, high pricing and cost cutting on the consumers part, that could certainly become a significant factor when deciding which subscriptions to cut, which company does the customer dislike the most when so many options with great content are now available?
Market correction after covid lockdowns is still the biggest factor for their current losses in subs I’m sure, but political reasons are very likely making them take more of the losses that would otherwise be taken by their competitors
I did a poll on my channel for whether my subscribers thought Netflix will make a good BioShock movie (since it was recently announced). Over 70% said no! So another big reason for the possible fall of Netflix is that many people don't like much of their content and don't trust them to make good content. I also hear many complaints about how shows audiences do like get canceled too fast.
Yeah especially their live action remake movies are not that great. Has everyone forgotten what a failure their live action recreation of Death Note was? Everyone watched it once because it was obscenely terrible, had a laugh, and then never touched it again.
I personally think the streaming market is getting too saturated. Netflix’s current troubles and CNN+ failing are 2 possible signs the streaming market COULD crash. Also, having to subscribe to 3 different services to watch content from Disney, Warner Bros and Paramount is not something everyone can afford! Also, if content gets taken off a streaming service, it’s gone unless it happens to be available on DVD or some other means! I think a possible factor into Netflix’s demise is their disregard for animation. They were a powerhouse for many years but suddenly decided to cancel MANY projects all at once, putting too many eggs in the Boss Baby basket (I’d have thought that new Boss Baby series would be on Peacock instead, being a Dreamworks franchise!) and losing all knowledge of what they’re doing!
Also, with a possible recession incoming, at least here in the UK, many people are going to have to cut back on what they spend, so these many different services will have a hard time co-existing! Did you know Cartoon Network ceased broadcasting in Spain in 2013 because that country was hit by a recession? What’s great about cable and satellite TV is that for one monthly fee, you can get many channels with content from many different studios and can record it very easily! With streaming, you have to subscribe to many services subject to what you want to watch, content can be taken off and it’s not guaranteed you can watch it some other way and if your internet goes down, you’re out of luck! Just because you CAN rely on the internet for many things doesn’t mean you should! Personally, I would much rather add to my DVD and Blu Ray collection than rely solely on streaming! You know anyone leaving Netflix? Buy them The Mitchells vs The Machines on DVD or Blu Ray!

And possibly this is part of reason for what's going on, that people are gravitating toward the new shiney things that are out right now, but I don't think there is room for all of then. Canceling cable to nab a few streaming services was a no-brainer, but starts to look less attractive when people realie they are paying for 8 streaming services.

Netflix had a chance to be different from the other networks and failed miserably. While it's understandable that shows would need to be canceled if not enough people were watching them, they could do something different - and let the shows have an "ending". Even if its just a final order of two episodes, or a 2 hour movie.
There is nothing worse than being a viewer who is getting invested in a franchise, only to have it canceled abruptly. A good example of this is Mind Hunter. They spend two seasons building up the BTK killer, and then the show just ends. I get it was expensive to make, and not enough people were watching that masterpiece of a show. But at least give the series a 2 hour film, or an order of 3 episodes to wrap up.
I know for me, things like this kills my confidence in wanting to watch shows on Netflix. I'd rather wait for a series to be 100% done before jumping in. Why waste my time on something when I don't even know if it's gonna have an ending? And again, Netflix had the opportunity to be different from Network TV. Maybe instead of spending millions on 30 + shows/movies, how about you FOCUS on quality first - then expand once you've completed projects you've set up. It's not that hard of a concept.
For me the unpredictability of content is becoming an issue. I moved to Japan several years ago and enjoyed being able to watch British tv shows from back home which Netflix kept for many years like Downton Abbey, Skins, Peep Show and Inbetweeners. All of these have been removed from Japan Netflix for no reason and I find it harder to justify paying when Netflix just don’t seem able to licence and keep content I’m interested in. I also get annoyed that subtitles aren’t always available for international movies in English. For example, if you watch an anime in the UK, English subtitles are available. If you watch the same anime in Japan, there are no English subtitles at all. The same goes for movies in other languages too. I’ve complained about this but they just don’t seem to care.

They've also really cracked down on VPNs. Used to be able to access Netflix Japan's library with a VPN I had, but then it stopped working. No amount of troubleshooting did anything

Besides the troubles you have outlined, another you've overlooked is quality of content. They often don't have a lot of good quality shows or anything that could draw people in.
I would argue they have a lot of stuff that draws people in. But that's the problem. They only want people to be drawn in to see their hit new viral film or tv show. But most of their new content is really shoddy quality, and not actually very good or well produced/directed. So people watch for the show, say, "Okay, that sucked," and then leave again. That's not a good business model, because it relies on them spending tens of millions to produce flops that may go viral or may waste away in obscurity.
And because Netflix pays upfront for productions, if the show is a flop, the creators aren't the ones responsible; they can make garbage and laugh their way to the bank.

For my household, Netflix was the first streaming site for us but soon will be the one we're dropping. Kinda like you said, the most expensive one would make the most sense to drop.
Honestly I'd say it was an inevitability. They were the only frog in the pond at the beginning, now there are dozens of competitors, many of whom gutted Netflix to take back their own shows and movies. While I don't see them crumbling any time soon, they need to start giving people reasons to come solely to them. And ditching the binge model too, all hype for their shows disappear overnight once people binge through them.
Release new episodes of shows weekly, keep people discussing the show, and obviously keeping their subs active to return to watch.

The question therein is was that just because Arcane was really good, and people were ravenously wanting to see it, or was that calculated decision that paid off? Streaming has definitely become a bubble that's destined to burst at some point. Too many streaming services. No way can the market sustain all of them long term.
After canceling archive 81 immediately after it was top 10 for almost a month I lost all faith in Netflix.

I think the biggest issues are the price going up and password sharing. I understand Netflix wants to crack down and get their money. But I’ve always felt they were in a good position financially. And asking for more just makes them seem greedy, and messing with the customers doesn’t help. Despite the fact that a number of them are piggy backing off one account, Netflix was still making good money with the subscriptions they had. And I feel like cracking down on the passwords will just turn a lot of people off, like it already is right now. They need to give the people more reasons to stay, cause their original content isn’t enough for the price and restrictions.
Yeah, this exactly tbh. A lot of people saw them as being greedy with the password sharing crackdown, so they cancelled. Add in that they’d rather keep making new junk instead of focusing on any good properties they have short of a handful of hits (Orange is the New Black springs to mind), and a lot of people aren’t going to stay for that.
@terminal3 Yeah, this is definitely the frustrating part of Netflix's perspective. Because like, I see their perspective too. They don't care about your family being in two different places at the end of the day. What they do care about is something like one of my friends. She was in a relationship with a guy, but they broke it off. However, she was still signed in to his Netflix account, so she kept using his service for free, because he didn't take her off the account. That's the person Netflix doesn't like; she's mooching very obviously. And that's a very common issue.
The problem is that they're using a scorched earth policy to deal with the problem, and affecting people like your family who are caught in their crossfire, which just makes people mad.
Raising prices just made me angry. Especially when they waste so much money on reality TV and high profile deals while canceling so much of everything else.
You really need to make one of these for Disney. Politics aside they have been making many bad decisions lately especially at the theme parks and it’s been showing in their stock price as recently as the beginning of the year. There’s a reason why the current CEO is nicknamed Bob Cheapek or Bob Paycheck.

The biggest problem for me, is they had a lot of really good original content, but now not so much. Too many old series reruns and old movies I’ve already seem.
What kills Netflix is the price for content ratio. Prime video is included with Amazon Prime which most of America has, so it is very convenient and includes a decent amount. Hulu is cheaper and not only includes a backlog, but also the regular recurring shows from Fox, ABC, NBC, etc. I agree with a lot of the commenters; you get Netflix for a month to binge watch a couples seasons of a show and a few movies and then you cancel. I'm not confident Netflix is going to be able to out compete with the major networks with regards to making shows in the long run because I think they are going to keep burning too much money.
Hulu also has specialized deals and packages. Like if you're a student you get Hulu + Showtime for free with Spotify Premium, which pretty much everybody has. That's Spotify + Hulu + Showtime for $5 a month. Who tf would pay $17 a month for Netflix when that's an option?
The password sharing thing is such BS, honestly, because they already do have different pricing for how many screens can watch on the same account at a time. I think it raises, like, $2 for each screen you add after watching from 2 screens or something. That’s not a problem for them, if you ask me.
I think you forgot to mention that Netflix creates its content based on the information data collected from their own clients, therefore the content is usually focused on certain agendas and this seems to not please everyone on the platform
Netflix was so cool in the early to mid 2010s. Now it’s overpriced and has much less content. I’m worried the streaming services will be so over saturated like the tv market.

They should also focus on content. Recently they have been putting out questionable content and cancelling good content so that drives subscribers away. They should also up the ante on investing in producing content in other regions, especially in African countries. Having a more diverse library will attract more international subscribers.

The biggest decline on Netflix is the other companies pulling out of Netflix and their selection dropping because they become exclusive to their own little pocket universe.
So you’re dividing up the audience and suddenly your eight dollar a month becomes $15 times five which is greater than just doubling the price. And each of the individual streaming services think with their ego rather than what they’re actually providing.
I know it’s a touchy subject so you avoided discussing the elephant in the room , Politics which is certainly responsible for some of the exodus. Netflix is a global streaming service and some of the political issues embedded within their content isn’t accepted by an international audience

Saw somebody mention once that their release model may be a problem for them. Their shows can only exist so much in public consciousness because they drop every episode at once. You can't expect people to be on the same pace when it comes to a 13 episode & 20 hour show. So show discussions are limited compared to cable shows, because you don't know where everyone else is at in the current season. Also leads to there being no extended hype because there's no week to week anticipation. Once you finish the show, that's it.
Netflix already has started doing this with some series. If you air a show over 8 weeks, and that show has a person hooked, that's two months worth of payment 😉.

They say that's why they just up and cancelled GLOW. It was way WAY too expensive to try to carry on with producing through the pandemic, and the 4th season wouldn't be out until 2022 at its earliest otherwise.
I can't remember who discussed this at length, but it's possible the binge approach is officially not a great idea anymore. As much as I want to see all of this last season of Better Call Saul in one sitting, drawing it out each week is building up suspense, allowing me to read episode recaps to discover details I missed, and having conversations with friends about each new episode.
By comparison, watching the final 7 episodes of Ozark in a single evening means I don't think about the show again.
Plus for shows that take up to 2 years for the next season to drop, it's easy to forget you ever watched the previous one.
@@johnchedsey1306 Very true, The Expanse learned from that and started doing weekly episodes in the latter seasons. I remember my friends who were used to Binging being upset they weren't given everything. mostly due to their lifestyle of work/kids and finding free time to watch anything. I was like, welp just wait till everything is out and watch then.
@@JL-sm6cg The issue is that binge watching IS popular. Most studies show that if you give a person the option to binge a show, or watch weekly/biweekly, most people prefer the binge watching method. So Netflix has stayed true to the formula for a long time because it's what people want. But what people want is also not maximally profitable, which upsets investors, which is a whole different can of worms altogether.
Please do an episode about Gamefly! It was basically Netflix but with videogames. They still exist as a company but I doubt most people remember them.
A lot of people have left them due to them getting "political" and "woke", so to speak. I left them because it would seem that every single time I would want to watch a movie, they wouldn't have the title that I wanted. They'd offer something similar.

One solution to the problem with Netflix, is a merger with one of the big studios. There is one in particular that would make sense: NBC Universal. True, they already have a streaming service, that being Peacock, but it ain't all that big. There are quite a few Netflix Original shows made and likely owned by NBC studios such as Dreamworks. So rather than devaluing Netflix further by removing a ton of content, take advantage of the name recognition and make Netflix the new home for ad-free NBC legacy content. And maybe have Peacock just be the home for free-with-ads NBC legacy content.
There was one point where it looked like Disney was going to try to buy Netflix. Netflix had made a deal with Disney to carry all the Disney movies, all the new Star Wars movies, all the new Marvel movies, etc. There were lots of articles suggesting that Disney was interesting in the purchase. This was back in Fall 2016, before Disney plus was ever announced.
The other issue with this strategy is that NBC doesn't want to get rid of Peacock. Since they produce their own content for TV nonstop (they've already spent the money), and since their service is entirely ad based, Peacock is basically free money for them. Doesn't matter if it's not super profitable; any profit from online streaming is just another dollop of goodness on the top.
This is very different from all the other streaming services, whose business models rely on original content and licensing fan favorite films and tv shows.

Hulu is my favorite because of their wide selection of anime and because I can also get live programming just when I want it. So during football season through the NFL draft, I pay the additional amount it costs for live programming but once football season is over, post-draft, I change back to just no ads service which is just over $12.
The biggest issue I have with Netfilx is that they seem more focused on creating original content rather than try to build a better catalog of movies and TV shows. I originally thought, way back in the beginning, was that Netflix would carry EVERYTHING ever made. Movies, TV shows, it was all on Netflix. Well no it's not. My one favorite old TV show is on Netflix, but Prime Video has another movie/show I like. And Paramount + has another. And Disney + has another. So if I want to watch the things I like, I have to bounce among four or more streaming services. And then there arrives the point where you have to choose which one to drop. Probably Netflix, since they don't show anything I really want to see.
Agreed. I’m constantly forgetting which app to open for which show because they are spread out across so many platforms now. Each has the big draw to get you in and then really mediocre content for everything else. Netflix right now seems to be the worst.
Well much of that is not because of Netflix… the media companies who produce those tv shows and movies are creating their own streaming services. That means that they’re going to take their stuff off competing platforms like netflix…..
Yeah, the second things lole HBOMax and Disney+ got announced I became pretty worried for Netflix's future. They aren't a movie/television studio, it's a shame but they're being outclassed.

If I could add another reason for people leaving, I would say it's also because of the quality of their content. It might be COVID related, but they've been adding a lot of content lately that is just really of a sub-par quality. Far too may of the "Netflix" made shows are just bad. They seem to be focusing on quantity and not quality.
It's hard to say which streaming service is the best. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but overall i think we're getting to the point where almost every company wants to have a streaming service. I know I'm exaggerating abit but who knows we might see a nintendo streaming service in the future, or even Microsoft.
Microsoft does have a subscription service called Xbox game pass
And Nintendo has the Switch online service where you're basically streaming NES, SNES, and N64 games since you can't play them offline

They were once the powerhouse for their best games between the 1980's and 1990's for the Arcades and video game consoles like the Sega Genesis. However, various poor decisions, feuds with Sega of America and financial debt caused them to exit the hardware business in 2001 and was restructured as a 3rd party developer and publisher. Company Man, you should do a video on that.
A lot of cities and states are imposing an "amusement tax" targeting people who gave up cable, but rely on streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Those locations will get their share one way or the other. Yet another reason to just go back to physical media.

I was watching a video the other day from a UA-camr called Captain Midnight and I think he really hit the nail on the head for what the issue is.
It's not the business model, it's the release model. Being able to sit and binge an entire season of a show in a single sitting was really novel and great when what you were watching was a show released 10 years ago. Buzz for a show that old isn't really a thing anymore besides combing it for meme fodder.
And when you're coming from cable when you couldn't watch those at all unless they were syndicated, that was really new and really neat.
But Netflix due to competing services from the actual holders of the IPs themselves lost a great deal of that. And now the game to stay competitive is original programming.
Access to the contents of your mother's VHS collection on demand is what draws you into Disney+, what makes you stay is the Mandalorian.
Netflix effectively has neither of those things now. And their attempts to make Mandalorians, so to speak, are dead in the water on arrival. Because they release the whole thing all in one go, get one week of memes, and nobody is talking about it after that. Worse, the announcement that they've been cancelled because the buzz is dead and they don't wanna throw money at something whose buzz is dead, comes 3 weeks later.
There's no reason to stick around. Whereas Disney releases their original stuff more like a cable channel, on a weekly basis, you gotta keep tuning in for it, and there's new things to make memes out of for each new episode. And importantly, whether it's set up for future seasons doesn't get revealed until the last week of the release schedule so there's reason to have hope and get invested.
Unlike the live action Cowboy Bebop where by the time I found time to sit and watch it, it had already been cancelled and there was no reason for me to ever get emotionally invested in it. So I watched 1 episode to get a feel for the adaptation decisions they made, talked about them, and I was done. There's no incentive for me to continue because the show was already dead. And I wouldn't have even done that much save for the fact that I have access to my mother's account via password sharing. Killing that means I'm not gonna watch it at all, or I'm gonna pirate it. It's definitely not going to encourage me to pay for it, a thing I would never do.
And rather than fix that problem their move has been to increase their prices and make anti-consumer policies against password sharing for no apparent reason, and now you have a situation where it's just not as good a deal as Disney or Warner Bros is offering you on their platforms.
Disney+ is the one I actually subscribe to myself, and I lent the password out to my friends so we could all be a bunch of nerds together and talk about star wars. I have another friend who did the same in return for their HBOMax.
None of us are doing that with Netflix. A couple of us have access to it through our parents, and the company seems to want to kill that.

I remember back in the xbox 360 days part of the Netflix app let you watch movies in a loby synced with other friends online with their accounts. Why in the world Netflix ditched these loby based syncronized watching options is beyond baffling to me. You can proxy it with 3rd part extensions, but I have no idea why its not officially supported anymore. Those late 00's - early 10's were the most enjoyment I got from Netflix.

Yeah Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated came back and now is likely staying with HBO Max. I’ll never forget that one summer when all the Disney Channel content disappeared because Disney + was entering the streaming service. The Dark Knight recently left Netflix on Sunday and is currently with HBO Max. Then Nickelodeon started licensing their shows, but they might all leave and only be available on Paramount +. Can’t forget Friends and the Office no longer being there. Basically Netflix was great because of other companies shows were mostly there, not their original content, especially their movies are trash like 365 Days and Tall Girl for instance.
Quantity over Quality…they kept trying to throw content against a wall to see what stuck and hardly any of it did. The longest running show on there? Grace and Frankie. Sheesh! Disney, Paramount, Warner-Max all have decades of Hollywood experience and rich IP to mine through that I actually like to see. Netflix simply doesn’t. Also? They charge for more for multiple simultaneous streams and even 4K video quality which is ridiculous!
Imagine if Netflix released content like Arcane and Squid Game regularly and released each episode weekly.
I remember back when I used to read articles questioning the future of Netflix and I really was really rooting for them. I recommended the service to everyone I knew.
Now I shed no tears to hear they are struggling. They became just another giant corporation that stopped listening to the customer.

Best streaming service right now: HBO Max. HBO television blows everything else out of the water, and has been producing hits for at least 3 solid decades. Also has a great movie catalog including new WB releases. Much better content for roughly the same price as Netflix.

They need to roll it out in more international markets.
Even the UI is pretty cool and they give you like media libraries to pick from, example Cartoon Network, Studio Ghibli, etc.

I think is struggling on their original content too. Sometimes dumping money into a show or movie that doesn’t give them the returns they want or endorsing a show or movie that has really bad public reception (I.E Cuties and 13 Reasons Why and more). I think people are just losing faith on Netflix as a studio and don’t want to pay for something they don’t care about.

@@gebs123 The show writers just went bonkers with the plot and everything too. There’s a video out there where the writer and the creator of the show talk to psychologist and talk about the show. The psychologists were basically saying that all of the stuff they did wasn’t a good idea. There’s a lot of suicide prevention organizations that have guidelines and specifications on what’s a healthy way of showing/depicting suicide. 13 Reasons Why just did it the unhealthy way.
I’m amazed that he didn’t mention controversial content as an issue. I know a family who cancelled their Netflix over Cuties, and they’re surely not the only one.
I tried Netflix twice but the trouble I had with them was there lack of any content. They had such limited content compared to something like UA-cam that for unlimited UA-cam without ads is only 15 bucks a month. Not at all impressed with Netflix and will not waste money using them again.
The thing is, they've risen from falling before. Back when Amazon launched prime video streaming, everyone thought it would be the death of Netflix, it wasn't. Same thing when Netflix lost the Disney content. Netflix keeps seeming to rise again. Plus, they currently have something like 100m logins that are being shared that they are not monetizing. They need to solve that and monetize those sharing their logins.
That's a good point about Prime. But he does mention in the video that they have faced some problems in the past and comeback from it. Not sure I agree about the Disney content though, I do think that hurt them and continues to hurt them, especially fpr famiies with young kids. All in all I agree with you, it seems a bit early to be talking about the "Fall" of Netflix- we will have to see how they respond.
I reckon many of those shared logins are those who won’t pay for content in anyway. Password sharing is just a legal grey area compared to the alternative of just pirating, but once you start charging those guys they will just go back to stream stuff the old fashioned way, on a dingy computer monitor covered in 18+ ads. I believe maybe half of that number would stay on Netflix if they decide to try to monetise that lot

To be fair, I think Netflix should find additional things to offer and produce less content but of higher quality.
At Netflix’s height when they had content from everyone and you didn’t need to scroll forever to find something good piracy was actually on the decline because Netflix usually had it within a few months of hitting dvd. Once all these other streaming platforms popped up and took all the good content from Netflix people jumped ship and piracy became popular again. If all the providers came together and made 1 reasonably priced service that had all the offerings it would have became super successful. But since they all wanted their own they will never be as successful as they could have combined.
The fact Netflix is on this channel twice shows how far from grace they have fallen.
