Pete put up those collegiate numbers when there was not only no 3-point line, but when hand checking was allowed, and also there was no shot clock. All of these contributed to fewer shots for Pete. Also, the hypothetical case for what he could have scored with a 3-point line leaves out the fact that when fouled attempting those shots, he would have received 3 free throws, which would only add to his total. When he played in the NBA, not only was there no 3-pont line for most of his career, but hand checking was allowed, which greatly affected Pete because of his style of play. If allowed to roam free, he could have been even more amazing.

The problem with Pistol is he was born 50 years before his time. If he played in todays game with all the lax ball handling rules, the three point line, wide open spacing, no hand checking....he'd be doing things we ain't never seen before while averaging 37 a game and his jersey would be the #1 best seller in the world. When you get the opportunity, please react to his ridiculous 68 point game. RIP Pistol Pete.....Gone way too soon.

Precious few clips left of Pete! Imagine all we have lost
He was a hero to any kid playing basketball then.
I’m in Athens Ga n one game against UGA, he played keep away for over a minute at the end of the game. Then from half court corner swished a half court shot to end the game. OUR fans rushed the court hoisting him on their shoulders!!! Who else has had that?!
The creative/entertaining modern NBA play is Pete’s legacy.

Nobody will ever equal Pistol Pete's collegiate accomplishments because he achieved it without the three-pointer. And for you young people who do not know, in pistol Pete's last season in the NBA, the three-point line was introduced, and Pete shot 66.7 on his three-pointer attempts while playing on one leg with a bad back and not being able to do physically what he used to be before the injuries, so imagine what pistol Pete would have done if he had played healthy with a three-point line in the NBA; it would have been terrifying because pistol Pete was very athletic and elusive and it's one of the best guards ever when it came to playing underneath the rim and scoring because he had a lot of low post moves as well and was a great finisher.

I got to see him play March 6,1976 in the Super Dome against the Boston Celtics that had Dave Cowens and Tiny Archibald. I was living at the time between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. LSU sponsored a traveling basketball camp called the LSU Tigers mighty mites. Pistol Pete had taught them basketball drills, and they would travel around to smaller towns to teach us. I used one drill to I was an adult. The behind the back pass to yourself off of the wall. He was one of my all-time favorites.

Pistol Pete was truly a legend and a court Wizard, growin up in the 70's he and Dr. J were the top guys, along with Kareem, redefined their positions...R.I.P. Pistol..

  • @scottgorski7931

Yeah, in high school in the 70's everyone wanted to be Pistol. Guys would wear the same kind of socks, shoes and hair style. We would practice the ball handling and try to make the long range jumpers. His passing skills were God like and we all looked like fools trying to imitate them. Of course there was no way you would ever try any of his moves in an organized practice or game, unless you wanted to spend the rest of your life running laps. You saw the NCAA scoring records but what made him special was the way he could control the ball and at a time when your hand had to be on top of the ball. He was the Original Showtime, which is what they called warm ups before the game when he was in college because he would put on a display of ball handling. Pete wasn't only 40 years ahead of his time, he was 40 years ahead of most of his team mates. The only other player I can think of at that time who played his style was Dr. J and when they played together on all-star teams it was magic.

I saw Pete play against the Lakers in the old LA Forum when he was with the Hawks. On one fast break, he was in the middle of a three on two. In full stride, he passed the ball behind his back to the left and the guy made an easy layup. The next fast break, the defender expected Pete to pass behind his back again, so he cheated to Pete's left to pick off the pass. Pete faked the behind the back pass, suckered the defender and held the ball and went in for an easy layup. That's one of the plays that is in this video. It was a different era and the NBA played a different game back then, but Pete was one of the best of his time. College basketball and the NBA were not on TV very much in those days. So most people didn't get to see Pete play. If there was TV coverage like today, he would have been internationally famous.

Opinion: Maravich was the best ball handler ever. Kareem had the most unstoppable shot. Chamberlain was the most dominant player ever. We all know what Jordan could do. Bird's IQ was off the charts. Bill Russell, my favorite player, wrote the book on defense, was the only player with a higher IQ than Bird, and knew how to win championships, as he proved in high school, college, the Olympics and as a pro, as his 11 rings demonstrate. The Big O, the Logo, Magic, the list goes on. I think if Maravich could have somehow been influenced by Bill Russell's philosophy... his team concept, he might have won more games and possibly a championship. I think it would have been great if he had played with the Globetrotters for a year or two.

I grew up watching Maravich. There was NOBODY remotely like him. The limited highlights of him today don't tell a fraction of the story. He was SO far ahead of his time, basketball purists of his day did not take well to his style and that includes his own NBA teammates. Had he played with a real supporting cast, his NBA numbers would have been far better and if he played in an era like today with a 3 point line and the ability to carry/palm the ball without a whistle like today's ball-handlers, nobody could imagine what he would have been able to do.
Watch his LSU highlight package and remember, there was no 3 and no shot clock, so teams could slow the game and limit his possessions......plus there was no hand-check rule. If Pete played with the current rules package, in college his average would have been in the 60 points per game range and his NBA numbers would have been at least 35. Add to that he had EVERY pass in the book, especially since he wrote a lot of that book and was a scoring machine from all 3 levels. His moves were copied by everyone.
