as a person american who is beginning to like soccer i respect the history of english soccer from the players coaches and teams andi thank u for posting this. because of this i really respect and like liverpool
You're spot on Paul, The BBC have cut parts of Grange Hill episodes on DVD due to a music track in the episode and this is only one track and easy to cut out in the context that the scene perhaps wasn't essential to the episode. Not so easy here, massively frustrating,
I just watched this entire series thanks to you. Just the most amazing trip down memory lane for me. I can't thank you enough for that and taking the time and trouble to upload all this. Cheers mate. :)
Good to see Ian Ure still cocking up.....!! It's difficult to find a clip of him on UA-cam where he doesn't fall over, leave a pass-back short, score an own goal or give away a penalty..... one of the mysteries of life was Arsenal managed to offload him to Man Utd at a profit!
My pleasure. I agree with your comments. Another slight flaw in the series was that it was heavily dependent on matches which the BBC covered, omitting many classics shown only on ITV. Having said all that, it remains my favourite TV series ever!
For most of us modern-day Arsenal fans (yes we ARE Gooners too!) especially us Americans who became Gooners because of The Invincibles from 2002-04, this is indeed a history lesson in English Football that The Gunners were more than just Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg and "Mad Jens" Lehmann, that we had greats even in the 70s like Charlie George, George Graham (who would later become one of our most successful managers) John Radford, Frank McLintock, and Bob Wilson. But oh, how the uniforms were so simple back then, no shirt sponsors, no names of the backs, and no designated squad numbers, just #1 for the goalkeeper (in a neutral green strip), and 2-11 for the rest of the (what we now call) the Starting XI, with #12 for the one allowed substitute (prior to 1966 there were no substitutions allowed). The tackles were hard and sometimes bone-crunching or even bone-breaking (ask Dave Whelan of Blackburn Rovers what they were like in the FA Cup Final in 1960 vs Wolves) and nobody ever took a dive, did an acting job or flopped around to draw a foul/penalty/booking. And amazingly enough, all the great football clubs from back then who are now floundering around in the second (or lower) tier of English football like: Leeds United (relegated in 2004, currently in Championship), Newcastle United (relegated in 2016, currently in Championship), Nottingham Forest (relegated in 1993, still in Championship) and also Derby County, relegated in 2008, still floundering around in the Championship as well. How some great prolific clubs of the Game's past have sunk so low so fast. (UPDATE - edit as of July 9, 2017: Newcastle United won the Championship and automatic promotion back to the Premier League)
Yeah I am Liverpool fan. And even today we can still remember the disappointment Arsenal inflicted us in '71 and especially '89. They were the spoilers of good time.
Nice that you're into proper football, Ray, but they're not uniforms, they're kits. Also, Arsenal - of all the English clubs, you pick them. Why, oh why? 8-)
Well Done, that man. I have immensely enjoyed this series. It was so good to see some of those great names, playing sublime football in the most difficult of conditions, mud, hail, rain, heavy balls etc... Sad to see some figures have passed on, Brian Clough, Malcolm Alison, Emlyn Hughes et al. I grew up in New Zealand, and we used to get The Big Match on Sundays, back in usually 2 weeks after the had seen it in the UK. Does anyone remember the Majestic theme music.
My Dad recorded this on VHS for me and I watched the tape to death growing up. Great to see it here - although I imagine I'm enjoying a different kind of nostalgia to you folks who were actually alive to see the 70s first-hand.
Thanks so much for these bro, have seen 'em all! Brilliant series, with just one flaw, that being that very little time is spent on the smaller clubs of the era-Burnley,Bristol C,Carlisle U,Luton T,Boro etc hardly getting a look in,tho they all spent time in Div 1 in the 70s.Like Waterman,i ain't no nostalgia junkie-but give me 70s football any day over the predictable crap we have now! Thanks again
I am guessing the reason they don't release it might be the modern licensing laws, which would force the BBC to pay an absolute fortune to retain all the contemporary music tracks which play almost constantly in the background on this series. It might simply be because they don't think it would sell however. Either way, I agree with you, I would love to see this given an official, unabridged, DVD release.
Thanks. I've got all of these still on tape (of variable quality - the joys of VHS!) and will upload the lot over the next week or so. I have lost the last 20 minutes of the final episode (a 'look back at the whole decade'), but most of that episode was just stuff they'd already shown in the earlier shows anyway!
Ray Clemence must have had the most powerful left foot in football. At 6.20 he almost reached United's penalty area. Even if he had a tailwind it is still one hell of a kick.
@Poopingbotham Not only was Madeley a top utility mad but he also didn't seem to mind sitting on the bench when everyone else was fit and in form. Useful player to have. A bit like David Webb at Chelsea, who also played in every position including a full game in goal once!
Unfortunately I only had the first 20 minutes of that on tape (the tape ran out when I recorded it). Most of it was just stuff which had been on the main episodes anyway
What's the sweet ride at 0:07, my 1999 New Beetle GLS I had owned since brand new in July 1999 most recently got totaled in a multi-car crash (last month) and I'm in the market for a new ride, I just wanted to know the make and model at 0:07, thanks.
Why don't you upload those Match of the Seventies and Eighties episodes again, but this time, make sure you don't put parts for each (e.g Part 1, Part 2).

Thankyou so bloody much! I thought I'd never see this again! Legend!
Damn,i remember watching this in summer 95.Much respect for posting this series,i thought i'd never see this again!
Thanks for putting up all of these. Great way to learn about the history of the game in England.

Indeed. The nostalgia programme has itself become a piece of nostalgia now.
Thanks for uploading greatly appreciated
Well worth the watch this👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Even if you did watch it on DVD, it wouldn't be the same. This stuff needs to be watched on VCR.
My pleasure. Hoping to (finally) get the remaining episodes up this coming weekend. My excuse for the delay is pure laziness!
Thanks for the upload ! great stuff !
god bless Dennis, proper bloke
Thanks for posting. What a lovely change from Sky 'premier league' ....
@geraberl Pleased you enjoyed it mate. I'm really thankful I taped them all when I did. I keep trying to interest the wife in them, without success.

Arsenal greatest club in England ALLWAYS At the top table. !! Quality class Tradition !!!
This is class my dad taped in on video tape ages ago can you buy it on dvd anywere?
It's strange but even when you were actually at the match in those days the play was really blurry.
i tot there was a review of the entire decade??? Pls upload asap...tks...
Unfortunately I only had the first 20 minutes of that on tape (the tape ran out when I recorded it). Most of it was just stuff which had been on the main episodes anyway
can anyone identify the song that plays in the background from the 1min 5sec mark till 1min 25sec in
Match of The 70s 1970-71 Part 1
Arjun Kapur Its the Theme from the film 'Shaft' by Isaac Hayes......
What game was that where Arsenal were giving the ref grief in the tunnel?
What's the sweet ride at 0:07, my 1999 New Beetle GLS I had owned since brand new in July 1999 most recently got totaled in a multi-car crash (last month) and I'm in the market for a new ride, I just wanted to know the make and model at 0:07, thanks.
Ford Capri ( UK spec)
Are you still active and around, Paul?
Alan Hudson: the phantom goal.
@ladiesinwaiting1 My pleasure. And I agree with you about the modern game.
why is this in parts? Can't it be condensed into one long video?
I originally posted it in parts because, believe ut or not, UA-cam had a 10 minute limit in those days. I am currently reposting them whole.
It seems that from watching this, Arsenal have always had problems with Stoke...
Why don't you upload those Match of the Seventies and Eighties episodes again, but this time, make sure you don't put parts for each (e.g Part 1, Part 2).
Arsenal vs the ref: imagine if you did that today?
On its way soon
Arsenal never changed at all LOL.
It's so strange to hear British people say "soccer".
And George Best did what?
North London 'neighbours'....? Go back to Woolich
